While Jane Fonda and Bob Dylan were badmouthing our troops during the Vietnam War every chance they got, John Wayne had the guts to make a movie supporting them. It was not a perfect movie and the critics savaged it, but a friend of my Dad told us that everything seen in that movie conformed almost exactly to what he experienced. The man was a Green Beret Major! Despite the critics, the movie was a box office blockbuster.

They weren't "badmouthing" the troops - they were educating people on the criminal nature of the american incursion into a sovereign country, and how the u.s. government was dragging innocent young americans into their war through propaganda. Innocent people like your dad, who was too young to know any better, brainwashed into believing it was a noble cause. Your dad is not at fault - but you and he should not fall victim to the misplaced fake patriotism the government sold you.

This movie is hilarious entertainment and even green berets laugh at this movie. You want a real Nam movie to show how it really was, there's Platoon, Hamburger Hill, Bat 21, Apocalypse Now aka Taking Acid in Vietnam, We Were Soldiers, Casualties of War, Full Metal Jacket. Those movies are exactly what Nam was like according to both my uncles and the Nam vets I met at the VA. This is movie is fun to watch though. A lot of it is pure bullshit. Stallone as Rambo is better Green Beret than John Wayne.

My father (MSG Joseph Morin) was one of 10 or 12 soldiers from Fort Bragg who was selected to appear in the Green Berets movie which was filmed at Fort Benning. I remember in 1968 going to a movie theater at Fort Bragg to watch it with the family for the first time. He had a speaking part in the movie, and I was so proud of him for that. The two weeks he was at Fort Benning for the filming, he told me John Wayne (The Duke) treated them like gold. Thanks Duke for treating my father so well, he remembered that the remaining 32 years of his life.

I remember I was a teenager in Columbus , Ga when John Wayne came here and made this movie at Fort Benning. And shortly after, I went into the US Army and served in Vietnam. My first assignment in Vietnam was to go to an area that had been over ran by communist two years earlier and retrieve the remains of green berets. Much respect for our special forces.

The best version of this ballad. Saw it in the theater in Enterprise Ala, Ft. Rucker, when it came out. My dad was a flight instructor and took me to it. Place was packed for weeks. All honor to Viet vets and Green Berets. THEY were the GOOD guys. Wayne and The movie cast and producers were very brave to make this movie when the red flag flew so much over Hollywood.

I live in UK, I have watched, oh so carefully of all footage, of so many wars as I am a writer. The United States men ho went and fought in such a terrible war, men from the USA who believed in their task to save lives, and in the process would, lose lives, within the ranks and in the local populations. These Men did not set out to harm innocent people, the Viet of North had already started that. So for the returning US Army, who did what they were told, SHOULD NEVER be called Baby Killers, and those that call them that, are only the cowards that cannot be a part of the Great American Forces
@cheriluna615
@cheriluna615 10 лет назад
And to you, who are from the UK, I bow for a very, very kind statement to the U.S. military men, because when the rich wage war, the poor die. And I give you my American thanks for not being ignorant, like sadly, so many people in my own country sometimes end up being. So… thank you.
@RPenta

Did any of them kill babies? If so, let's call them what they are and not be part of the cover up.
@Karnakthemagnificent
@Karnakthemagnificent 10 лет назад
RPenta ignorance is bliss only for the ignorant. To the rest of us it is an annoyance. The term "baby killers" is a pejorative, and was directed at American soldiers in general. In the course of the Vietnam war atrocities were committed on both sides. But there were also acts of extreme courage and compassion, I would suggest that you learn about someone by the name of Hugh Thompson before you spout that nonsense again.
@cheriluna615
@cheriluna615 10 лет назад
RPenta Sir, all is fair in love and war. Yes, we killed innocents in the Vietnam War. But so did the Vietcong. The Vietcong sent in children with bombs strapped to them to hug american G.I.s. Ka-boom. Just to prove a point. Civilians. You didn't know who the Hell was Vietcong and innocent in that war. It was screwed up. My grandfather fought in both the Vietnam and Korean War. So you saying that is insulting and disgusting. He was never the same after war. He hid in alcohol and a paranoia of his own family. These soldiers SUFFERED. In every war, innocents die. In WWII, yes, we killed innocents in Nagasaki and Hiroshima… But think of all the innocents the Japanese massacred in China. War is unfair and life is unfair on BOTH SIDES. Now in Afghanistan, it is Vietnam remade, only in the desert, and once again, we have no idea who the Hell is terrorist and who is citizen. So don't you DARE spout such ignorance. As LT Wong has said, ignorance is bliss only to the ignorant. Don't bring us who know the facts into it.
@RPenta
@RPenta 10 лет назад
You have not a freaking clue about Viet Nam and if LT WRONG had a clue, he would know over 2 million Vietnamese were killed in a war the USA had no business in--Viet Nam is across the planet from America and never threated it any way. By the way, douchebag, when you are fighting outside of a European Army in uniform as in say WW1-it is always hard to know who was who. Which is why so many innocent Vietnamese got killed by US forces-and NOT only in Vietnam but later in Iraq and Afghanistan.

My dad brought back from Viet Man a Green Beret. This was in 1969. I have seen this movie at least 30 times. Went from the 92nd Engineers at Ft. Stewart to the 1st Ranger Bn Ft. Stewart in 1977. Later on went to Ft. Bragg to NCOIC a small Engr. Det. called SWC ENGR.in 1987. Stayed with SWC for almost 5 yrs. Office was on Smoke Bomd Hill. Spent many a day out at Camp McCall. Tried for S.F. but was D.Q. because of hard ware in right ankle from parachute accident in Apr 1979 with an S.F. A Team. Funny HA. Anyway it was a kick in the gut. My dream was dead. However my time their was fantastic. I helped train and get the finest soldiers in the US ARMY ready for whatever. SSG/SFC TONY COLLINS 51H3/4V SWC ENGR. 1987-1992 Hello Lynett Horn /Ron Jahn.

It is so sad that the tragedy of Vietnam left an open wound that has not healed to this day and which has deeply injured the US. It is important to remember the heroism and sacrifice of those who fought there regardless of one's view of the war. They were just doing what they were told was their patriotic duty.

but this "open wound" could not stop the US of further "adventures"! whether in Iraq, Afghanistan and in the nearer future Iran. of course always in self-defence. btw. since WW II the US od A lost every military conflict. This was a terrific film,but unfortunately,it was released just when the anti-war movement in Vietnam was at its height. All too often the strength and courage of those men in Vietnam has been historically overlooked. Perhaps,one day,their Service for the United States of America will be recognised and honoured. Soldiers don't start wars,they finish them,and many give up their lives for their ideal.They deserve our gratitude and thanks.

My brother and I couldn't wait for the movie to come out in the summer of 1968. We watched it at the post theatre 3 times before our parents came looking for us. We were so excited about the movie they sent us home and then bought tickets to watch it themselves. It was all as phony as a three dollar bill, but to us kids it was a John Wayne movie like we'd never seen before. My brother became a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne and later did two tours in Iraq. I was an advisor with 7th SF Group in El Salvador in the 1980s doing stuff just like they did in the movie.
