I have a 606NT I do food plots and small acreages with and I have never had a problem with it. It will plant anything you put in it. I bought it with about 1000 acres on the meter so I did a little fixing on it. New coulter blades and this year new opener disc or blades and she is good as new. Just keep it greased good. Never had a problem with the clutch mechanism and it only has one. They are good drills. Have a neighbor who bought a new 12 foot for 48,000 dollars. But he works a lot of land.

I think on my old Deere drill, the book tells us to not transport the machine with a full load on it because of packing the seed in the hopper. I never worried about that, if I go very far, I always use a wrench to turn the shaft before engaging it, to be sure it turns. My teen age son was helping one time and planted 10 acres before I checked on him and the drive pins were sheared. So I had to repair things and redo the entire field! He either dropped it into gear at too high a speed or tried to back up with it engaged? On your project there, it looks to me like the spring is too much when in the disengaged position. Very possibly why the thing wears so bad, especially if the user transports it very far with the wheel drive engaged. But, it's a rental, what do we really expect!

I bet that new hex shaft is the upgrade the factory made to solve the problem you are having, with the hex design it won't drive from the pin!

Good video Ross. Guess this why my Dod kept his old Oliver superior for as long as he did. Good luck with this one.

If you don't waste the Governments money, they will give it to foreign country's, so I suggest you use the money

I wonder why the government agency wouldn’t grease their machinery either before or after each use

Ross I worked at great plains Industries Wichita , KS. (Transfer pump mfg.) Great Plains drills are made at Salina , KS. When I worked at the pump company a woman in shipping told me this. Once in a while a truck shows up with incoming freight for great plains drills.

Sorry your having bad luck with the Great Plains, they are built not far from me. Our pheasants forever chapter owns one and rents it out. Its a small ten foot model to do waterways and such. It gets drug all over hell and no one pays particularly good care to it and it works good. I own a 30ft GP wheat drill and have had good luck with it also.

I feel your pain. I used to work on the Conservation Districts Great Plains drill. Multiple users meant multiple problems.

On fighting the spring, put spring in vise compress it take two zip ties or wire around it to hold it in a compressed state. Install and cut zip ties.

I have the same issues with parts. My son's MF 285 needed front wheel bearings and the original had the race with it while the new ones that I ordered did not. When I called the AGCO parts guy he told me that the new ones didn't have the race and he forgot to cross reference it. So I had to make a trip back to the dealer to get the new correct one, which he had one in stock but had to order the new one, with the race. I guess that's what happens when you have older equipment, that's fun sadness for us guys. Anyways, I enjoyed watching, thanks and I hope your dad goes well!

You're correct. Wedging is an issue. We learned the hard way too. So from now on we don't put seed in until we get to the field. We great our TYE drill every 40 acres but usually on small fields we grease at the start of a field and then again when we clean everything out and put it away. When the season is done.

The hexagonal hole in the new part is a puzzle. It looks like the two shims on the back side of the clutch took out all the lateral movement on the shaft. I think you are well on your way to repairing this part of it. I really don't understand what this assembly does with the chain drive. How does this work with respect to actually drilling seed into the ground?

Ross, if that was Abrams tank a farmer would find a way to destroy it. Why ? Because it is not theirs. That’s the way it is.

Could weld some light chain to the cylinder lock and to the end of the pin then it won’t get lost. Clip will probably still disappear haha
