With the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise approaching, I have decided to compile all my Great Sword knowledge into 2 videos, the first of which you can see here. In this guide, we'll look at the MH Rise Great Sword's moveset and the very foundations of GS gameplay. Hope you'll find this tutorial useful. Advanced guide coming next year.

Finally a guide that is actually aimed at beginners. I watched like 5 different ones and they go over all the moves for 30 minutes and don't give concise answers what is actually seeing active use and what not. One thing I would have added, is where to get to the training area but great video overall!
@XanMH1
@XanMH1 2 года назад
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the guide. I wanted to teach people actual relevant information so that's good to hear. My video focuses only on GS itself so I didn't include basic game functions, but you can go to the training area by selecting "Move around village" from the menu or radial menu, or travel there via boat from buddy plaza.
@Aquilalias
@Aquilalias 2 года назад
@@XanMH1 But you can only go there by the map/menu once you have been there before and the game doesn't indicate where that training area could be. Got me confused for a while and had to google it.

This. I got way way better with my SnS and creeping into TA territory clear times (not breaking records as I'm not keeping 100% uptime on item buffs, scripting, and rolling for low HP/favorable AI) just because I played GS so much.

I like that you can make up for a lot of time wasted running with a good TCS. My SnS does baby damage, so when i'm not attacking, which is often, because some monsters just like to frolick and shit, i lose a lot of damage potential. A good TCS on a weak spot are a good few seconds or minutes of an SnS tryharding the monster

I use the guard a lot, idk what you mean. Yes, there are counters with wire bugs, but if you're out of them, blocking is your only real defense if you want to keep being aggressive. Blocking has saved me so much all the way through master rank, and the sharpness loss is miniscule (or positive with a certain decoration)
@XanMH1
@XanMH1 7 месяцев назад
Blocking is not your only defense without wirebugs. Rolling/sprinting out of the way is a much stronger defensive option. It allows you to stay aggressive much better than guarding because you're not stunned by attacks' knockback with your weapon drawn, letting you position yourself and punish the monster where it hurts. Also the sharpness loss on guarding is very significant. Great swords have around 40 purple at endgame and you can lose all that after blocking a few high knockback attacks. Sure, you can kill monsters with yellow sharpness, or with a full tank guard + guard up builds, or by using only circle attacks, but my videos' goal is to teach you the proper, optimal way to play GS.

@XanMH1
@XanMH1 2 года назад
Not that hard. I recommend practicing against a more difficult monster that you enjoy fighting first. Just start out with trying to do regular charge slashes after his attacks then implement tackles and TCS. You can also start with Rage Slash first as that's a lot easier to use.

Gotta say, so far I haven't really warmed up to GS in this game, which is odd because I've played GS a fair bit in Tri, 4U and World and always enjoyed it, but in Rise... I really cannot put the finger on it but something about it feels clunky.

Finally learning GS! QQ questions: 1. When I try the Power Sheathe, like at 10:45 , it doesn't always me invul, I get stomped by the training dummy. The only way it seems to work consistently is like if the sword is on the ground from a charged attack. Is the window super narrow? Can it be extended with evade window? 2. 8:46, I do not have the "overhead slash" appear when I press X from neutral position. I get just a "Charge". Is this changed in subreak, was it bad?
@XanMH1
@XanMH1 Год назад
Power sheathe has 0,33 seconds of s which start right as you press the button. You get s while your hunter is throwing the bug. I don't think evade window works with it. To get the quick overhead slash, you have to hold the left stick in a direction while pressing the attack button.

They have setting guides which will highlight/outline your player model specifically when your camera sight is blocked by the monster you're currently engaging, but it's a menu setting, open up options and select "Game settings" should be near the mid to bottom called "Player Silhouette", the different "Types" are just what color you will be highlighted as through the monsters body. 👍

The developers kept them around from older games I guess. Every weapon has useless moves, because the developers aren't very good at balancing the whole moveset of weapons.

My hardest time with gs is aiming the true slash when charging. Like I don't know wheter it is going to hit at the direction I want no indication.
@XanMH1
@XanMH1 Год назад
You can turn 45 degrees both ways from where you start charging. A good indication of where you'll hit is your hunter's left shoulder. Try to get into the habit of pushing the left stick in the direction you want to hit while charging and keeping it there until you release the attack button.

I wish Capcom would rid themselves of the "vestigial" attacks of Greatsword, mainly Wide Slash and the Rising Slash. As mentioned; they're useless. So why are they even still in the game? Why does Capcom insist that these useless relics of MH1 still remain in the game when they have no purpose? It's frustrating. Why not get rid of guarding as well? It'd be interesting to see guard replaced with a sprinting ability that uses A LOT of stamina. To me, either give GS a little bit of DPS with a moveset similar to both Switch Axe's Sword mode or Charge Blade's Axe mode. This would cater to people like me that like Greatsword but is generally uninterested in its charged attacks. Or double down on its charged attacks and use different attacks that align more with what Greatsword is trying to be. Tackle or Slap or the lunging wide swing should all be attacks that you can immediately do.

Calling the Greatsword amazing after stating half its moves are useless is quite the claim. So I've played the hell out of freedom unite and MH4 ultimate and main GS in both of them. Came back for Rise and I must say this weapon feels terrible to use next to hammer. I know its mostly b/c the tackle is new to me but the core GS gameplay feels left in the dust in this faster paced monster hunter.
