Well, I do play around on a piano accordion, but gave up trying to read music long ago. Notes and chords are "codified" along with time signature and tempo. More importantly, keys have been described as to their emotional connections. Most tunes follow a pattern of tension and resolution, but some keep the listener on tenterhooks, skillfully holding on to the tension. I think it matters more to try to get your head around the feel of chords and notes and how the combinations nuance the feel, than grappling with the notation.
@marysalvi242
@marysalvi242 2 года назад
@@Belfreyite I love the tech explanations (another channel I love does this) and I am musical, a singer(not in a very long time) and just learned the songs by listening over and over, so now when, and I agree, "most importantly" how keys and chords etc vibrate to our brains and we feel something. Now imo, this was an epic fail...the song just fell flat and was dragging, so, I didn't get any emotional reaction to the music. Maybe I'll go and listen to some old coldplay music. This song, well, to each their own likes and dislikes. Happy Rick enjoys, no loves the song! ; )

One reason is the A natural in the F major chord resolves the B flat which is the 9th of the A flat. Great music has a series of tension and releases that most don’t understand but instead feel. A great artist brings the listeners on a journey of these type of pretty resolutions. Understanding the music theory behind these chord progressions gives the listeners a deeper level of appreciation of this beauty.

"Rush of Blood" was the only CD in my car for the 24 months after my husband died. I listened every day to and from work. Every nerve of every sensory organ in my body every cell in my brain got imbedded in with those songs -- every chord, every melody, every riff, every beat. When I first listened to this song, I was at the end of my rope. At 19, I left an abusive home, broke, still in school, and would spend most of my days alone in a crappy apartment. "If I'd only waited, I'd not be stuck here in this hole." This was always funny to me. If only I'd braved through the dysfunctional situation, I wouldn't have suffered too much alone. But I couldn't take it, so I left. Whenever holidays came in, my university friends would go back to their homes outside of town and because I didn't have a home to go back to, I would feel even more isolated. I'd wander around the sleepy town on my own while listening to this song. It's an absolute gem. Thank you Rick Beato for giving this song the credit it deserves.

You are definitely right about angry fans that hate success of any kind. However, Coldplay always got hated for being derivative of Radiohead (specifically the piano/guitar ballads, see "Karma Police" or earlier "High and Dry"). Later, I think that criticism shifted towards Coldplay's lack of ambition musically, or their insistence on sentimentality and a kind of "smarminess." Perhaps starting your career with the heart-open-wide romanticism of "Yellow" and never really changing tack left them an easy target for critics that just heard a Dad-rock diet Radiohead without any of their British compatriots' social critique, darkness, or experimentation. I don't necessarily agree with all that criticism but that seemed a rather common position to take.

How about doing a video on “Nights on Broadway” by the Bee Gees? A truly great song that helped to turn the band’s fortunes around in the mid-70’s - it also was the song in which Barry Gibb discovered his falsetto. And a band that people love to hate, as misplaced as that hate is. Better yet, how about doing a Barry Gibb interview? The man is a songwriting dynamo and had a hell of a vocal range. Also a really good guy…get him!

Rick definitely should do this. The Bee Gees were and are loved everywhere in the world. I don’t know what’s the matter with the US. There have been papers written on homophobia and racism being the root of disco bashing. The Bee Gees wrote in every genre. And they wrote in every decade from the 60s to the 2000s. I don’t know why many think of them as only disco. I think the bashing against Bee Gees was jealousy. The media did overplay them in the late 70s, but the Bee Gees stepped back for almost a decade and wrote huge hits for other megastars. Who else does that?

@@Catsincages On the contrary, Coldplay would seem to be an example of a band that is very authentic in their approach to music. Irrespective, and to clarify: I'm not saying bands shouldn't try to be 'successful'. If they wish to, they should try to have their music heard by as many people as possible but, what I'm saying, is that using record sales as a metric of success will always be a losing game. You'll never please everyone and, imho, it's better to create the music that speaks of who you are, than try to fit someone else's idea of what your music should sound like. It's perfectly possible to have a long and happy career without churning out disposable pop songs. That said, some people love disposable pop songs and if they wish to create or listen to them, then go for it. The world has enough music for everyone. The song is featured in a touching Netflix documentary called Young@Heart which is about a group of senior citizens in a nursing home that work with a music director to put together a concert that they will perform in. There are two folks that are supposed to do a duet with "Fix You", one of them passes away shortly before the concert, and the man who's left decides to still perform the song by himself. You need a publicist, Mr. Beato... What REALLY happened is that during an inspiring live performance, you threw your guitar up in the air, but you were distracted by the roaring crowd and the blinding spotlights a la Kris Novoselic... My wife and I were just talking about Coldplay last night and how so many people hate them. Their music isn’t the kind I usually listen to but there is no denying that they’re extremely successful for a reason. They make good music that appeals to a HUGE audience.

I've been to a lot of concerts, from the hardest of metal to folk and bluegrass, all across the spectrum, and I can say without a doubt their live show was one of the best I've ever been to, top 3 for sure. Ive never understood whats the problem with electronic elements it doesnt make the band less of a band, it doesnt make the music less good, au contraire, you have more textures, intersting tones/ sound design and bigger arrangements, its a perfect addition and its really up to date in terms of musical ability. "Clocks" is easily one of the greatest songs of this century.and beyond. And before you rip me about it, watch Rick's analysis (which shouldn't be needed to know how good this song is ) to find out why. I saw them live after this album came out - they were great. One of the things I remember is a huge part of the crowd getting excited and singing along when they played "In my Place". I might have been projecting but it looked like the band were thinking "well we'd better play this garbage to impress the punters", even though they had plenty of great songs like this one. But now all their songs are for the people who liked "In my Place", and none of them for those of us who liked "Amsterdam".

I played less and less. I started playing (hacking) through piano/vocal songbooks out of boredom and frustration. One day I played through A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD. I Repeated it during the 6 hours a day I had to be there. Later a cafe worker came down to compliment me at the piano. Quote "everyone upstairs is saying the piano player is killin' it today!".......😂😂😂

I knew by the third chord it was Chris Martin. He has such a definitive style. And who would hate this band? His playing and writing are genius. As someone who has spent a lot of time on a piano, and being self-taught, he was and still is one of my favorites for chord study, harmony, melody, and just trying to understand his voicings and how they are used to lift his songs. Beautiful stuff always from this band. Fix you is another beautiful song and was played at my daughters funeral. ❤
