When I was young I used to love going into a sporting goods store ( or maybe Sears), and checking out first baseman gloves.Other than of course a catchers glove, the first baseman’s’ glove always jumped out at you. Growing up in the SF Bay Area, my idol was Willie McCovey. I agree, it’s awesome to see the hidden ball trick properly executed!

I want to say the Uribe one was a particularly good instance of heads-up play by the defense. As the video shows it at least, It looks like Uribe only had his head down for a second or two (not with his back turned, getting up from a big slide, etc) and the fielders went thru all their machinations right in front of him.

AR Canada - The 1st baseman did have his foot in foul territory, but there's actually no penalty for that happening. So no, time should not have been called. The proper way to handle that is to have a coach bring it up with the umpire and the umpire will then bring it up with the fielder so that he can get it corrected. If the fielder continues to do it, then the umpire can direct him to correct it otherwise he risks being thrown out of the game.

@peterp2153
@peterp2153 6 лет назад
Some of the plays were truly trick plays, so wouldn’t be part of regular baseball strategy. I’d assume they try the occasional hidden ball trick at random or because the baserunner has a habit of wandering off the base so it’s worth trying (I’d guess there are plenty of times where the fielder thinks about it but doesn’t try, hence it wouldn’t even be noticed by the announcers). A few of these plays were definitely not tricks but just heads up ball and that’s where I’d say the strategy comes in. But yes, the amount of things going on at the same time makes it the most fun sport to watch IMO.

By the time a player advances past Little League, he ought to know this, and never ever miss touching a base when rounding, what to do when caught in a rundown, etc. Some are lazy though, especially some of the very dominant ones - who ironically might be the ones that end up in the majors, without having worked at this and drills! So you're the good guy here, to teach some of that :)

I can remember a Red Sox game in the Eighties--I don't remember the opponent--when Bill Buckner was the runner on first. The camera happened to be on him when he was just about to take a step off the base, and he suddenly stopped and grabbed the opposing first baseman's glove and looked in it to see if he still had the ball. He didn't, so Buckner proceeded to take his leadoff. He was a first baseman himself, and wasn't going to fall for that trick.

@joshuabailey3819
@joshuabailey3819 5 лет назад
Unnecessary to grab the 1st basemen's glove, just don't step off the base until the pitcher is on the rubber. If a pitcher steps on the rubber without the ball, it is a balk and he gets the next base.

@shadowwriter329
@shadowwriter329 2 года назад
To be fair intentional walks happen at lot and usually used to prevent big hitters from getting a play for their teammates to score. That being said you can only do that trick once in a game because everyone else will be ready for the switch even if they don’t do it.
@KenD67

I always hit clean-up so I got pitched-around and IW'ed a lot but I'd be the one trying to lull them...act like I wasn't ready to swing, and if the pitcher threw a lazy ball too close to the plate, F that, I'd swing at it. Got a double down the opposite-field line a couple of different times that way too lol

It all derives from the basic fact that the ball is in play unless time is declared, or (for some kinds of plays) the pitcher is on the mound. Not all that many players are even aware of the rules. They're just aware of the normal course of play, the way it usually goes.

I remember little league and our favourite trick out was when batter ran to first base and was safe , they were obviously allowed to over run first base,on their return to first base the first baseman would have the ball in his mitt and stand so that if the player passed him on his left the player would step over the line and be in the field of play and be tagged out,we even had to explain our tactic to the umpires but eventually they had to agree that the player only has the right to return safely from the out of bounds side of first base.We were ten years old, great days!

I don't feel as bad. I got caught on one when I was on third base and wanted to score. Our man on first base attempted a steal and the catcher jumped up with what I thought was a throw to second to get him, so I took off for Home. What he had done was to throw the ball high enough to look like a throw to second, but the pitcher jumped up in the air and caught it and had me dead to rights. Seeing the Pros being caught makes me feel better.

I got caught in a couple of 'pickles' on the bases - once b/c I made a mistake, thinking the 2nd out was the 3rd one - but in little league I knew the longer I could stay 'pickleized" the better my odds were of an errant throw. Sure enough...I wound up scoring on an error...catcher threw it over 3rd baseman's head. I strolled home lol

NY Yankees SS Gene Michael (17) was also known to pull the hidden ball trick. Love to see a vid of that.

The old 'hidden ball' trick! 3rd time I fell for it this week! Actually, I pulled this on someone leading of 2nd base when I was 9. It amazes me pros with a lifetime of experience fall for it.

Angel Hernandez is a joke of an ump having 5 blown calls in 1 game alone that were reviewed and turned over because he's an idiot and that was just what he got caught I'm sure he blew more calls

@@barbaragrrr No. They don't throw four wide on the intentional walk anymore...now the manager just puts up four fingers and the umpire sends the batter down to first base. Now if the catcher puts up four fingers and stands out wide, everyone just gets suspicious.

Right kids???? ALWAYS watch the ball hit the bat, watch the ball go in the glove, and, watch the ball leave the hand!!! It’s a simple game of simple concepts! But it is the most beautiful game EVER!!
