I was asked to prepare a presentation about Harris hawks for the 2021 Great Salt Lake Bird Festival. Due to health concerns related to the virus, the festival is being held online this year. As such I was asked to prepare a digital presentation instead of presenting live. This video discusses biology, behavior, taxonomy and use in falconry.

I'm so fascinated by you giving goshawks imped harris' hawk tailfeathers! When I worked with raptors in rehabilitation we always imped molted feathers from the same bird, or failing that, same species. I never considered giving birds different species' feathers, but now I'm totally idiotically entranced with the idea of imping different feathers to customize a bird's plumage for specific performance (though obviously you'd never do that ethically).

I got the idea when I saw an old photo from the 60’s or 70’s of someone who had imped a full tail of snowy owl feathers onto a goshawk that had broken its tail. Obviously not an ideal thing, but made me start thinking outside of the box.

I had a Harris Hawk that caught crayfish out of a stream twice. It actually caught them out of the deep fast moving part of the stream by flying low and just plucking them out of the water. They must have been swimming near the top. I thought that was the strangest thing, but after seeing this video and seeing their relatives maybe it wasn't so strange after all.

The more I hear about Harris hawks, the more "universal" they sound, not best at x, y, or a, but able to DO do, y AND a ;-)... I would guess that a Harris/goshawk cross would be hell on wings for hunting!?

Those are very, very cool birds! They must be quite cool as, not pets, but 'partners', and the y socialize to/with people pretty well? Nice talk! I guess that those flexible feathers would allow them to pursure prey right into a tree, or brush, without concern for feather breakage?

Mr.Ben I love your videos. They have been so helpful for me. I am a 13 year old boy that lives in San Antonio but I am moving out to Floresville and I am very interested in the art of falconry. Do you happen to know any falconers in San Antonio or near that area who would be willing to help me on my journey through falconry?

If we did not have Harris hawks half of falconers would probably not practice falconry. Since the introduction of GPS telemetry I do see the RT putting up faster mph. It makes sense the have stiffer feathers and heavier wing loading.

Your videos are seriously inspiring I've been obsessed with falconrey since I was a kid because I have Mongolian ancestors but I live and farm in North scotland. The hybrid Harris/eagle is something I never knew was possible would it be safe to assume that to be easier to train than a pure eagle but capable of taking larger prey than a pure Harris? Thankyou. Going to look up your books just now

I don’t have as much experience with hawk hybrids, but yes I would think (just like a peregrine being put into a hybrid) that putting Harris into almost any hawk hybrid would likely be an improvement.

In medieval europe was falconry high class thing and falcon were considered as higher class birds. Even more valuable than eagles. In theese times was one white Gyr same value as whole farm. That could be reason why aplomados were brought but harris not. Also i dont know why but harris hawk allways resembled Caracara Planctus(dunno english name) in me. Altrough its classified as falconidaes, im only? Have a great day!😉🇨🇿👍

my harris loves her tenisball brush head keeps bordom away thru moult playes them all time .and if not watching her wen out she reguly try fly fox an deer i terrified she make contact one day lol
