Golf has time and again proven itself to one of the most mentally challenging sports. It not only affects the everyday player, but also affects some of the greatest players to ever the game. In an instant, a player can fall apart. These are some of those players and their stories, I hope you enjoy.

This hurts and I've been there. I had a solid 2-stroke lead going into the final hole and was playing well. My first shot hit the windmill blade squarely and bounced back. Second shot made it through, but clipped the dinosaur foot. My third circled the cup, as did the fourth and the fifth was short. My red ball finally dropped in six. My wife wound up winning the round and I haven't played Adventure Golf since. I'll likely carry the scars for a long time.

The Mcilroy shot on the 10th at Augusta always brings a smile to my face. Just after he hit the stroke, one of the announcers asked, "Is that out of bounds?", and his partner answered, "I don't know, I've only come to this tournament for 23 years and I've never seen anyone hit a shot over there." Cracks me up every time.

@@KasperViggoJensen Yep, same thing happened in the 2018 Masters, when his 2 foot putt for eagle on the 2nd wasn't even close. He was obviously dejected and from then on in placed no pressure on Reed.

For the lads who already have multiple majors, my heart does not feel as heavy, but for the lads who had this one shot at eternal glory, I truly feel for them. Golf is as unforgiving of a game as there is, and if one can deduct lessons from this game as opposed to regret and anger, it can be positive fuel for generations to come. The thing about golf is that it doesn’t come down to a “bad call” or another player blocking your shot, it is simply just what lives between our ears. Our minds. For many of these shots, these magnificent players could do with their eyes closed, but when the mind decides to tell you that everything is on the line, we simply choose to make things much more difficult. I wish you all the best, and the next time you hit a bad shot, find what lesson you can take from it, as opposed to giving more of yourself in the form of anger and regret. There is always glory to be had, even in the darkest of times.

Jean van de Velde is by far the most dramatic. He had it sealed, just had to make a double. The way he goofed, the put he made to still go extra holes, the mental collapse in that playoff when he realized what had happened. And the complete ending of his promising career after that.

Van de Velde was up by 5 at the start of the day too. Also, two wild stories: his playing partner, Craig Parry, holed from the same bunker Van de Velde was in. He told Jean, "I'll show you how to make it". Then, a few months later, Van de Velde came back and played the entire hole with just his putter...he made a 6, which would have been good enough to win the open

tbh I don't consider it a huge choke. Hitting driver wasn't dumb cuz he explained it was his best club all week and what happens if you hit an iron in the rough? On his second shot he got REALLY unlucky that it hit the one part of the stand to send it back. If it's one inch in any othe rdirection, he gets an easy drop and an up and down for bogey

2 majors and only 9 months later. He did OK yes. But I remember watching this live, Ernie made nothing all day until 18, and Adam’s 4 straight bogeys with no water hazards.....what are the odds? One major at this stage of his career, nearing 40, is definitely underachieving IMO. Beautiful swing, can’t putt

He’s still scared. The only reason he hasn’t won many more is his putting and that’s why he lost there. He finally broke they but the difference in a career with two different majors rather than one is huge. One can be attributed to a hot streak. Two different majors is a whole different game.

It's a shame that the 1996 Masters will always be remembered for Greg's collapse, when Faldo's 67 is one of the all time greatest rounds in golf history. When you consider the circumstances, the pressure etc, he played a flawless round. That 2 iron on 13 will be forever etched in my mind

Van de Velde was the worst in my opinion. All he had to do was put his ego in check and lay up on the 18th, and glory was his. He basically ruined his career in one hole. He never came back from that.

I'll never forget how van de velde blew off his loss as no big deal in the post match interview, then hearing Jack Nicklaus reaction to it. He was pissed at him for saying losing a major is no big deal. Never seen Jack that mad

Watching this makes me remember Woods taking 1 iron off the tee on 18 at Pebble in that Open where he double lapped the field. Even at the end, he played the percentage. The very best never let down their guard or discipline.

i saw Norman's collapse live. never watched anything that painful before. not only was 6 strokes ahead, but lost by 5 strokes. nick faldo said "it was the only time ive felt sorry for someone ive beaten" norman was never the same after that.

My first memory of watching golf is the 1996 Masters, so maybe I feel a little sense of....I'm not sure what, but I feel compelled to go to bat for Greg Norman. History will forget how good a player Norman was. While the 1996 Masters is undoubtedly what he'll be most remembered for, he won a few events past that; he also had wins taken from him far more than given away. He was also the best golfer on the planet for most of the early 90's.

I was a huge Faldo fan and remember placing little bets with my brother-in-law (who was rooting for Norman) throughout that last round. I won every bet, as Norman did have a tendency to do that type of thing.

Tiger has held the outright 54-hole lead 45 times in his PGA Tour career. He went on to win 43 of them, good for a 95.6 percent clip. For context - over the last three PGA Tour seasons, players with an outright 54-hole lead have gone on to win 39.7 percent of the time.

An he has never come from behind to win a Major championship in his career. That is odd for someone who won 14 majors. Basically, if he's not leading or Tied for the lead by the end of the 3rd round in a major, it's a 99.9% chance he will not win.

This is the best golf instruction video ever made. I suffer deeply from this as I imagine most golfers do - accept your mistakes and move on. And also accept that sometimes your swing goes to the Bahamas for a few days. That's golf!!

Greg Norman‘s meltdown. At the masters, was the first time in my life I ever watched golf. I was an athlete at that time I thought Golf was for old men but after watching that masters I realized it’s the hardest game in the world and I’ve never stopped playing it.

Iwas at Royal Lytham the following year and watched him play most of his practice round alone. He was gracious enough to autograph my ticket though. it's odd that for all of the muddied thinking this guy putted really well.

Worst collapse I ever watched live had to be Greg Norman at the 1996 Masters. It actually made me feel ill just watching it on TV. Momentum in sports is an amazing thing. It can turn quickly and when it does it is almost impossible to stop.

Dom Wings his choke in 2009 at the PGA could be on here. Really Tiger’s only choke of his entire career. He’s only ever lost 1 playoff, all the way back in 1996 so it was definitely not a choke!

There is no meltdown quite like Van de Velde's, but what makes that priceless is Peter Aliss's commentary.... the best golfing running commentary I've ever heard... I laugh out loud every time I listen to it... particularly when he says to "give him a large brandy" and "mop him down"...

Snead and Palmer were both top-tier all-time greats. Worsham really pulled a scummy move on Snead by making an issue of who was away with that putt in the '47 US Open.

Think you nailed it. Pretty much the top three ever (I think they're kind of at a tie for GOAT)--and they were just mentally tougher. The other two that, I think, round out the top 5, Jones and Hagen, also had no notable chokes, at least as far as I'm aware.

Jack going +1 on the final 9 at the 1971 Masters ... Tiger shooting 75 on Sunday at the 2009 PGA Championship ... Hogan's missed two-footer on 18 in the 1946 Masters ... just because they didn't include those instances in the video, doesn't mean that they were immune ...

The Inroad I think it was A choke as he had one bogey in the first three rounds and then two doubles and two bogeys in the final round. He is one of the if not the best ball striker on the tour and it was very unlike him. I would say he choked.

Spieth's collapse is certainly tempered by the fact that he is already a Masters champ, and he won The Open in a way that eliminates any doubt about his grit coming down the stretch IMO.

Federico Russo yeah.. in 2015 he statistically was one of the best drivers on tour. Everything was clicking.. unbelievable year. What people don’t remember is along with his 5 pga tour wins (2 majors), he had also two other worldwide wins, and he also won the hero world challenge by over 10 shots. He was otherworldly that year

Speith's "collapse" is really a bump in the road. The guy won The Open, and was he ever tested on that final day...and passed it with flying colors. Willet has not really backed up that Masters with anything notable since.

It’s the wind. As you saw Tiger knew that with that wind long left/middle is the play. Every shot to the right of that pin not perfect is water bound. Happens every year.

Everyone in range of tiger in 2019 hit the water on 12, it almost looked like it was on purpose so tiger could win and solidify his comeback. Conspiracy, yes, but the Tiger effect is very very real. Everyone out there makes more money when tigers in the field!

Les Moore yeah that Sunday pin placement is just SO inviting, the pros understand on 12 if you hit that extra half of a club to keep you on dry land, you could easily end up on the a lip of that bunker on the backside. Where It’s extremely easy to make a 6 or 7 after you hit one a little bc of a bad lie. Ask Jeff Maggert, he had a 5 shot lead going to final round in 03. Takes a triple on 1, then fights back and is tied for the lead and then hits one deep on 12 and then hits through the green back into the water on 12. Has to walk back across the water to drop, makes 6, Loses by 2 shots.😬

Faldo got really lucky with two of his Masters wins. One guy missed a 2 foot putt, and Norman had a major meltdown.

He also won his second Masters in a playoff. Raymond Floyd (47yrs) had a 10-12 footer for the win - it was on target but terribly short. Two years in a row his opponent was putting for the major, but Faldo escaped and quickly made them pay.

Jason W first of all Faldo’s Sunday was good enough to catch Norman even without the collapse (Faldo beat him -5 to +6), but I’ll help you out and throw Paul Azinger’s choke at Muirfield in 1987 and John Cook’s choke at Muirfield in 92 on the list too, because the reason Faldo kept winning in this fashion was by design. Faldo’s whole strategy was play steady golf, playing for a particular score, and let the other guy make mistakes. Help him into it by not talking to him or even acknowledging his presence at all. We all know Faldo wouldn’t have missed the putt Hoch did.

Norman's meltdown was caused by Faldo's excellent 67 on the final day, pressure does funny things to people, professional or not. Floyd's second shot to 11 was caused by Faldo's arrow like, long tee shot and what had happened the previous year i.e PRESSURE. Faldo's up and down at 12 is THE BEST I've ever seen and to cap it off, his bunker shot at 10 in the playoff was sheer perfection leaving himself an uphill putt, unlike Hoch the previous year leaving his first putt short and downhill (that putt was way longer than it looked). The difference between Faldo and Hoch was course management at the right time not luck.

No player gets lucky when they win. They carded the lowest score, and their journey there, and their opponent's, doesn't matter. Paul Lowry really got ripped off in that 99 Open in terms of credit. Everyone just remembers it as Van de Velde's throwaway, but had Van de Velde gotten the triple on an earlier hole, everyone would remember that Lowry shot a 67 and started the day 11 back: greatest comeback in all Major history.

I don't consider any of these 'collapses' at all. You have good holes, you have bad holes, and it's just a matter of luck. I don't think these guys "lost their nerve" - they just didn't hit good shots when they needed to. Plenty of guys behind them are spraying the ball all over the place.

Back in the day of the dunhill cup. Stood behind norman on the 18th at st. Andrew's. Dark skies up ahead, pulls out the persimmon with a sweet spot the size of a pinhead. His drive went for about 100 yards 20 feet off the ground, then the back spin kicked in and with the dark skies, it looked awesome.

As someone mentioned, Doug Sanders. Also to complete the Nick Faldo hat trick, 1990 Ray Floyd Masters up 4 with 6 to play, including bogey on 18. Nick won his three Masters in historic fashion. He shot in the 60's each Sunday.
