I'm not an American, and looking at this from 30,000feet, seems like they will use any excuse to take the guns away from the ones that are trained to use them best. To all my fellow vets who use the VA Healthcare System, be proactive with your care. A lot of care slips through the cracks of VA void. Doctors want the best for their patients, but they are overwhelmed and inundated with patients. Lots of care fall into the category of "lost to follow up" that leads to deterioration of continuity of care. Like outside healthcare systems, polypharmacy is rampant because doctors don't know what you're taking unless you tell them - take responsibility for your care/health as much as possible. Now that said, we also have employees that crud on the bottom of the barrel and be better off working in fast food with no human contact, but they're still working at VHA.

PTSD, or CPTSD is as individual as the individual is themselves. Everyone is different and the level of PTSD they have and why they have it, is as individual as they are. The check boxes are completely useless but for some reason, it is how the government and the VA operates.

The whole PTSD thing is a mess. Not everyone gets PTSD, people have different levels of consciousness, some see something messed up and just dismiss it, some go to pieces. Some get PTSD form war, some get it from seeing a car crash. Wanting to off yourself constantly and ducking when you hear a gunshot are two different things. The Government's one-size-fits-all solution NEVER works because we are individuals, not a collective. So when someone does actually need help, they hide it, so they don't get flagged and screwed over.

I've had nothing but good interaction with VA for past 12 years - both in-house and through community care. The overwhelming majority of the vets I've ask re their opinion of the VA said they've had no bad issues with the VA. Have some of my vet buddies had bad experiences - definitely - but that's not the case for most.

Jameson makes an excellent point. VA, Military, Civvieland, it's all systems. You are a number in a database and everyone is covering their butt and making sure they meet their bottom line. You, or if incapacitated someone close to you, have to know how to work the system, and who to get in touch with, to get the benefits you deserve. No veteran deserves to be treated this way, but you must also fight for yourself.

My husband is a plastic & hand surgeon at the VA. He is “tip of the spear”. The complex surgeries he does for our Veteran’s cannot be done on the outside. It takes a specific type of team to take care of the patients. He worked for the VA, then he left and we opened our own practice and when the outside benefits were launched. It didn’t work. He is now back at the VA full-time because he loves it. He would be thrilled if there was never another Veteran that needed the type of surgery he does. As long as the Veteran’s need him, he will be there. I’m very sorry there are crappy doctors in the system. Veteran’s deserve better. 🇺🇸

I've been a veteran service officer for the VA for 6 years and I've never heard of anyone getting their guns taken away for ptsd or tbi. The only time I've seen this happen is a veteran admitting he's a danger to himself and others and has made credible threats. Even then, the VA has no obligation to notify law enforcement.

It's on the active side as well. Seen guys who needed to see mental health and the clinic tells them to come back in 6 to 8 weeks and they won't refer them downtown either. Earlier in my career none of the guys wanted to see mental health because once you checked in you were completely at their mercy. They never take "risks", they always play it safe, you could be completely normal and they'd still recommend you not be brought up. Then all of a sudden everyone around you starts treating you like crap because you can't do the mission.

Mike Glover is a trained combat veteran. The government doesn't want trained combat veterans to run around freely. If the government keeps doing what they're doing, combat veterans could step up and fight against a corrupt government. The government doesn't want that, so they will try and remove veterans from owning firearms. If you comply, you're good. If you don't comply, they want to take away your rights.

If anyone didn't know the VA is funded by the number of veterans enrolled in the VA system. A common disbelief is that the VA is funded by a list from the DoD that identifies the number of Veterans that have served. Even if you have your insurance, don't have a disability, or even a health problem please enroll in the VA. The more funding the VA receives provides better care for veterans and a better system you might need one day.
