A most wonderful Christmas Ghost story. I know I tend to over-enthuse, but Green Holly by Elizabeth Bowen is, for me, one of the best ghost stories in English from the mid-20th Century.
Bowen removes ghosts from their history of clanking and scaring and contrasts them with the ordinary world or ordinary importance (the war effort in 1944) and suggests that our aspirations for romance and glamour are phantasms, which nevertheless we prefer to real life.
See what you think.
Elizabeth Bowen (1899 to 1973-Dublin). Bowen believed in ghosts and other strange things. Her stories about England during World War I. Bowen did not just sit back and watch the war. She was an air raid warden. When bombs fell, she walked her route to make sure people were in shelters and had turned off their lights. When she was writing her stories, it wasn't at all clear who would win the war. Bowen later said that she had never felt more alive than when the blitz was going on.

your post-tale ramblings are as enjoyable as the stories themselves. like the great disc jockeys of the late night in the sixties...those ghost-like beings, those disembodied voices haunted the darkness and befriended the lonely.

Oh Tony! You are a love! As i recover from a dangerous war with Covid and clots in my lungs....I won the war! I think??? or a holy ghost is writing you!!?? Ive been so out of it that I haven't listened for a couple of months. I so adore the reading of the Ghostly stories. I think this has to be my most favorite. Even more so, that I can relate to your after story of the author and of your thoughts of such! Yes! I too adore Christmas. My Christmas wish is that I one day meet you! I would sing my heart out.....just to hear and see you live! Happy Christmas to you, and your family. I too have read many bios on our 20's little "spit fire" with her bob cut. I'm back and grateful to be listening once again! I have many friends in Marin county that I have shared your tube with. We all love you ❤️ love from Yolanda the singer of South American music in Oakland, CA US of well, you know....... 🥰

Great job, both you and the author. The plotting was very original, not following the formulaic rules of the average ghost story. Truly original (and I’ve listened to virtually your entire catalog on RU-vid).

Thanks as always Tony, you spoil us for any other channel. This was so poignantly atmospheric. There they stew in their purgatory while others inhabit their own; feather boas and pearl studs don't make it any less eternal. I'm glad that you don't have to be the body snatcher so often now, putting on those wounded skins must get so tiring. Christmas in Australia can be its own ghost story. The still heat of a sweltering afternoon, silent except for the shrill of cicadas, the buzz of a trapped blowfly in the window. No smell of pudding spices, but a faint reek of prawn husks, and cold ham left in the sun. Not a soul stirring as the thermometer tops 38C...

Must admit, it's rarely that hot here in Tas. It's more likely to have a dusting of snow on th mountain at Christmas here. But I remember the hot Christmas's of my time on the big island. Where the whole tradition felt alien and inappropriate for this place.

I can borrow my mom’s puppy, EMMIE, she’s an ADORABLE 5lb. MIKI (a new breed & her first “familiar”, her first bonded animal & in her 70’s! EMMIE is a very good little pup-pup; she adores my mom! She enlightens our home life & gives my mom a “new baby/child” to care for, communicate with, & is a GREAT bridge to communicating/socializing with young kids (she is a retired teacher so she loves kids & I’ve chosen not to have kids to offer more life source to plants & animals), other dog owners, & our local haunts! She is amazing! And has taught me to interact with dogs more, since, traditionally, I’ve always been a solid cat person! Anyway, I didn’t quite connect with this story. It’s a bit vague & hard to grasp, the first time; I’ll have to listen again & see if it might make more sense to me tomorrow. This full moon has given me SERIOUSLY VIVID DREAMS! Very deep unconscious workouts & while exhausting & intense, I am grateful & enjoy the self discovery/unveiling of the archetypal components within the dream works! I wonder if others are also getting fed from the side of their deep sleep psyche? Anyone else? Tony, Brilliant as always! Much obliged. Love the festivities & decorations & presents & presence of the winter holiday spirits! Cheers! ☕️🫖🥠…🍷…🍾🥂❣️
