This game hangs in the balance, as both defenses continue to dominant. Regardless who wins, this one will never be forgotten after what happened in the 1st half.
Charles Martin did the Bears a favor. Jim McMahon did a wonderful job of finding the wide open defensive back for the opposing team in his final 3 games of the season.
McMahon's throwing shoulder was shot at that point having never fully healed from the previous season and then reaggravating the injury in week 1 and then again in week 4. McMahon was a shell of himself for his remaining games in '86. Contrary to popular opinion, the Martin hit didn't cause the injury, but it was the final event in a sequence of many events that lead to the end of the season for McMahon.
The 1986 season was a perfect window into McMahon’s decline as a quality passer. McMahon played 6 games that year. Between the 1st and 12th games, he missed 6 starts due to injury. During that time he started out with 5 TD passes to just 3 INTs before throwing 6-straight interceptions without a TD in the final 3 games. Then he suffered the infamous dirty hit from Charles Martin that knocked him out for the season. Still, the decline was already apparent by then.
Observe his throwing motion in '84 and compare it to '86. He couldn't lift his arm before that hit. The shoulder separation ruined him. That was pre dirty hit.
McMahon played with wild abandon, Martin was a drunk with talent enough to get signed but he was on a 2-10 team and he was declining but not enough to stop him from delivering the ultimate cheap shot that very well may have come from another Bum known as Forrest Gregg! McMahon will always be a legend for this Bears fan!! I don’t know personally if McMahon was declining or just having a bad year due to that shoulder and the pressure he probably felt to keep playing but I don’t remember a Bears QB w more guts!!
@@JLamont45 agreed. Jim went on to GB Minnesota and Philly and actually played well in Philly. The. “Decline” was (imho) due to what McMahon called “The most boring offense in the league.” I would be different if another QB cane in and lit it up during that era but from 86-94 no bear QB under Ditka was anything resembling a gun slinger. (Tomczak, Fuller, Flutie, Harbaugh and Steve Walsh.) these were the qbs that played in that era. Make no mistake - the cheap shot didn’t help. But it’s only the end of his career die people who didn’t follow him past the bears.
McMahon has endured a season "I'm sure he would like to forget," according to Vainisi. He has thrown five touchdown passes and eight interceptions. "He hasn't been in shape," Vainisi said. He termed McMahon's performance this season "disappointing."
McMahon was injured with a separated shoulder which the Bears thought he was faking. His shoulder was trashed before Martin's cheap shot, the slam finished it off. Watch games from the previous seasons and you can see McMahon wasn't throwing the same way. Unfortunately Tomczak and Fuller were worse than an injured McMahon.
Mcmahon shouldn't have been playing. His shoulder was too injured. That old style turf was hard as concrete. Watch Payton play when the Bears were losing. That guy had the quickest moves of any running back all-time. Spinning out of tackles. Running through the tiniest cracks in the line. It didn't matter if the Bears lost because of their defense. I miss watching the greatest football player that ever lived.
randy wright always throws to his left!!!! according to my dad screaming at our white 13" rca rotary dial tv with matching contoured swivel pedestal stand
Love the upload! Two quick requests. I would love to see the week 3 1986 Rams @ Colts game. The other would be Week 14 Cowboys @ Rams game. I would love to see those two games.
I believe this was the last season of Johnny Morris calling NFL games on CBS. However, he did cover a horse race in Arlington Park (a Chicago Suburb of where he was doing local sports for the CBS affiliate WBBM at the time) in 1996. The race was CBS covering Cigar's final race which he won ending his career with a 16 race winning streak, Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery (yes, Bill Raftery) were also on that coverage.
Ryan Strnad Yes this was his last season Morris analyzing the Bears CBS games, the last one being the December home game against Tampa Bay. Because they won the super bowl the previous season, they were on national tv more often and Morris was relegated to working games not involving the Bears.
@@smg1665yea, us Packers fans remember the days of Ryan & Morris calling our games against the Bears. CBS had a setup up until the time you're talking about & coincidentally when John Madden got his bus that Summerall & Madden would call many Giants games (Madden had an apartment in Manhattan). like you said, Ryan & Morris did the Bears primarily and Dick Stockton & Wayne Walker (Walker worked out in the bay area) would focus on the 49ers. It's funny on how things would change regarding announcing assignments and game times. Even on NBC, we in Wisconsin always seemingly would get the LA Raiders with Charlie Jones calling them. BTW, Wayne Walker left CBS after the discontinuation of "local assignments" as well. Would eventually join 49ers radio working with Joel Starkey
@@survivor5044 I'm not 100 percent sure how that works but have you tried putting it as unlisted and puting on an unlisted playlist on your channel? If that's possible I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your help either way
@@_luke_3908 I tried it once, but they blocked it anyway. RU-vid screens the games for copyright claims before their posted, regardless if their public or unlisted. At lease I can post it to Facebook, but a lot of people don't trust having an account with them, which is understandable.
You crazy! What shit you smoking fool? Pass it up... if it wasn’t for that cheap shot bears would’ve been a contender all day! You seem like a typical fucking hater. Go back to moms basement chubs.
