A martial arts channel run by the two instructors and co-founders (The Thomas Brothers) of the Academy of Historical Fencing. Here you will find all manner of videos relating to the practice of historical European swordsmanship, from lessons to equipment reviews, sparring footage and articles. Whether you are an armchair general, a martial arts fanatic, a historian, theatrical fencer or a curious passer by, we hope you enjoy the channel.
We have been training since the mid '90s and formed the Academy in 2006 from the core members of our previous group, Gwent Historical Sword Club. The AHF has two schools that train in Newport (South Wales, UK) on Fridays (Caerleon Sports Hall) and Bristol (England, UK) every Wednesday (Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre). Visit the clubs page for more information. The school is run by a group of like minded martial artists looking to develop their skills and knowledge in a safe and relaxed environment whilst also sharing knowledge with like minded people.
US LE is completely militarized and they kill around 1300 people a year, many innocent of any wrong doing and they are used to terrorize and rob/imprison the guilty and innocent!
All the clubs near me are defunct. I own a full steel practice feder and montante. Just been learning some montante rules but what do you think is the best way to learn enough to start my own club?
brilliant display here coming from the straight rapier vs katana. True 2 heavens style would be slightly different and I believe more effective. Speaking from the katana side, it is key to maximize the advantages and push the disadvantages. At distance all advantage is rapier. So katana has to focus on closing. You can tell rapier wants to mostly use long hand naturally and keep spacing. Katana counter quite effective but mixing in stronger parry hits preemptively and closing distance gives Katana advantage while invariably rendering rapier useless. Every Katana attack whether off the counter or preemptive parry should always be followed with closing space. Make Rapier use dagger hand inside vs wakizashi.
Eso es un combate de esgrima en un combate de destreza española la mano y los antebrazos estaban protegido y en la mano izquierda llevaban una daga que Era tan letal como la espada además la lucha era en movimientos circulares no como en la esgrima
Weight and distribution is also something that I could immediately notice also in my limited experience, having held also a couple of 18th and 19th century originals. Many of the affordable reproductions look like original swords, but do not feel like them when you're handling them. I had not paid attention though that is was in large part because of the distal taper.
Let them retire with dignity Couldn’t have said it better myself. These old workhorses deserve rest. We should never forget how weapons like these advanced this art and took those first bold steps that led to the thriving sport we have today.
Actually you can't learn a "martial" art in many martial art schools today. Go figure! This is what this new mind blowing book titled Myths and blind spots in the fighting arts’ world. - After the Bible, it’s the next gοοd bοοk for you! Nothing of the kind in my opinion and necessary for all practitioners, especially sincere instructors. PS. To answer your question, you can learn ABOUT martial arts from books and the book I suggest has it all covered, more than many would wish.
I know nothing about sword fight but looking on the video I feel like katana is better for explosive attack while sabre is more flexible and better for defense
A greatsword mobtante vsvdane bearded heavy axe could be very interesting. Both cappable of chop a head or arm, both more or less at same weight, and seemed heights and battle distances, but probably with a diferent "language" at fencing, diferent way of fencing, different sweeps etc
Is it really a “vs” video if it’s a HEMA guy using a katana? That’s like having an mma vs karate video where it’s two mma guys buy one happens to be wearing a gi.
sabre win as its monility and more mobolity move but it dont have big sharpness and hard that help them block attacks from different heavy waepons. katana win as its sharpness and medium mobility also it can almost block all kind of heavy weapon except kanabo and something really heavy it cons is just slower and heavier so you can't use it with one have so you have more mobilty
showing the replay slomo of every hit takes the flow out of watching the duel if we want to slowmo replay, we can do that on YT ourselves just feedback
