The sanderlings are wonderful .What a Busy ,bossy little bird. I loved these birds . I like their little motor like legs. Zip zipping in every direction. The beach footage was lovely too. 🥰🥰👍👍
"Motor like legs" and "zip zipping in every direction" are good descriptions of him, Pamela. He inspired both of us to describe the way he runs. As for the beach footage, the surf is so impressive that it takes no talent at all to film it so that viewers start thinking about an ocean vacation. It's a pleasure to see how much the movie made you enjoy these Sanderlings. I appreciate your comment.
I live in Oregon. I saw a group of these little fellas down on the beach and was just mesmerized by the way they move together. Didn't know what they were called. Thanks kindly for the info! 👍👍👍
I live in Missouri, Ric, so I don't get to see them often, but right now I'm visiting the Alabama coast and planning to film them in flocks. Your comment inspired me to make sure I get that footage.
Now you have to visit the shore again, I guess, Berta, so you'll know what the Sandpipers are up to. And I didn't know either until I read up on these birds. Thanks for the compliments. I do appreciate them.
I went down to the beach today and watched a group of these for about an hour. It was hard to see what they were eating on the rocks, it looked like some kind of dark seaweed slime but perhaps something was living inside that. Beautiful video as always, thanks for sharing with us.
Hey, Rob, nice to hear from you. I enjoyed reading your description of watching the Sanderlings feed.(But, being a St. Louisan, I don't know enough about these birds to comment on what they were getting out of the slime.) What I can say is that watching them for an hour is a great way to meditate.
Charlie Chaplin on fast forward....I can't get that image out of my mind. These little critters would sure give the Energizer Bunny a run for his batteries!
I made a note of "give the Energizer Bunny a run for his batteries!" Don't be surprised if it turns up in a script one of these days. As for the Charlie Chaplin fast forward line I've used that one several times. It even works for Robins running from one spot to another. In fact, what ground feeding bird does it NOT work for?
I'm not sure what you mean about the roadrunners, Cynthia. Are you talking about the way the sanderlings run? I guess they are alike in that, huh? By the way, we just got back from Arizona, and we saw two different roadrunners. Holy cow, what a trip they are! Wish I could have caught them on camera. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the movie.
@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME Ohh. . . so sanderlings AREN'T the same as roadrunners?! (blush!) Ok then, which one of them can run the fastest? (Or, have they ever even raced?! (giggle!))
I love it when someone makes the kind of silly mistakes I do. Thanks, Cynthia. (I only sound like I know what I'm talking about because my husband is a serious birder; he and the internet mostly prevent me from saying things I'll blush for. ) Anyway, no they haven't raced because the Sanderling is an ocean shorebird and roadrunners are desert birds. I looked around on RU-vid for a video that would show you the roadrunner. This one doesn't show his speed all that much, but it does give you an idea of how he looks and how he hunts. I found it interesting: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m53-f0ifaus.html
Brown thrashers also move a lot like road runners. You might like to check out my movie about the thrashers. And Horned Larks, there’s another one you might check out. So many birds, even Robins, whir their little legs like bicycle spokes. I love watching it.
I know I've succeeded if you can almost smell the salt air. And this time of year, you could watch them run around in bunches. Thanks, Chuck, for the "great video as always".
Beautiful opening shots with stunning light from that exquisite sunrise Jo! Watching Sanderlings at the beach is always fascinating and entertaining but what an amazing capture of fighting "Arnold and Joe" you have! Your narration plays its wonderful wit as usual, LOL, hormones... Warm regards, Cathy
I was down at the beach at sunrise every day, Cathy, and though I ought to share that joy. I was riveted by Arnold and Joe (and I'm glad you enjoyed the wit about them). Too bad the camera blurred out on me several times during that sequence. The Nikon gets confused by water and can't decide whether to focus where I told it to or switch to the waves. Sigh. But despite that, I had to use the film because it was so much fun!
I agree Jo. Small camera annoyances are not an issue when the subjects are fascinating! Besides the issue I find with uploading water images and RU-vids deficiency in matching the original resolution.
Oh, I hear you, Cathy, about RU-vid matching the original resolution. And I was hoping that people would be so fascinated with the sanderling fight that they wouldn't pay much attention to the blurry parts. But those parts make me grind my teeth.
Sweet! I've been there. What a gorgeous place! I just snagged a sandpiper carving on ebay by Artist Jonathan Jones. It's my new fav. Awesome movie Jo! Thumbs Way Up!
The Los Angeles Times had picture of human wiping off oil from a young Sandwrling here in Newport Beach. We have a huge oil spill in Southern California. The sanderling was so darn cute I looked sanderlings on internet and RU-vid.
Thank you very much for this superb video which captures different behaviours. I love the narrative. So well observed. You have a lovely voice- would live to hear you narrate books.
I enjoyed your comment so much that I watched the movie again myself. Thank you for the fulsome praise! And by the way, Clucky Girl, does your screen name indicate that you're a plucky young lady who raises chickens?
@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME I used to Jo. Now I live by the sea. No more chickens. Garden too small. Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate is bird paradise. So that gives me plenty to observe.
@@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME Hi Jo, ahh, I live in the most easterly coast in the county of Kent, England. It’s an area called Thanet. Biggest chalk cliffs in Europe.
I'm glad you liked it. Every time I make a new movie, I get completely immersed in the footage and this Sanderling film was no exception. I loved showing him to people.
