Green Day continue their careers with the 2024 release of "Saviors", an album being heralded as a return to form for the punk-rock / pop-punk trio. In this video we discuss why this album feels so different, and what I think about this album as a whole.

Revolution Radio and 21st Century Breakdown don't deserve to be lumped in with the trilogy and Father of All... like they do when ppl say Green Day hasn't been good since American Idiot. Those albums are both pretty good with some incredible standouts such as Bang Bang and 21 Guns respectively.

Rev radio is my second fav Green Day album and I had no idea it wasn't considered good! Sure it's not objectively the best album, but it has some great stuff hidden in it (my fav line "are you scared to death to live?" in Still Breathing, and the whole "A Better Way to Die" section in Forever Now).

You actually summed up this album pretty well. For me, the production quality is easily the best since 21st CB I very much noticed how great tre’s drums sound at times and Mike’s bass has some excellent parts as well and all the instruments are given their time to shine. The vocals, too, are incredible throughout - exceptionally so. I do think one issue that I agree with is that the lyrics aren’t particularly impressive most of the time. There’s a line or two that I’ll catch and be like “ah clever” but peculiarly there wasn’t a single song that I resonated with personally on an emotional level like I typically do with green day’s music. The closest I probably got was with “Dilemma” but that was about it I think. I also unfortunately think this is one of the least “creative” green day albums ever made but I don’t know that that’s even necessarily a bad thing. I just think it feels like they’re trying to play it safe and it comes across to me with a lot of the songs, that they’re supposed to be “stadium pop punk” songs meant to be played live for a good time and that’s really it. Overall it’s a really solid album and I like it. Easily the best since 21CB like I said.

this album feels like what Muse wanted to do with "Will of the People" but done right. You can hear every era of Green Day in every song. There is excellence in every track, some through lyrics, some through melody and some through pure skill and musicianship on display, that's why I can't find a true favorite track, so many of them stick out to me and right when i say "ok this might be my new favorite out of the record", the next one comes out and says "hold up, hear this". There's truly something for everyone in this album and that's its biggest accomplishment in my opinion.

I wasn't very hyped for this release, to be honest I haven't been hyped for a release since 21st Century Breakdown, imo that was the last complete release from green day that I can say I thoroughly enjoyed as a complete body of work. I did admire their little popup shows that they did prior to this, and I think that that is something that still pulls me into this band after a series of continuous pretty mid releases. what they did prior to this with the shows remind me of what they did with 21st Century Breakdown, if memory serves me right they did the same pop up stuff for that album. saviors is a fairly diverse album and it hits a lot of different tracks and vibes, everything from upbeat pop punk stuff like the american dream is killing me and 1981 to more slow ballads such as goodnight adeline and father to son. my main gripe with this album is that some of it feels like their stepping into their own tracks in the snow, with songs like the american dream is killing me sounding very reminiscent of east jesus nowhere. i wouldn't say specifically that the majority of the album is forgettable, maybe in a certain sense right, but to me it just seems to me like they have a sound for the band and a certain mixing style and songwriting style that i've already heard countless times. personally, and i know that i'm in the minority with my opinion, but father of all wasn't actually that bad. in totality like it's not their best piece of work, but i'd much rather hear something that sounds like their stepping out of their shell and experimenting with their sound rather than just releasing the same album over and over, which unfortunately is where saviors falls for me. thinking about the rumored drama behind the scenes with father of all and them just shitting out an album to get out of their deal (which i'm not sure is true seeing as how saviors was released under reprise) it seems to me like everyone shit on them when they were testing the waters trying to do something different and fell back into their old shoes. saviors is a strong 6 to a light 7. favorite songs: one eyed bastard, dilemma, the american dream is killing me, strange days are here to stay least fav: corvette summer, suzie chapstick " i got a robot and i'm fucking it senseless " - billie joe armstrong

The thing with this new album been released under reprise is it isn’t the same deal and contract. I'm a Green Day fan since "Dookie" but haven't bought their last few albums. Just father time and me not buying much music anymore, but this is one I bought. I hadn't been paying attention to any of the buildup for a new album so this one sort of came out of the blue for me and that was a good thing. I put it on and did the whole complete listen-through that you would do pre-internet and I honestly didn't think there was a weak song on it. Of course I have favorites and songs that probably will be skipped in the future, but this feels a lot like early Green Day to me. Even the album cover is nostalgic and reminiscent of "Warning".

I think my hot take for the post 21cb green day is that the trilogy itself was an interesting concept and a look into their songwriting process. If you take the best songs of each trilogy album you would get one of their best albums consisting of probably some of the following songs: - oh love - kill the dj - let yourself go - carpe diem - lazy bones - stray heart - stop when the red lights flash - xkid - amanda or walk away - 99 revolutions - dirty rotten bastards - the forgotten This wouldve been a really good album and probably less forgettable due to less "filler" than the rest of the trilogy.

I do believe that production-wise this album rocks. The bass sound is the difference you almost immediately notice between this album and the previous ones. Concerning the songs: I was hyped before the release, and I listened to the album from start to finish when it came out. My first comment, and I still stand by it, was that there are no memorable songs, but they all blend well together to give a feeling almost of a last ever Green Day album. What I mean is, there are a lot of songs that remind different eras of the band, and in the end you almost feel nostalgic because it's like you went through all of their discography in 45 minutes. I too find myself sort of "disappointed" in the blandness of some choruses and even some verses (for example the title track: when the song started I was immediately hooked, but it felt like I had waited for the "good part" for 4 minutes in the end). Exceptions: Father to a son is very memorable and perfectly orchestrated, and it's the highlight for the album in my personal opinion. That said, I am an easy to please fan too, so I'll listen to this album a lot in the next months, and it will surely grow on me. For me it's an overall 7,5/10

Considering it’s after Father of All, they made a good call to not take too many risks but I wouldn’t say they played it safe, they clearly just did what they wanted to do and took the time to make the album and have embraced all their different eras and put it into the one album

This is false. It was a rumour that was circulating in 2020, but Billie Joe has never stated such a thing and he has even defended Father of All as a record they actually wanted to make at the time. Also, Saviors is being published by Reprise Records, so it is not true that they were trying to get out of the record company.

@user-py3py5sx2f 7 месяцев назад
@@DanielCh9393 a few things to note, billie joe will never be able to say that they didn't care about the foam album because that would be a breach of contract. Artists are not allowed to make shit albums to get out of contracts and admitting it WILL lead to a lawsuit so we'll never know Saviors is also not published by reprise. They are using reprise for distribution only based on a new distribution contract. However reprise does not own the music and does not have any say in the contents of the music. All the rights for the music are with green day this time and they recorded the album and even the music videos with their own money

This album has a bit of everything. Its it’s probably top 5 in the way it sounds. Probably 5th behind nimrod, ai, 21cb and dookie. When it comes down to it it’s a no skips album and some of the best stuff since ai and 21cb Lyrics are meh on a few songs but Billie isn’t gonna write a rock opera or a dookie again. I believe he can do it, but as an artiest you have to do what is fulfilling for yourself. He’s playing around with his vocals as well and the whole band has evolved in a positive way overall I feel.

I don't like how 21CB gets completely overlooked and people just say that their post-AI albums are shit when that album is such a gem. (Idk if your inclusion of 21CB at 0:13 is because you think it's not as good or because that's what its reputation is due to being a post-AI release) It's my favourite album and I think a lot of these people who think Saviors is their first good album since 21CB don't get that they would be saying that about 21CB if it wasn't the follow up to AI and had those huge unrealistic expectations. A lot of Saviors really feels like it was inspired by 21CB like TADIKM, the title track, Living in the 20s, Coma City. These all sound like they're straight from this album and Billie's vocals probably sounds closer to 21CB than any of their other albums, even though both albums had different producers Regardless I'm still really enjoying Saviors. I think it is their best since 21CB but the trilogy has a lot of superb tracks throughout even if it's mixed with a lot of meh tracks
@PopPunkApologist

Howdy! Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I was more talking about general/critical reception since AI has been shaky. I remember reading about how bloated 21CB was at release, and how it didn’t live up to expectations set by American Idiot. I like most of 21st Century Breakdown, it’s definitely ambitious. Like you said, AI set expectations super high. It’s funny how Father of All had the opposite effect with Saviors by setting expectations 6ft underground.

I loved 21st Century Breakdown, the trilogy has some solid cuts & could probably be condensed into one solid record if you grabbed the greatest hits from the three records, Rev Rad has some of my all time Green Day tracks. Father of All was a fun record but ultimately it’s lesser in quality in a lot of ways. Saviors? I think the title is self explanatory. Say what you might about the lyrics on (X) track but the instrumentals are punchy, heartfelt & loaded with the identity of each member. From Mike Dirnt’s dirty bass to Tre Cool’s pounding drums, BJ’s guitar, it’s all incredible & authentically Green Day. I enjoyed this record way more than some of their work for sure, & I can’t wait to listen to it again & again.

I find it strange that as Billie has gotten older his voice has gotten higher in pitch. He sang lower (tuned to E flat) in the 90’s… usually when a vocalist gets into their 40’s-50’s their register drops. I like it still, but I miss the 90’s Green Day sound and style so much.

I'm not proud of how hard I laughed at "Mike Dirnt farting into a microphone for 30 minutes" This album is really great though, I've had it on repeat since it came out. My top five songs would have to be Dilemma, Bobby Sox, Living in the '20s, One Eyed Bastard and Goodnight Adaline.

ever since they released the trilogy, they keep going for this garage-rock sound that doesnt have the intensity of earlier albums. the guitars always seem a little tingy and the drums arent smacking as hard. i dont understand this direction, it makes all of the songs suffer a little bit.

Tbh the trilogy, Revolution radio, 21cb are great. 21 cb is actally better than saviours. The trilogy has a lot of memorable parts. Like 90 percent. I eould say saviours is 100 percent better than foamf though. Trilogy had a great sound for production. The lyrics for Bobby sox are really personal to hos veiw in acceptabce of dating who you want to.

Post American Idiot album I feel Green Day came out with some great albums, primarily being 21st Century Breakdown. That's an amazing album! Revolution Radio, comes after that in my opinion. Trilogy is next, some songs are great and some of them could have gone through some quality control. Father of all had some nice songs but it was not memorable. Saviors is genuinely a comeback and although there are 3-4 songs that I don't like that much but it's still better than Father of All and the Trilogy.

Idk why but it kinda feels inspired by Nirvana, like there's more screaming in their songs, they suddenly decide to rip a song off, it's more guitar driven and shit.

Green Day has been my favorite band and biggest inspiration when it comes to music. This album to me so far has been meh. I mostly hear a rehashing of what they've done before, and lyrically it's a weak and formulaic. I still believe that Dilemma is the best song on the album and the subject matter is really good. As a musician I feel like this is a love song to the bands they have been listening to or grew up with. It almost feels like they lost the, "eye of the tiger" and life is too good to have anything to write about. I don't hear a lot of Green Day on this album. Notable tracks for me: Dilemma, Good Night Adeline, Father to Son (didn't pay off, but still decent, chorus too repetitive), Fancy sauce, strange days. I absolutely hate Suzie Chapstick with a passion. It sounds like Green Day is covering a Cardigans song. I'll keep listening and see what grows on me but I was hoping for more Green Day.

Revolution Radio is better than 21st Century Breakdown and it's not even close. Sorry but I'll take a conventional collection of rock songs that succede at being fun and/or tugging at the heart strings, over an ambitious yet kinda bland rock opera any day.

Sorry. Father of All is the worst album released by a major artist - ever. Saviors puts them back in a better position, but its an obvious attempt to recapture their glory days. They've stopped evolving, and the new album could have easily have come after Warning in their catalog. Sounds redundant, but its not a sh*tty pop sandwich like Father of All....

A few of the songs are quite good but the preachy sanctimonious messaging about the evils of the American Dream, capitalism, and over the top establishment wokeism gets very tedious.
