For many years jets didn’t have any system to help the crew if they were passed out. Many pilots have lost their lives over GLOC accidents. It wasn’t until in recent years that a system called Auto-GCAS (Automatic-Ground Collision Avoidance System) was installed and the aircraft could detect if a pilot was unconscious and essentially level the plane automatically before it hits the ground.

btw guys, the 5th gen jets aren't beyond US's capabilities and we have jets equal to those if not better. They had to use a specific jet for the mission due to the situation of diving in and destroying the target, which are older, less mobile, and have more fire power than the 5th gen jets. Great reaction as always though!

As a Naval Aviator and Instructor, I can promise you that there is no one in the US Navy that resembles the "Bagman" character. Anyone with that attitude would be absolutely destroyed by an instructor in flight, and probably have his guts stomped out by his peers. For that matter, the entire cadre of pilots shown here would NEVER have the attitude depicted. "Everyone here is the best there is - who could possibly teach us?" I don't care if they are Top Gun graduates, no one would have that attitude. The INSTANT you think you have nothing to learn is when you die. That is absolutely pounded into the head of every aviator.

the "5th gen fighter" issue was addressed in the movie; there is a scene where there was a debate between the F/A18 and the F35; the script made up a hokey reason why the F35 didn't suit the mission but that was essentially a ruse because the real reason to use the F/A18 was because they needed the backseat. The Russian plane in the movie is formidable, but the F35 is a 5th gen fighter, so we are not out-matched in the air.
@PolymurExcel
@PolymurExcel Год назад
Yep, though I do gripe at the detail about them not using F35s, it is easily forgivable. Ignoring that the F35's interior has probably a lot of classified stuff in there the Navy doesn't want shown, there also aren't any two seated F35s in existence from what I know thus wouldn't allow Tom to get what he wanted for the movie.

We own the sky. We own the space above it. We own the world's oceans. Russia, China don't stand a chance. They have garbage compared to us. Straight garbage. They don't have real aircraft carriers, they're a joke. We have 11 nuke powered carriers. That's not even taking into account that we have nuclear submarines with our carrier groups. Unlimited range. This idea that insurgency takes down a military like ours is foolish. We weren't allowed to get the job done right and you know it. Let's point to some examples of doing it right. Germany, Japan, Korea. Have we ever left those countries? Nope. We have military bases all around their countries. Now look at our failures. Vietnam, Somalia, Afghanistan. What stopped us from "winning"? We could take Afghanistan back easily.
@jonathanlong4066
@jonathanlong4066 Год назад
The U.S. does have 5th gen fighters, f-22 and f-35. They aren't being used in the story because of the radar jamming on the mountain and laser guided bombs don't need radar to get on target making the f-15 or f-18 the only options. Since the f-15 is more geared to air suppression the f-18 is the better option because it does have a little edge in air to ground combat. But the real reason f-18's were used is because the f-22 and f-35 are single seat aircraft and they needed duel seats to film the way they did. The actors controlled the cameras while in flight.
@DowntownDeuce2

F22 is not a Navy airframe. Probably the main reason it wasn't used
@jonathanlong4066
@jonathanlong4066 Год назад
@@DowntownDeuce2 True its not, but that's not why its not in the film. They needed duel seated fighters otherwise they could have wrote the f-22 as easily into to the plot as they did the su-57 into the Iranian military. I don't think the f-15 is navy either come to think of it.
@DowntownDeuce2
@DowntownDeuce2 Год назад
@@jonathanlong4066 You're probably right. Nothing else about the plot made sense or adhered to military protocol or reality, that wouldn't have been much of a stretch for them. Few things about the movie made sense; it is unfortunate that they didn't budget more for technical advisors and screenplay. It was about as realistic and plausible as the Iron Eagle franchise. And, yes, the F15 is USAF inventory only.

The story with the enemy planes being 5th gen while the Navy were using 4.5 gen is a bit more on the logistical side for the making of the movie. I've been told that the USN would've definitely went in with F35s which are also 5th gen had the mission been real. It's just that Tom Cruise was VERY adamant about the movie being as believable as possible and that required the actors to actually ride in real planes to help get it as real as possible. The reason I am also told why they couldn't use F35s, besides the fact that a lot about it is classified, is that there aren't any two-seater F35s in existence.

The Air force has the system you’re describing. If it detects G lock; it will send warnings, if no inputs are detected it will level off the jet.

Love all your reviews. You guys are the shit in my mind. ( former F-111 crew chief which is aviation maintenance) To give you an idea of aircraft “ generation” breakdown this is how to look at it WW1 biplanes would be gen 1 WW2 propelled aircraft would be gen 2 (P-51) Early jets as in F-86 in Korean War would be gen 3 The iconic F-14,F-15 are gen 4 The F-22,F-35 are gen 5 as they possess stealth capabilities and thrust vectoring. Which is basically where the exhaust essentially move to assist in maneuvering among other Things. Hope this helps

Also they had mentioned during the G lock scene that it didn’t make sense to them. So there are some aircraft that will sense that the pilot is not responding and level wings before crashing, main aircraft I can think of is the Viper (F-16) mostly because that jet in particular has lost many pilots due to this exact problem. So a system was put in place, the F-18 might have this but the F-16 is used to pulling upwards of 9G’s on ACM and can become very dangerous for sure. Anyone know if the super hornet has this system in place?

Hi I enjoy watching your videos, thanks and keep it up! Awesome review, I never got to watch in theatres only at home. Afterwards I was like that really needed to cinema or better AV systems that my tv and sound system. The always go back and try back to help or rescue/recover is what allows people to do what they need to do. That is something missing in society, even some (maybe a lot) in the military There’s a reason the US spends so much time and money training PJ’s to the extent the PJ may be the more expensive man on the ground going to rescue another soldier/sailor/airman/marine but it’s the knowledge that someone within your unit or outside will come for you. You need that in the head that heaven and earth will be moved if that’s what is needed. We don’t have PJ’s in Australia and JTACs/CCT are new jobs to us in comparison to the US. But that it why we rely heavy on coalition support and we are grateful for that support our bigger coalition partners provide. It’s only because for the start of Afghan we had CCT attached to SAS patrols and they wanted them we ended up with a CCT job. At least in my limited experience that sitting in your mind made it possible to go on mission. Especially those ones you think I’m gonna die on but every effort will be made to rescue/recover and repatriate me home. Most of my career I was involved in repatriation of those who died, everyone was the best and worst day in my career. I am glad that I got to bring them home, I’m also sad for their family. Be it I’m on recovery or as part aircrew on the flight out of the country and at times carrying the casket. It’s not something I’ll forget.

As for the part about advanced, 5th generation fighters. The US does in fact have them such as the F-22 and F-35. The reason they weren’t used in the movie is because neither of those jets have a 2-seat variant where the actors could film sitting in the back seat. Tom Cruise was insistent on filming in the actual aircraft to create the most realistic experience (ie. G-forces, cinematography etc)

On the drop from altitude. The point was GPS was jammed, time over target would be in the sights of the SAM's which were mounted so they couldn't shoot down. The target had to be painted. An aircraft at altitude would be shot down before it could hold the laser on the target to impact. Diving down gave enough time in the valley to hold the laser on the target while the SAMs couldn't shoot them.

So, a issue you guys brought up about the planes I just wanted to address lol. So, the US has more 5th gen aircraft than almost any other nation combined, and many contracts for 6th gens as well. For the purposes of the movie they had to use 2 seater air crafts, which were the 4th gen planes. The f-14 tomcats were a perfect fit for the movie scenario, but also because actual pilots were flying the tomcats, and the actors were in the back seat of the planes. As far as the automatic ejection system, the problem they had with those, is if you have to remain below a certain ceiling in order to not get scoped by SAMs, then by the time you auto ejected you’d still be screwed. At least that’s what I think. Big fan of y’all’s channel, and thank you guys for your service.
