This was filmed from a 19ft vessel choppy water.. not anchored.. navigating among neighboring vessels.. with a compact Canon HD camera.. so expect some bumpy video at times..
Oh Boy Oberto Pulled ahead just before the finish line to an apparent victory after Graham Trucking had lost its stabilizing wing.
But in the end, Oh Boy Oberto was penalized 1 minute for a slight encroachment and bumping into Graham Trucking.
Best Final Race in Seattle History?

Pretty sure bill muncey and dean Chenoweth duking it out made this look like child’s play. You simply cannot compare these drivers to legends...

Apparently you have forgotten about George Henley and all the Bud vs. Pak duels. At least they were racing at speed. In the Muncey and Chenowith days the laps were 30 mph slower.

@@jimhamel My family was connected to Henley and Chenoweth and muncey. All the greats. One of my relatives was a famous hydroplane driver. So I’m well aware but thanks. And “racing at speed” is kind of a lame comment, but I’m sure you are merely a spectator of the sport

@@nordicpride9708 Yes I've been a spectator since 1959 and have seen more than a hundred races, many in person. In the 60's Muncey (who I agree is a legend) used to beat everyone by hugging the bouys in the corners at a speed that was almost off a plane. 100 to 105mph was a fast lap even with mile long straightaways. Boats today would be running 160 mph laps on 2 mile courses if not fuel governed so yes, "racing at speed" is a relative term. Muncey and Chenoweth won a lot of races but I don't recall a single race where they went deck to deck for 2 laps, let alone for an entire heat. In the days of the piston engines, I don't recall a single race where two boats went side by side for 5 laps like the race in this video, or the 2018 heat 1 race between Andrew Tate and Jimmy Shane.

@@jimhamel It isn’t a “relative term” when racing is racing. Someone who has watched the sport evolve should realize that. I could say the guys who raced with canopies wear “weak” and “not real skilled”, and it would be much the same as discrediting the guys in the 60’s and 70’s for having lower lap times. Simply just a lame way to put it. But again you are a spectator, never built or raced hydroplanes. I grew up in a unlimited shop. However I’m not some hydro buff that tries to pass off terminology as the gospel. Chenoweth was a great driver and the technology advancing thanks to the U-95 as first and all other turbines that altered the sport won’t change that. I’m quite sure your assessment doesn’t stop at unlimited hydroplanes and also applies to car racing. Dale Earnhardt would suck compared to a current driver..🙄

I just watched the onboard footage of the Oberto and the Graham Trucking. Oberto should NOT have been penalized that one minute. Graham Trucking bumped the Oberto after the Graham Trucking lost its horizontal stabilizer. There was damage to Oberto's left side sponson. He was holding his line, and Graham ran into him.

After watching the Gold Cup in the Tri-Cities slip through our fingers in rough waters on the last lap, it looked like a repeat of the same. Although our boat lost his wing prior to the last lap and his handling and center of gravity were all messed up, Jimmy made the mistake of getting too close and baging a hole in his left sponson on the first trun of the final lap. Yes, he may have won outright without the incident,BUT it happened and he ran into JMK although JMK also bobbled a bit.

The only race to rival this one in the old days was the duel between Howie Benns in the Miss Budweiser, and George Henley in the Pay N Pak.

The Greatest Race? How could anyone tell when we had better filming coverage in the 60’s. All you can tell is the rooster tails are close together. This is only 6 years ago. This can’t possibly be the best filming of the Greatest race ever. Tell me it ain’t so. Just to be straight it was also the worst closed captioning as well. If anyone has the link to a better coverage of this race I would be so thankful if you could throw it up in the comments. Hate to be so neg but it’s pretty hard to tell who’s who when all you can see is the rooster tails.

Nice. I remember the days of the thunderboats when Chip was driving the Atlas against the Griffon Bud. So you usually had the best driver vs the best boat until Jim Lucero designed the first competitive turbine boat that ran as the Atlas in '84 and then later became the Miller American. Then you had the best driver driving the fastest boat. Those were some good times.

Surprised the radio announcers weren't told of the penalty on Oberto , by the time the boats went around the first turn after the checker we knew in the pits.

The greatest race? Not! That was Steve David and Dave Vilwock running deck-to-deck in a final, somewhere. Most of it was filmed from a helicopter. It starts out with the commentator talking about the salmon in the river. I've been trying to find that video again for several years.

Think you maybe thinking of a heat from Evansville IN. Maybe 07 and ended with Dave going over. That whole weekend Steve & Dave battled, heck it was the whole year.
