@@bbcr11 Yeah, it wasn't exact down to the finer detail but it gave a good insight into running a family, being under threat from inside and outside the family, how Michael went from a kid into a fully fledged mobster(which is what did happen in that life), how people came to the Godfather with problems, etc.

Donnie brasco and carlito's way are both special Pacino movies.. they are fantastic films but they kinda fly under the radar due to sheer greatness of the filmography of Pacino...
@@rodycaz8984 ya gf 2 is basically a masterpiece, if there wasn't a book you would think how the hell did somebody come up with this so kudos to Mario ouzo first and foremost then to the director for litterally never having to make a movie agai it cementing himself up there with George Lucas's star wars and all of Spielbergs movies. If I was godfather director I would've never made a movie again as to not be remembered for putting out a bad picture on the off chance he did but always be known as the guy who did godfather.
A large chunk of Clemenza’s scenes were funny and unforgettable besides the cannoli one, his recipe for spaghetti is a classic and his thoughts on how Hitler should have been stopped cold in 1938 at Munich and how rival family feuds in the Mafia are good for getting rid of bad blood every ten years or so.
F. Coppola also stated in gf2 how he wanted clemenza in gf2 but couldn't come to terms because he wanted a friend of his to write his dialogue. Also because Brando did not make that much money on gf1, that's why you don't see him in the final family scene on gf2. He, Brando didn't feel they gave him what he should have received for gf1.
@@pizzareviewwithkarrighione5576 It depends on the viewer either folks prefer the Realistic or the Romantic adaptation of life in the mob. Then again even in Godfather especially 2 and 3 we see the effects in the family. In the second film his wife tells him "I got an abortion and I want a divorce". Then in the 3rd film his daughter got caught up in middle of gunfire and was killed. Plus we see a guy GF3 who still is haunted by what he did to his brother, even though at the time he felt justified into ordering the hit on Frado.

I think if the HBO Gotti movie had a cinematic release and more exposure we (the public in general) would be talking about it among the greatest mob movies ever.
There is one spot of humor in Godfather when Clemenza tells Michael to “tell that nice girl you love her… ‘I love you with all of my heart, if I don’t see you soon ima gonna die’ “ touch of comedy
I consider The Godfather and The Godfather Part II to be one movie. They tie as my all-time favorite film. Both films come as close to filmmaking perfection as we'll ever see. Even the deleted scenes were amazing. The scene when Vito rounds up Michael, Fredo, Sonny and Johnny Fontaine to go visit Genco in the hospital tells the viewer all they need to know about Vito's viciousness. When Genco begs Vito to stay because he believes Vito will scare away the Grim Reaper in powerful. I also liked the extended part of the scene in the garden when Vito and Michael are talking. In the original beginning they're walking Michael : What about Sonny? What about Sicily? Vito : I swore I would never break the peace. Michael : won't they take it as a sign of weakness? Vito : It is a sign of weakness Michael : You gave your word you wouldn't break the peace. I didn't give mine. You don't have to have any responsibility. Great dialogue. My favorite Godfather moment is when Michael visits Vito in the hospital.and, after moving Vito into another room to protect him, leans over and tells Vito "I'm with you now." and a tear streams down Brando's face (a real one). I took that as Michael's first step into the family business. When Michael and Enzo the baker are standing outside the hospital and Enzo is shaking, the shaking was real. The actor who played Enzo got to meet Brando and he was Star struck. The soundtrack was memorable. The opening geme, the love theme (when Michael was in Sicily) are very memorable. I also loved the music that played in Part II when Vito comes to America on the boat. As for III. One thing I never realized until I watched the Coda cut was that actor/comedian Don Novello, who played the character Father Guido Sarducci on Saturday Night Live played Michael's assistant. In tge 90s he went to Fenway Park here in Boston to exercise the ghost of Babe Ruth.
I can also appreciate the Godfather a bit more because of it's depth. It's not easy to create a sustainable trilogy from the story of a single family. They actually stretched the storyline all the way back to Italy. For them to pull the movie off the way they did (especially in the 70's) was a huge effort from a lot of people, particularly the actors/actresses. Goodfellas on the other hand was a bit more about what life can do to people in America. Was more about committing sins and just living the fast life, rather than making it through a generational struggle. I think people can appreciate the contrast between the two though. Scorsese is too much of a genius to not appreciate his scope.
I think it'd be cool if they did a Godfather prequel!! Start after Vito kills the old Mustache Pete. I know they touched on it some but a whole movie would be cool.
Nothing to do, the godfather portrays the elite, the guys at the top of the business, grown men, carlo gambino, lucky luciano... Good companions are a bunch of rats, addicts, who are trying to prove something in the streets, mere associates.
Not really because Henry, jimmy and Tommy weren’t cosa nostra so they didn’t have the pull they had in the movie paulie was their boss not “the boss” he was a capo
@jem2886 they were still associates, though. I'd argue that Casino shows a reasonably accurate portrayal of how La Cosa Nostra operated with Capos and other made men.

As far as funny moments I think in Godfather 2 when the landlord got scared because he talked back to the mob boss when he didn't know who Vito was. lol Then he comes, gives the money back and even lowers the rent of the lady he had kicked out.

@@MoejiiOsmanTV I love how reasonable Tom sounds like in that scene, even though he loves Vito as much as his real kids do, to Sonny it sounds like he doesn't love Vito but in reality Tom is trying to save everything Vito has built all his life because going to war like that is super risky.
Goodfellas. Everything about that film is great, my one grip with it is the final act seems a bit rushed and isn’t as fleshed out as the rest of the movie. Other than that I could watch Goodfellas hundreds of times and never get bored.
I have to pick "The Godfather" hands down. Al Pacino did an excellent job in his performance/roll in "The Godfather." In fact, Al Pacino did an excellent job in "Scarface" too! I just did not like the sad parts or the swearing. Watched both movies several times! Always love hearing your input on the subjects you discuss. God Bless You, Michael!
For me not swearing in films or tv series brings an unrealistic view to it. For example Sons of anarchy. The guys are very tough and ruthless bikers but none of them says the f-word even once in the series. It just feels kinda stupid.
@@TheSorsastaja187 But Scarface just had very excessive swearing. Tony Montana was almost like a teenager when it came to his language, and even though it could be argued that he was a coke addict, there was a long segment of the film where he wasn’t smoking coke, and yet was still swearing like crazy. There’s a point where it does seem realistic, but then it becomes unnecessarily zealous on it. Neither of the other cartel leaders in the film swear as much as Tony.
@@juanjoyaborja.3054 That is bcs Tony is and act like teenager. He is selfish, stubborn, greedy and wants it all to himself. And that leads to his own destruction. And i think its very realistic. It suits to the character really well.
As always Michael, your perspective is profound! I think one more category should of been added which you briefly mentioned at the beginning of the video...social impact. I think this is why there's such a big debate between the two films, the generational appeal. However, you can settle the debate because you experienced both generations and lived the life. You know how it affected both members of LCN and the general public.
Hi Michael! I hope that all is well. I am delighted by the return of movie content. My favourite film is the Godfather because the movie I saw at 16 changed for me with each subsequent viewing. Depending on my age, I honed in on different themes. I think the sign of a great film is one that makes you reflect on larger issues. I hope that you will review non-English language films. Some background to where my opinion comes from: I read the book, a few times, before seeing the movie (which, thinking back, amazes me - as I was only 10 when the movie came out) The book is so full of wisdom, culture, incredible character development. That the movie(s) were so successful in capturing the ferocity and the subtlety was truly amazing. Even when Appolonia stumbles a bit and falls into Michael, and the old chaperones chuckle, a moment so subtle in the movie, was in the book. The elders chuckled because she never stumbled on those hills, and it showed she had interest in this handsome mysterious American. My first impression of Goodfellas, flipping through channels, I found the scene where Tommy murders Spider. I thought it was so outrageous it would never happen in real life, and I turned it off (little did I know then) My vote goes to The Godfather. The life lessons - family, loyalty, power, influence, "friendship" - just incredibly powerful. The shocking explosions of violence were unbelievable at the time, and are still legendary. The catchphrases are still epic. The cinematography was gorgeous (as was Puzo's writing) Goodfellas is an excellent film, and no question is in the same league. The storytelling is remarkable, the acting superb. The fact that it does reflect real people and events makes it more chilling. But Godfather will always have the edge for me.
I agree.. plus Godfather story of the books also follows in Godfather part 2 and they expand on that story further showing Michael's reign as boss.. Mario puzo being involved in 1 and 2 really translated the details of the book very nicely and created a great follow up to Michael's cold and calculated reign.. they could have very well used Vito's story of growth even more and made a movie out of it with him dealing with the chaos in new york and establishing the five families and show Sonny 's short reign as boss when Vito was shot by the Irish gangs for the first time.. I really enjoyed the book after being fan of the movies except the chapters which go into nino and Fontaine and Lucy..
@@SK008 agree the Nino, Lucy and surgeon stuff really didn't add anything to the overall story. Also agree another whole movie could be made picking up Vito's rise past where he was in GF2. What we saw was just his beginning. His takeover of gambling and unions, expansion of Genco Puro Olive Oil, his wisdom of cultivating friendships including police, judges and politicians, his early association with Hyman Roth, and especially his cultivation of Luca Brasi. Then the experience of the war where he got shot and Sonny stepped in. Even how Sonny joined the "family" business in the first place, witnessing Vito kill Fanucci. "Every man has but one destiny"
The scene in Goodfellas, when the crew was at Tommy's mother's house, and Peci aka Tommy commented on his mother's painting of the guy on the boat: "hey, what do you want from me?" Hilarious.
Mike, I'd love to read your autobiography. You've demonstrated a fantastic understanding of film making in general, and certainly are well spoken enough to be able to present your subject matter. I can see a future for you in teaching a course in film making in any of the most reputable schools. Your breakdown of the Godfather and Goodfellas shows not only an understanding of the subject matter but excellence in performance. Kudos my friend.
A truly fair analysis on both fantastic films. I have co-workers who hate both but that automatically discredits their ability to watch and enjoy a good film. These two are complete masterpieces in their own right.

@@Anne-pv9cb Yes, it was a fictionalize composite of some real events, like the story of Johnny Fontaine and the band leader which was based upon rumors about Frank Sinatra breaking his contract with Tommy Dorsey.
There was another funny part in the Godfather. When Clemenza was teasing Michael about not saying I love you to Kate on the phone. But Goodfellas is definitely "funnier" between the two. Haha. Thank you for the awesome content. 💯
For me, Casino. And strangely enough, Sharon Stone is the one who's killing it in that movie. Oscar/awards material all along. For sure Godfather and Goodfellas are up there. Godfather is THE mafia movie, the OG, the GOAT. But still, Casino takes the cake for me.

Hard to believe Ray Liotta is no longer with us. I always felt he could've been a huge A-list star if he wanted to be. He always seemed so humble and down to earth in interviews. Hollywood didn't deserve him, but I'm grateful for his work. RIP. For me it would have to be Godfather. Sometimes when a story is being written from scratch, they can take more creative liberties. I just love that epic feeling that the Godfather gave me. Everything felt "big". Vito lived in a big house, had a big family, lots of power, etc. Both movies were excellent, but Godfather has that immersive quality that draws you into its world. Whereas with Goodfellas, I'm more like a fly on the wall. The violence and betrayal is more raw and on display. It makes the in-movie world unappealing, but you can't look away, because you're seeing a side of the real world you don't have access to.

Godfather has always been my favorite mob movie. Just a classic film with excellent acting and an excellent story told incredibly well. Still amazing after 50 years.
The greatest theme song of any movie or anything period is the Godfather theme song. It plays in my head at job interviews, negotiating deals on Facebook marketplace, and compromising with my boss (spoiled daughter) 😂
Goodfellas is amazing, and extremely re-watchable (I would know) but Casino is almost a funner movie to watch. Funner setting - Las Vegas, sunny desert weather, it's much longer than Goodfellas, but it is every bit as captivating.
All the side characters are so great too. James Woods the pimp, Frank Vincent, the Red Neck slots boss, Don Rickles the Manager, and the guy who “could fuck up a cup a coffee”
I have to say "The Godfather" is my favorite. I like Brando a lot. In 1954, when I was born, "On the Waterfront" won the Oscar for best movie. Then I graduated from high school in 1972 when "The Godfather" won the Oscar. Thanks Michael and God Bless you, your family, and all your team.

After consideration between the three of my favorites: 3. 'Mobsters', with Christian Slater-----> loved the wardrobe-----> historical, yet kinda like an overcooked stew. 2. 'Once Upon a Time in America', with Robert Deniro, James Wood and Joe Pesci. --------> well done, great sound track and the sets were awesome. 1. 'Donnie Brasco'. The story line allowed the viewers to observe the multi faceed windows of "the life," and it's dangers, sadness, violence, emotional tolls, violence, sorrows, brotherly love and uncompromising mob/mafia rules. So yeah, Donnie Brasco is my go to related favorite.....not to mention the acting skills of two of the finest men (Al Pacino and Johnny Depp) Hollywood ever show cased. note: not to change my 1-3 listing, I have to add,, 'The Godfather ll' gets my 👍🏾 as the most iconic in regard to Francis Ford Coppola genius in weaving together the past and present flawlessly.
I hope the full length Sergio Leone directed "Once Upon a Time in America" is on the list - its easier to watch in two goes but the full length one is the best. Thank you for your content - its some of the best online. Hammer on brother.
I must have watched Goodfellas 2-3 dozen times.....absolutely incredible movie! And yes, the Godfather is untouchable for it's feel, story, character development and overall presentation. That said, the one movie that really hits home for me......A Bronx Tale.....I cry every time at the end, at Sonny's funeral. And who can forget the greatest line EVER...."now you's can't leave"
Just finished the interview you did with Jordan Peterson. Wow! He asked you such good questions. I feel like even though I've heard you tell the stories before the way JP broke them down and asked the next question really have a better understanding of you as a man. Not Michael the mob guy but Michael the man. And the way you described the apostles as men's men and talked about that was something I'd never thought of before and really made me think. It was awesome!
Right before Michael met with Solozzo and McCluskey, he was on the phone with Kay. She wanted him to tell her that he loved her. He got away with not, but Clemenza chided him gently for it. Not high comedy, I know, but it made me smile. Respects and blessings.

I find myself enjoying Goodfellas a little more, for the pacing, the chemistry between the actors, the soundtrack, the energy of the scenes, the way it showed you highs and lows

My great grandfather was from Antillo, sister town of Savoca, where "The Godfather" was filmed In Sicily. Loved it! - including the soundtrack. La-da-da-da-dah, dah, dad - da! By composer, Nino Rota.
Both movies are at the top and not only in their genre. Its propably also a tie for me, but if you consider all 3 (yes even the 3rd one), you must give it to the Godfather franchise.

Hey Mike, The fact that you were talking about it a bit ago I just finished watching "The Offer". It was interesting, as well as after experiencing a fair chunk of life/human nature (I'm 64) not incredibly surprising.
For me, the mark of a great movie and great storytelling is how real the characters become to you. After watching The Godfather, Parts I and II, you believe that you can see how the main characters would react to situations outside of the movie plot. You're that invested in the characters. You're that immersed in the fictional world.
Absolutely agree on the soundtrack of good fellas.... I can't have a back yard BBQ with out playing... Speedo, rags to riches, baby I love you..... 5 way movie tie ... Godfather, Goodfellas, casino, Gotti 96, and A Bronx tale ....
Listen, this is a tough one for me. I grew up on both films. If you'd have asked me to choose in my early 20s, Goodfellas hands down. Late 20s onwards, Godfather. Today, I would still choose Godfather because the acting was none like I've ever seen....absolutely BRILLIANT. Everyone played their part to the T. You were drawn into the movie because of the characters' portrayals. It was believable and unforgettable. I quote lines from Godfather during teachable moments in my own life. But overall, I think your scoring was pretty on point Mr. Franzese. I loved this sitdown. And just like Godfather and Goodfellas, I'll be watching it again. Not now, gonna have dinner with the family🤣 but soon. Blessings!

i think the scene with sonny, tom, and michael discussing the assassination of solozzo was the funniest scene in the godfather. sonny added a touch of wit with james caans spitfire delivery. and luca brasi being a nervous wreck with don corleone made me crack up (especially since it wasnt totally intended).
Godfather will always be great, but Goodfellas is and always will be my favorite. The late great Ray Liota, Robert Dinero, and making Joe Pesci such a badass, epic! Just EPIC
I think with The Godfather it really hits on the importance the mafia places on family and looking out for one another. The scene I have a tough time watching is when Carlo beats up Connie.
Mike, I love your show and I wish you would run for office. May sound crazy to some, not me. I grew up knowing gangsters on Staten Island. I wasn't one. I knew them. You are not dangerous to a good person anymore. You're still dangerous to the wrong person, someone who hurts your family or someone who is just plain bad. I love that you've left the life behind and are a Christian. But some or a little more than some of the old you will always be in you. And that's not a bad thing. It makes you who you are. A formidable person and I love it when you comment on the government. God bless.
