Greatswords Defending the Flag - Melee Games (Montante/Zweihander/Schlachtschwert)

Recorded during a melee game as part of our workshop on the greatsword (montante/zweihander), at Gathering of Wolves 2023 in Cardiff. In this scenario six greatsword users have to protect their colours (flag), aided by a Captain and two Sergeants equipped with single handers. They are opposed by a significantly larger mob all equipped with aingle handed swords. As this game featured montantes which are of realistic weight we expected light contact only due to the potential striking power. Experience levels were varied, with many doing montante for the first time. This game was intended to give attendees a flavour for a common scenario that these swords were used in after 30 mins of solo practice drills.
The conditions of victory for the mob is to take the flag back to their starting zone. The flag group must defeat all attackers to be able to win. There were three attempts at this scenario recorded, in the first two the attacking mob won and had 8 and 9 survivors, whereas in the third run the flag group won. This is clearly done with light contact and restraint, but even then it showed the massive strength of the montante in group fighting.
Thanks to Thomas Sylvester for filming these games and supplying the footage. It's a little shaky due to tired hands, but great to have.

The space of a RU-vid comment is not enough to describe how very much I want to do this, that's like the HEMA dream for me right there.

Interesting drill.

It was done in haste, so this was the first time they'd used the swords. Ideally the greatsword users would be the more experienced, and tallest fencers for the right effect. Means we need to do it again!

This looks really fun! Is it all synthetics, and if so, what are the brands/suppliers? I've never seen a synthetic montante before!

Primarily Black Fencer (particularly the montante) but there are some rawlings and other brands in there as well. Important to note than even a synthetic montante requires a lot of control.

All of the montantes are Black Fencer, a mix of Flamberge and Zweihander model. Most of the one handers are Black Fencer too, with some Knightshop models too.

Any plans for a pike melee?

We are working on plans yes. The difficulty is sorting out a way of making two or three part pikes for easy transport, whilst they also need to be cheap enough to get in a decent quantity. Hopefully we will sort it out in the near future.

im curious , at a shield/sword sparring would it work IF you lowered stance , what i mean is spreading your legs abit lower kind of like how you do with boxing

There are some styles of swordsmanship which use very wide stances, but there is a huge difference from boxing, and that is that with swords, not only are the legs a target, but a single good leg shot could be the end of you. So there are ways wide stances can work, but they present some massive risks when swords are involved. In shield work even more so as the leg is a huge target zone in that kind of fighting, and it's hard to cover it with your shield if you are so wide.

In this situation I would use crowd control (guard to guard). I think that since you have the weight of the greatsword, you can use the physics to maintain momentum (speed). Sorry for my english i used Google translator😅

How do you tell who is on what team since theyre all wearing black? Or are you familiar enough with each other to recognize movements and physiques?

There is no identifier here, though the weapons tell you for the most part as the core of one side all had montantes and the other is all single handers. Sometimes we used colour identifiers for this, but during this class things were tight and there was a constant turn around and so there was just no time to do it.
