(Click 2:43 for shortcut to Clogging) This was the individual "freestyle clogging" exhibition by the Green Grass Cloggers with old time string band music by Strictly Strings from Boone, North Carolina. This was entertainment-only included in the Dance Competition hour at the end of the day.

I'd like to share this very informative comment recently (July 2018) posted by one of the Green Grass Cloggers (lady in red t-shirt) from Asheville, North Carolina. (jlw37663)

Just to provide a bit more info: Clogging/Flatfooting is considered a dance that was created in the Appalachian Mountains and was influenced by styles of the Native Americans, Africans, Irish, Scottish, and Brits. Originally, people danced without taps on wooden porches to create rhythms as musicians played old-time tunes.
Green Grass Cloggers formed in 1971 out of East Carolina University and have performed around the world throughout the years. We now have a team in Asheville, NC and Greenville, NC, and perform separately and together. Typically we wear colorful costumes and tap shoes. This video was an informal freestyle line which allows dancers to showcase their own styling and steps.
Several asked about the change in dancers that happened on stage - because this was an informal thing, we were getting organized while being introduced. Not sure why the one dancer didn't return to the stage, but I promise that we all get along amazingly well!
If you'd like to learn more about or book the Green Grass Cloggers, go to our website:

If you are interested in lessons, I'd be happy to discuss possibilities. I'm wearing the red shirt. Here is my FB page:

"Strictly Strings" band is Kathleen Burnett, Willow Dillon, Anissa Burnett, Caleb Coatney, and Cecil Gurganus (Watauga JAM instructor and mentor). All these folks are from Watauga County, North Carolina which is also the location of Appalachian State University.

But it's different though and it also seems older and more authentic, maybe the Americans have been more successful in maintaining their traditions? As for Scots, it's all just English people in kilts and bagpipes for the tourists.

@@illegalsmirf well, your fiddle reel music will have it's origins in scotland. your clogdance will have it's origins in england or wales as they were the earlier settlers.

I’m from New Zealand. Listen to wide arrays of music but have rarely taken in performances of this Appalachian music. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Felt lighter as a result. No ego in any of this, just decent people embracing the joy of music and movement and through that spreading it around. Wonderful. Thanks for sharing 👍🙏

As we all get scattered around and melted culturally, it's good to remember the unique people we came from and our Irish, Scottish, and English roots. I'm English. There is a phenomenon in Northern England, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Stoke, Nottingham, called "Northern Soul" It's a love of American late 60's early 70's black soul music. It has integral dance steps that have an undoubtable resemblance to some of the steps that these brilliant dancers are demonstrating in their Blue Grass routines. Fantastic music, fantastic dancers. All music is connected. This is one branch of a phenomenon that connects us all. So glad that I've found Blue Grass.

One of the things that is very important in Irish dancing is keeping the upper body still. There is a song for kids which states that Irish dancers never smile ! Its all in the lower body, and obviously the faster you can move those feet the better the dancer you are.

I can't remember if he ever became world champion. I remember being surprised because I never knew we were into clogging back in the day. We had students in East Tennessee where we taught who were cloggers..it as part of their tradition. These people are not actually Irish but Scotch-Irish, families who came to the colonies in the 1700's, bringing their traditions from Scotland with them. They had often been resettled in northern Ireland y the British to try to keep Ireland in British hands, and these people were also all Protestant. This is my husband's family tradition.. Our students entered contests, loved the dancing, and teh developed square dancing that developed from this.....and many earned college scholarships..which brougth tehm out into the world. We took a group of kids to Chattanooga, who had never been more than their own county and the contiguous counties and were seniors in high school. They in tern brought the clogging to other areas for others to see. This was in teh 1990's.. Many of the mountain crafts and music have been maintained and I am very glad.

The 1790-1810 census for the Appalachians states the majority of settlers were English, followed by Scottish, some households state English and Scottish, 10 Welsh households, 8 German households, 1 French, no Irish, it would have been the English settlers who took clogging to the Appalachians.

Aye, and she put good use to her hands holding that dress, too. The rest seemed to not know what to do with their hands!

Nice! I learned from hearing family members talk about it, then seeing it at a revival somewhere in North Carolina. I started watching videos of it, and practicing it. The only thing I ever did see similar as a child was flatfoot dancing to measure the pressure in the thump keg.
