3rd time to Taunton station in Somerset on the Bristol to Exeter Line and as well as being the junction for the Berks & Hants Line via Westbury although my previous visit was way back in February 2020.
Featuring services from Great Western Railway and CrossCountry Trains.
Taunton opened as a terminus in July 1842 when the Line from Bristol was extended from Bridgwater. The present layout dates from when the station was rebuilt as a four track station in 1932.
Todays layout with the outer platforms used by through trains whilst the centre platforms mostly used for terminating services and sometimes passing services.
Close by is the West Somerset Railway which there are plans to allow services from Taunton by Diesel DMU long the route from Taunton to Bishops Lydeard although apart from Special Events or Steam Excursions there are presently no plans for now
The Class 43 HSTS both CrossCounty Long Distance and GWRs Castle Sets are still motoring on however at the time of filming their days in the Southwest and in service are on borrowed and are in their last months of operation
The XC HSTs due to be withdrawn in Mid October with the GWR Castle sets being gradually withdrawn from May workings will be cut back to 7, September will be cut down to just 3 sets and with final withdrawal expected in Mid December.
On CrossCountry the main intercity services are nowadays provided by Class 220 and 221 Voyagers which after October 2023 will be the main fleet with the only exception being Cardiff to Nottingham via Derby and Birmingham New Street to Cambridge via Leicester services being provided by Class 170 Turbostars
On Great Western Railway the main intercity fleet is nowadays provide by Class 800 and 802 IETs although once the Castle HSTs are withdrawn the main Cardiff to Penzance will be alternated by 5 car IETs and Class 158s.
