A pin wheel will do the same job as a woodpecker, and they are easy to buy from most places or online, in any case great job. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Great job looks awesome !!! These kits were fun to build and fly, didn’t cost to much , really a shame what happened to the hobby, I go to the field and everyone has foam toys, don’t understand why guy’s hate glow engines and wood kit plane’s or they are flying giant crazy expensive planes that in my opinion are over the top, cant beat 40-120 size kits for fun

I have been building balsa planes since I was 8 years old. I am 48 years old today and still building balsa kits and flying. I just love the hobby and have seen the changes throughout the years.

I'm getting back into the hobby after 35 years. As a result, I have several vintage planes to cover, starting with a GP J3 Cub. It's good to see your technique, and like me, you are very meticulous with covering in order to walk on to the field with a plane you can be proud of. You do beautiful work. Way back, I used Balsarite to coat the balsa with to help the Monokote adhere better... at least that's how the product was promoted. I was wondering if there is a substitute for Balsarite, or is treating the wood even necessary? So many things I used to take for granted picking up at the hobby shop are no longer available- I mean besides the kits. Anyway, thank you so much for taking the time and effort to produce this video. I know that added many hours to your finish work on this plane. I hope she's still flyin'! Good luck & God bless. -Floyd->>>

Thanks for the comment. Yes the Ultra-Sport 1000 still flying today and still looks as it did on maiden day besides changing the engine to a DLE30. Well back in the day I used balsarite as well but once our local hobby shops closed down getting the product became harder. To be honest I have not used balsarite for well over 20 years now and still get good adhesion with monokote. However once again now monokote is no more so i am trying Ultracote. Well welcome back to the hobby my friend. I have not stopped yet and don't plan on it anytime soon. 42 years for me

Great video and techniques Bayona! There is a 4th method worth trying for applying Monokote over Monokote. You can fully pre-shrink the trim covering (sunburst in this case) with a heat gun before you iron it down which will keep the air from forming underneath it.
@BayonasRCWorld
@BayonasRCWorld Год назад
Oh yeah! I have done that before as well with good results. Trust me I have tried if not most of the techniques for Monokote over Monokote since the earlier days because back in the 80's I could never get the hang of it. But trial and error plus being persistent with no quit attitude and hours of practice for past 41 years now in the hobby I am finally decent at covering being humbled.

@BayonasRCWorld
@BayonasRCWorld Год назад
Yup exactly and we were proud because we did built and covered all on our own even though it looked somewhat okay hehehehehe. I was only 8 years old in 82 and was already stick and tissue building rubber powered free flight planes. Not until 1985 or 86 when I really started covering because I was into building gliders, slope soaring planes covered with transparent monokote. The good old days for sure.

@mrbob92679 6 месяцев назад
Excellent job! And very educational. I remember doing my first one years ago. I got a glider I would like to put this on. Question for you, did you use a template for the sun burst? Are they all the same size? Did you hand cut them or borrow your wife's Cricut? Thanks for sharing your wonderful work.

Great video, thanks for sharing those tips. What is the name of that tiny iron and where do you get it? what temperature does it run?
@BayonasRCWorld
@BayonasRCWorld 6 месяцев назад
It is a trim sealing iron. You can try Amazon or some online RC stores like Horizon Hobbies, Amainhobbies, Tower Hobbies etc. The temperature will vary depending on brand of irons. Mine is made by Coverite and temps are 40-152 degrees C or 105-305 degrees F
@BayonasRCWorld

You could even try Ebay
@stephenrobinson4018

What is the temperature of sealing iron
@BayonasRCWorld
@BayonasRCWorld Год назад
I don't have a set temp that I use. It all depends on what I am doing, the surface I am applying the covering onto i.e wing tip, stab corners, 90 deg bends or just general flat surfaces. The main key is to ensure that your temp is properly melting the adhesive of the covering. It is more about technique, pressure and heat duration with the iron. You can have the dial at max and never touch it throughout the covering process, unless you are doing monokote over monokote then I would reduce the temp or dial to just below half. Yeah I don't use a pocket thermometer, or any specific temp settings.

Can you explain how you prep the Monokote for the Cricut machine. What is the clear material that the Monokote is adhered to? Excellent job on the scheme. I normally cut my graphics by hand from Monokote but I do have a vinyl cutter. Thanks
@BayonasRCWorld
@BayonasRCWorld Год назад
I use transfer paper which is the clear material that the Monokote is stuck to. This helps keep all the letterings together while transferring from the cutting mat to the model. I leave the backing of the monokote to prevent any dirt or lint from adhering to the back side of the monokote during cutting.
@greggelko2422
@greggelko2422 Год назад
Mmm, im surprised the monokote dose not separate from its own backing during the Cricut process. So after you cut it on the Cricut you then apply another clear transfer over the actual monokote, peel the first clear material off the back along with the monokote and then transfer the pattern onto the airframe, correct?
@BayonasRCWorld
@BayonasRCWorld Год назад
@@greggelko2422 yes! Normally the monokote clear backing remains on the tacky cutting mat which I then remove after with tape.
