I think the transition did work that fast from Tony's racism when he was it coming so open and hateful from others. His racism was embedded in Italian speech and his upbringing but in the South, the hate was so aggressive and forceful, he reacted to that. In reacting to that, it created a change in him because he didn't see prejudice as such a bad thing, but he then saw it for what it was.

I think the Green Book manual was used more as a symbol rather than an actual exploration of the book's contents. What was explored a lot in this movie was the theme of "allowed vs. prohibited"; where and what black people were allowed to be and do and what they weren't, and that was the purpose of the actual Green Book. It acted as a guide for black travellers, to show them the safest routes to pass, so that they could travel in peace. This movie didn't need to delve into the contents of the book to truly earn the title, "Green Book". What it did, and did so well, was explore the premise and primary theme of the actual book while also challenging it. Don was guided by the book- he made sure only to stay in "Black only" hotels, but he also challenged it by doing his tour- by him physically being in a space, performing an art form that back then was strictly prohibited for blacks. The only way you'd see a Black person in those spaces were if they were servants. In my opinion, I think it earned the title the "Green Book" and the writers and director did a great job of exploring the premise and theme of the actual Green Book manual without being super expository.

This movie came out of nowhere, all of a sudden I started seeing tons of commercials and buzz about it. I definitely want to see this because Viggo Mortenson and Mahershala Ali constantly surprise me with the roles they choose. Also they better cast Mahershala Ali in Black Panther 2 as some leading character.

I actually really enjoyed this film. The acting was indeed good. I actually dont think that Don Shirley was as unlikeable as Korey said 😂 I thought Don was misunderstood. He was trying not to be a stereotype and did not know how to relate to his own community. His line alluding to that point really hit me as I have definitely felt the same as a biracial person (Half African, Half Asian). A relateable identity crisis I would say the "Green Book" in thr story is an overarching metaphor of Tony using the Green Book or having to maneuver the South experiencing what Black people were going through firsthand 🤔

Here's a question for everybody. Why are films that cater to oscar voters with pretty visuals (example this, First man etc.) okay but films that cater to mass audiences with pretty visuals ( Independence Day, every Michael Bay movie) not okay?
@thoomolong
@thoomolong 5 лет назад
It's two different audiences. To oversimplify: your average movie goers loves the big budget spectacles and the critics and cineastes favor the so-called Oscar Bait or pedigree movies. Obviously films that cater to mass audiences are okay because the studios put way more money into them, millions more go to see them and they make billions more than movies like "Moonlight" or "La La Land". It's just that the mass audiences consume the film and go about their business. They don't write about it. The smaller Oscar bait films are usually loved by the critics who write about this stuff everyday, and their musings get space in the newspapers, magazines and big websites.
@JazGalaxy
@JazGalaxy 5 лет назад
I would argue that one of the biggest differences is that Oscar voters are a very small number of people whereas mass audiences are a much larger number of people. WHO they are is irrelevant. When you try to say something that a half billion people agree with and are not offended by, it becomes bland. And that is eyeroll worthy at it’s worst. It’s like a person standing up in a bar and leading a toast to babies. It’s bizarre and ridicule worthy in its lack of meaning.
