It's easy to see the difference when these birds are together. #birds #birdloversworldwide #birdingflorida #birdpoker

This is very helpful, Mark. Wish they would always show up together as the difference is obvious then.

Lesser yellowlegs show up once in awhile in Southern California. Supposedly they are closely related to willets. I don't believe that I've ever seen a greater yellowlegs here in Laguna Beach.

Hard to tell apart unless they are together. Best way is if the bill is longer than the head it should be a greater.

I'm a novice at general water bird identification, although I'm not bad at identifying the shorebirds seen in Laguna Beach. There are quite a few, including oystercatchers, which are not common at all except in marine environments. Many of the other shorebirds I regularly see can also be seen in fresh water environments, particularly those with bills long enough to penetrate a ways into mud.

Very nice Mark, I've seen several Lessers on this side of the Atlantic but never a Greater. Two Lessers once spent a whole winter and spring near where I live, hopes they may have bred but not actually interested in each other. Maybe same sex or siblings. What kit were you using?
