I remember that event. My grandfather had just passed and left me $100. I drove from Randolph down to Woods Hole with my cousin and my toddler daughter. We showed up at a restaurant and used that $100 to hire a local to take us out to see that shark. It was huge!!!! Thanks, Grampie Sullivan!
That shark could probably smell those rescue seals at WHOI aquarium from Naushon. He had to be hungry. You almost never see those sharks come any closer inland than Chatham because the seal population is way denser down Cape. Not so much in Vineyard Sound.
Yes were lucky to have him working out of Woods Hole for our Summer White Pointers we get each year. I live on the Cape year round. So he's our guy when we need answers about our toothy friends. And boy are they BIG and toothy...:)
@@TheMalibuArtistthere’s an Australian guy who worked for the fisheries department and part of his job was to maintain the horrible shark nets that we have here. But he also knows a lot about great whites. He claims that females after giving birth stay with the pup for 2 months teaching it the basics of hunting. I’m sure he’d be happy to come on your podcast. He has very interesting stories of his times spent with GWS and respects them greatly and believes they’re intelligent. He commented on a channel I’ll try to find his comment again and put him onto your channel. The very least that can happen is you gain one more subscriber.🤷🏻♀️
I love the interview format; please continue these. It it is possible to interview Rodney Fox, please do. His journey from white shark attack victim to white shark advocate is fascinating.
I've been watching the channel for a year or two now and it's not only great to see it grow in popularity but the content too. I knew it would. Capturing new behaviours, being featured on news channels across the world and now you've now got famous shark scientists on as guests. Lol Seriously, keep up the good work and I hope the channel and its influence continue to grow.
Thank you for posting this...!!! This is practically in my backyard since i live on Cape Cod year round. And i remember when this happened like it was yesterday. Made a lot of news for our area. And with Dr. Skomal being our resident shark expert he has also done some awesome work tagging our summer white pointers that we get. Plus, his additional work with OCEARCH which put together a wonderful shark tracking program. So we can all follow our beloved toothy friends wherever they may be.
Thank you for this awesome video with Dr. Greg Skimal! Even after decade upon decade of studying sharks his enthusiasm is so contagious. I never miss an opportunity to see or listen to him talk about his experiences. He is without doubt a wealth of knowledge.
This was a fascinating talk - thank you for having Dr. Skomal for this interview. I was kind of sad when it came to an end, and could have listened to more...for hours. Ordered his book from Amazon while watching and can hardly wait to read it. You give us the most awesome content, Carlos. Thank you.
Your best work yet, i am totally enthralled with the connections you have made with the scientists around the world. You have made sharks both real and fascinating.
Awesome discussion between you two! I'm a Massachusetts native, got my White Shark Conservancy license plate and everything; and Dr. Skomal is absolute favorite scientist for this species! It was a big day in New England when JAWS came home, finally!
Wow, two of my favorite shark guys in one place! 🦈 What a great interview! Definitely need to order this book. Carlos, I’m a lot like you…a photographer, but also a huge animal advocate and lover. I’m also a nurse, (so a woman of science) but have educated myself on the science of various animals that I love as well, which includes sharks. I thoroughly enjoy all of your videos and your perspectives on what you’re seeing. I love Greg Skomal’s passion for sharks that’s absolutely contagious! I hope you’ll have him back or do more colabs!
I did not expect to watch the entire podcast. Man, I’m so thankful for what you have done with your opportunity. Your desire to work hard learning and teaching about sharks is so entertaining and inspiring. Well done once again ! Beautiful pictures of sharks awesome stories from a couple of shark enthusiasts ! Loved it.
What A great program. Thank you so much for creating it. Dr. Greg Skomal is a living hero and legend. I just bought the book. If Dr. Skomal ever does an Event in Los Angeles, I will be the first to line up to buy tickets. Thank you Carlos!!!!
Great interview! I love Greg and have watched him for years! I love how he has un-demonized these beautiful creatures as well. Love your interview style! Thank you for all you continue to do!
@missmermaid6249 I saw JAWS the year after I graduated high school. Already had shark fever. Nearly lost it when Bruce came over the Orca's stern. I was in the balcony and the railing lined up with the transom. I thought for a split second I was going to have the shark in my lap!!! Oh, my G-d!!
I love your videos! I really appreciated this video where you are engaging a scientist and he acknowledges you. An accolade can't get any better than that.🎉
Jaws awakened a true love of sharks that has stayed with me my entire life ❤❤❤Peter Benchley thanks for that and for everyone who loves and cares for these incredibly beautiful and important apex predators who help keep our oceans healthy and thriving 👏👏♥️♥️👏👏
I love the work that both of you do. It’s so inspiring. The hard work and knowledge you set forth in your research is incredible. This video is great. Thank you for sharing it and I look forward to reading Chasing Shadows. Keep up the great work guys! 😊👍 🦈
Keep it up man. Dig your stuff. Loved sharks as a kid and am finally becoming enamored again as a 35 year old. Different perspective since I have a son and I find myself more cautious and worried but even more fascinated
Dr. Skomal is one of my favorite scientists who are on Shark Week. Some of my favorite videos are of him and different encounters he has had. Photographer Andy Casagrande, it would be awesome to see you interview him as well. Mauricio Hoyos, the one who is in the first video of Deep Blue and so many other good videos, would be a good one. Also Dickie Chivell, he has done some of the craziest things when it comes to White Sharks. Shark Attack survivor Paul Di Grassi too. I could go on and on, it's something I have always been so interested in and I LOVE your drone footage and look forward to seeing them each time you upload.
Now that was a great discussion. Full of information and good humour in the massive topic of trying to understand these enigmatic fish. I so often forget that they are member of the fish family. I think it's partly down to their size but also their clear intelligence and curiosity. Thanks so much.
Love the name of the book "Chasing Shadows". In cart now is the hardback at $23.99 via the link. Thank you both for sharing your experiences with the rest of us!
Oh wow Carlos! That was awesome! I loved Dr Greg. I know that famous footage he’s talking about too, where the shark breaches underneath him jaws wide open! Yikes 😱. It seems he’s done some incredible things with Shark science and behaviours. I also noticed he has a great respect for you and your contributions to understanding Sharks 🦈 As you said, it starts by observation and you’ve already found things they’ve never seen before, including the white shark which is most likely a new born. I believe it’s a new born shark. I know you will be the one to capture a live birth! Thank you so much for another great video. 🦈❤️ Edit: I removed the post and was going to repost it with a Thanks for you but you don’t have that option available here. 😔
I have a question for your next interview with Dr Skomal regarding Orca predation on Great White sharks. Last year I travelled to Gansbaai South Africa intent on doing a cage dive with white sharks. Unfortunately for me, I did not get to see any white sharks because Orcas had moved into the bay and were killing the sharks for their livers. I believe that this hunting characteristic of Orcas was first reported in South Africa. Has Dr Skomal seen this behavior in California where there is a large population of resident and transient Orcas? Thank you for your amazing photography and for this great interview. It was enlightening for a shark nerd like me.
Man, do I know that feeling of wishing I had my camera... We had a white in knee to waste deep water two years ago (Memorial Day weekend) in Brigantine NJ. The shark seemed injured, unfortunately, but to this day it was my one and only in-person sighting of a white.
The white shark guy is a guy called Bruce Bell from Tasmania Australia ....he's like the head of the white shark university courses and stuff down under
Two Aussies worth talking to would be Rodney Fox and his son Andrew in South Australia. Rodney was bitten by a shark in the 70s I think and has become a keen shark conservationist as a result, and Andrew runs their tourism buisness in Port Lincoln. They respect and affection they have for these animals was inspiring to be around.
The Greenland Sharks look so dopey looking. Almost as if they have a goofy smile on their faces. Yet to think they can get as large or larger than a White Shark.
Is it possible there were Orcas in the area? I remember this , and the shark flat out refused to leave the area for a pretty good amount of time. They had to FORCE it to leave. You know how they all just take off if orcas are in the area , maybe he was slow or something and this was the best he could do to get away at the time. I have no idea if orcas are even in the area, but just crazy how it refused to leave like nope my home is here now lol.
Does Rodney Fox still do interviews? Valerie Taylor? They are the foundation of WS investigation and research. Everyone should see Blue Water, White Death at least once. It predates Jaws.
I Honestly do not think that SHARKS are simply other 'fish', not a chance. Fish do not HAVE these massive teeth and CERTAINLY DO NOT.... EAT HUMANS. Sharks however DO EAT PEOPLE and there is no way that these BIG creatures ARE SIMPLY fish, away for a month !!!
If you could talk with Ocean Ramsey would be amazing. Just like you she is doing a fantastic work educating people about sharks and marine life. @OCEANRAMSEYSHARKS
What has Ocean Ramsey done for shark science? In my opinion, not much, if anything. She is a pretty face that gets photographed swimming with sharks to get the clicks.
This was a wonderful session. Hearing you two talk gives me goosebumps. The admiration for each other really shows how much you both care about sharks, and more directly great white research.
So wonderful to hear from Dr Skomal. He is my favorite shark scientist! Thanks for all you both do for sharks and our oceans in general. Great work, as always, Carlos.
An awesome interview Carlos. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈 You should do one of these with shark scientist Kris J. Parton from SHARK BYTES. Or, maybe even Sharktoz. BTW Carlos, a Greenland shark was recently discovered that was 512 years old and likely born in 1620. I saw the clip of him being out on the pulpit and a white shark jumping out of the water.
Hi Carlos, greetings from the UK. As a time long subscriber, diver & drone flyer, this interview with Dr. Greg Skomal is one of your best. In April 2024 I celebrated not only my 80th birthday but also 50 years since my first scuba dive, since when I've been fortunate to dive in close proximity to predatory members of the shark family, including great white, tiger, bull & oceanic whitetip, with only the GW necessitating a cage at Guadelupe island. The closest encounter? Being butted in the chest by a 14 footer while snorkelling in the Tubbataha reefs of the Philippines.(Fortunately that was only an inquisitive juvenile whale shark, captured on my GoPro, otherwise the outcome might've been different!) Will close now to make a donation. Keep up the good work!
Keep it up man. Dig your stuff. Loved sharks as a kid and am finally becoming enamored again as a 35 year old. Different perspective since I have a son and I find myself more cautious and worried but even more fascinated
I remember Valerie Taylor was big on making the public aware of sharks back in the 70s...lungs of the ocean, I remember her saying that...Valerie Taylor was a photographer, so was my mother..I wouldn't mind seeing a video of a day in the life of a great white shark...I've been in the water plenty of times with sharks, briefly though... I've never wondered what there days been like...what's life like for a monster that everyone hates...I've never been bitten by a monster but I've seen and swam with some crazy beautiful creatures...1976 Mudjimba Queensland....Valerie Taylor...
Both of you should check out Ocean Ramsey in Hawaii. She's studying Tiger Sharks and whites too .... She says they like to play with a leaf or something floating in the water. RU-vid ONE OCEAN RAMSEY. Awesome learning from you.
This is great - I've done work at Woods Hole and on the Cape, so I get it... Hey, as a surfer from Hawaii, one element of our lore, re sharks being color blind, is that having a board or rash guard, wetsuit, etc mimics a Sea Snake (a noble beast) and protects you from sharks... yellow & black bands...
Riveting interview! I'm terrified of sharks but sometimes I can't get enough video content about them. I've watched the "salt pond" video many times but had no idea of all the backstory, that was great. The various photos and videos added into this were a nice touch. I'll have to check out more from Greg. Thanks for all you do, Carlos.
Seriously? They used a fishing net and swept the entire width of the pomd from the far end towards the exit forcing the shark out of the pond back into the ocean. Its been covered on shark week and too many youtube videos to list, for them to say they wont tell you how the got her out of the pond and you'll have to buy the book to find out is just asinine. Anybody who didn't already know this, you're welcome, and to the creators of this video- suck it. 🖕👎
Nice interview. I learn something from every video. Those fish at 27:40, what do they do for the shark? Anyone know? And do they only hang around sharks?
