Yeah, he probably could talk about repairing his fridge and i'd still be interested in listening! He's good at telling stories and his art is top notch! I like to hear him talk about the tiny details we would not have noticed or enjoyed at the fullest!
I just logged in to echo that sentiment. You think we'd be bored by you talking about comics? Au contraire. For many of us this is the kind of video we love and appreciate. Some of us will get jaded by the petty dramas and roll our eyes at it when it takes up too much content, so something like this is a very welcome reprieve. You might underestimate how many viewers may crave more of this type of content. For me the explanation of the construction process and how you use symbolism and subtle subtext to connect with the reader is valuable content. Anyone who's of a creative bent looking to create their own stuff in the future, or anyone who simply appreciates art and finds it fascinating, will love this type of content. For me I'd even like to see the occasional longer form documentary type video dealing with this sort of content in the future. It may be true that you will get more clicks when creating different drama based content, but don't underestimate the value of quality too and how one perceives your channel as a whole.
EVS, You talking about comics is **NEVER** eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever boring, Brother. The passion in your voice, and your stories, is rarely more palpable. I love when you talk about this sort of content. I like it even more than the comedic gold you drop every day. By a country mile.
Yeah I agree with you on that. As I teenager I never got into comics because I was so overwhelmed with choice but one day I glanced at the stand and saw "Rage of the Red Lanterns" and I was hooked, so much so that I read as much green lantern as I could find, back issues, trade paperbacks, memorbilia. John's work on Green Lantern made me a huge fan of the character.
Love the commentary, Uncle. You've made a comic collector out of me over this past year. I almost feel ashamed that I neglected such an expressive medium for so long.
@One Step Too Far I think you're thinking of a different "Rebirth." Geoff Johns wrote a 6 comic "The Flash: Rebirth" story line a couple years back and EVS did the art for it. It's super confusing, I know, haha. But the cover art for Color of Fear is pretty awesome too!
@@smokebanshee9298 Haha, yeah, I know it's been quite a while. I was just too lazy to look up when it actually came out. I only read it a few years ago myself.
Kevin S. He had an awesome run on Superman too.. Not his Action Comics run, but Superman; before he ever started on GL.. Like Superman: Ending Battle, that was prob the main arc from that initial run.. Pretty much the same time he was writing JSA, which was another classic. He revived that team and turned it around just like he did with GL. Johns kills it on anything he touches
Green Lantern Rebirth was the book that got me back into comics and into DC. I've had the pleasure of meeting Ethan at various conventions and commissioning sketches. They're all quality works and I've loved shooting the breeze about comics, Twin Peaks, or getting my friends together to do a babershop quartet of CW McCall's Convoy for EVS amusement. Keep on creating!
Mr Van Sciver, Sir... the way you talk about your own work is beautifully analytical. It's like hearing an auteur director discuss his movie. I jumped onboard with your stuff from GL rebirth; the love you put into that book bleeds through on every page - God bless you for that! I've been following your channel for a while now, a sincere thank you for your resolve in the face of political correctness. May every pie that comes your way, be sufficiently baked, my disgustingly talented friend.
I totally didn't put 2+2 together. I used to cardboard and bag all of my comics. The ones who's covers really touched me in some way. Spiderman #1, Incredible Hulk #377. So many more. I wasn't a huge fan of a lot of D.C. Comics. But I would buy any title with a beautifully drawn cover. Now that I know you did beautiful work on Green Lantern. I have to go dig my collection out and check for your work. Such badass art. Keep up the great art and even greater fight against SJWs in comics and Sci-Fi. Thank you for your Insight.
Jeepers man, that art. Damn. Stunning stuff. I know you say nobody notices the details, but that's what makes it immersive, your brain notices it even if you don't, makes the world of the story more real.
More of this please. I know the drama videos and SW stuff gets the big views, and your live chats get all the laughs, but this kind of commentary thing and your portfolio critiques are fascinating and I miss them.
A pro artist reviewing what he did, what he was thinking, and what he was trying to achieve when he drew something? That is something that you can't put a price tag on.
1.) Ethan, I could listen to you all day brother. 2.) I know you probably don’t remember Ten years ago, we met and you signed a Green Lantern stamp that I had two years in a row. I also came out as a Republican/conservative Christian and aim to enter the comic book industry as a writer. I just wanted to thank you for your inspiration and sticking to your convictions. Hope to meet you again and work with you someday soon!
I don't mind you showing how you did and do comics. Green Lantern is my favorite DC hero. This was a very nice and amazing change of pace. I would love to see speedpaints of your work some time.
Ethan. You're artwork and more importantly your art style, is f'n fantastic! I really love it! Jim Lee, Jae Lee, Deodato Jr, Ryan Stegman, Ethan Van Sciver. Top 5!!
Incredibly detailed establishing shots are one of my favorite things about comics. The establishing shots in Akira are what drew me in for that series so I don't think that type of work goes as unappreciated as you think. Glad to see you talking about the *secrets* to your past work again Uncle E.
Dude, it's because of your comic carrer and content that I started following you here (Star Wars content is a bonus since I´m also a fan of that). You could start a section (perhaps in ALLCAPS channel) called "Memoires of a Comic Artist" or something like that
My local comic dealer tried to sell me some Mark Waid Captain America stuff and insisted that Waid was “one of the good guys.” I bought Flash and Green Lantern Rebirth and told him that I love EVS. His face = priceless!
You are just such a badass artist dude, prob been my fav DC artist since I first read Rebirth when I was like 12-13 Btw, I thought Flash Rebirth was better than GL ⚡️⚡️⚡️
The way that you describe the artwork I can really tell that your heart was on those pages . You had drawn them years ago but it seemed to me that you were transported back to the moment you put ink to page . It was nice hearing the actual artist describe their intent and thought process behind these wounderful and historical pages . Thanks for the treat EVS .
What you and Geoff Johns did to Green Lantern was incredible. Not since Alan Moore, Steve Bissette and John Totleben’s Swamp Thing or hell Frank Miller’s Dark Knight has a DC character been so radically redefined, re-examined and reconstructed as Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. You guys enriched the character and his mythos and you did it not by throwing everything away like some creators did back in the day but by keeping everything and adding more to it to put things in a completely new and improved context. There was a reason and a purpose for everything. Not many comic creators can do that.
I wasn't really into comics before, but when New 52 was in the news, I decided to give GL a go. I loved Kyle Rayner and was really interested in the stuff in New Guardians, so I picked up GL Rebirth and read Geoff's run and... wow, loved it. Ended up getting Justice League and tried other comics, but I mostly just stuck with Lantern books. Taking a break at the moment from comics, but I really loved this run. Thank you for your part in the making of such a wonderful story, your art is great!
One of THE best comic runs in history, you and Geoff clicked and it was straight dynamite. I am currently reading it ( finished the second 1100 page omnibus) and this comic not only made me fall head over heels for green lantern, but since then I have read a lot more D.C. comics including plenty of Geoff johns. My only complaint is you didn't draw as many issues as I'd hoped, still can't believe they didn't give you the job as the number 1 inker for the run. 🐸👍🏼
There you go again, always inspiring me to draw. You actually draw heroic-looking characters...unlike today’s superheroes who sit around and eat meals together. I guess somebody’s got to protect the mall’s food court, too...
Gl rebirth is the greatest Hal Jordan story and art since the Neal Adams run ,blew my mind when it came out ,greatest sinestro art ever, always impressed on your light and shadows of your art style
Absolutely amazing show I know other fans may not enjoy this one Kalihi but listening to the artist explain the process everything going on in your life or the people involved wonderful wonderful broadcast. God bless you and thank you for sharing this with us.
Ethan, since I read your works in Green Lantern's rebirth when I was younger, I have been a really huge fan of GL. Now I'm reading Denny O' Neil GL/GA but I was very surprised when I realize that you make the art back then in rebirth. I love your drawing, it's one of the best I've ever seen. Great fan of your works and vids, Keep the good work! Btw, english is not my first language so I'm sorry for any grammar/spelling mistakes. Kudos from Venezuela!!!
You and Johns made Green Lantern great. I remember all the delicate symbols and the little touches you two added to the other Corp groups. Epic run. Hands down my favorite of any era.👏
I would wait 6 months more for a beautiful comic like yours than one that is rushed out and less detailed. This will be your masterwork...take your time and make it right.
I just bought this a few moments ago. I used to own the hardcovers, but lost every a few years ago. I'm blessed enough to have the opportunity to buy them again. They have three paperbacks collecting this thru Sinestro Corps War. I'm definitely going to grab all of those.
I love all your videos. But videos like these where you expand on your mind set, thought process, and expertise on these things. I love this video. Thanks for making it!
It was Green Lantern Rebirth that got me back into comics. I thought the story was the best in all of comics and the art was second to none. It was a pleasant surprise when I found out you were the artist of those amazing comics. It reinvented Green Lantern and created a whole new universe in DC Comics.
I remember reading Green Lantern Rebirth when it first came out and I was hooked! I still read that story from time to time. It was awesome to see Hal as a hero again.
Geoff Johns is my top Favorite Writer. Greatest! Green Lantern run was the Best read Ever! Loved your Artwork. I cant think of green lantern without your style in it.
I have the Absolute edition of Rebirth, fantastic!! Love your artwork EvS. Also, love this kind of video too, so interesting to hear about your own thoughts while you were creating it. Tfs, Katja
Re your 'circle' symbolism....reminds me of how Harvey Kurtzman drew everything, whether 'realistically' or not, with curving lines. He remarked that he never drew straight lines because he saw everything in 'lumps'....even his horizon lines were curved, in keeping with the curve of the Earth. Great minds thinking alike, etc.
I'm a major GL fan and Rebirth through Blackest Night is my favorite set of comics to read. I can't thank you and Geoff enough for how many hours of joy you have given me. Thanks Uncle E.
That looks like some amazing art, and it's not boring listening to you talk about it, hearing what was going through your head when you originally created it is fascinating.
It’s always great to hear an artist give some insight into their work and the creative process.I would like to see more videos like this in the future....I still have my original copy of Green Lantern Rebirth #1.Keep up the great work!!!!
This was, and still is, the most engaging and interesting type of content that got me hooked on your channel in the first place when it got started originally. It's a shame other content has pretty much supplanted these videos, though I do enjoy the other stuff a fair bit too. Having these pop up in the feed is always a pleasure to see.
This is amazing Uncle E. please give us more content like this. An incredible artist reviews his own art, it's totally a new and different perspective to comics for me. I always liked your Green Lantern stuff but when you explained like this now I'm totally going to re-read this comics again, thanks.
Love videos like this! Id love to hear more background commentary on comics youve made. After Cyberfrog comes out Id love a commentary track from you about a lot of the crafting process! Also yes, came to your channel for star wars, stayed for ComicsGate (though too late to support Cyberfrog)
I am so fascinated by comics and the work that goes behind it l could have listened to you talk about every panel of this book. Would love to see more of this kind of content.
This video was so cool! Thanks for posting I really enjoyed listening to the inside scoop of what happened and what your processes was when doing this.
Ever since I started watching the channel I've been digging through old green lantern comics at every comic store I've been to looking for EVS on the cover lol, now I can order some of your stuff.
you know i hope Geoff gets you involved into the GLC movie, the amount of worldbuilding, expanding and awesome storytelling that you guys have done is amazing and if Green Lantern is my favourite superhero, it's thanks to you, Geoff and the others involved. By the way, you breaking down your comics (or comics that you like or dislike to show us details that we might miss as more casual readers) is so interesting, do it more often, not as reviews but as actual breakdowns, page by page of the artwork and the storytelling.
This was really fun to watch. Love all the insights into the making of a comic, especially since GL is one of my fave franchises ever. Thanks EVS #HailCaesar
We demand you do a series where you go page to page and panel to panel covering this trade. I loved when you did the directors cut of your comics. We need more videos like this and this new trade is perfect for it. Do it EVS, do it now!
I definitely want to check out your previous work, especially since I missed out on the Cyberfrog crowdfunding venture. Thanks for putting this up. I'll see if I can order this one day on Amazon's kindle service since I read my comics digitally most of the time.
I grew up on Marvel and only dabbled with DC. That all changed with the Johns/EVS G.L. reboot. His writing and your interpretation and art are one of the greatest comics collaborations of all time. You made me love Green Lantern and even Sinestro: Sinestro War, Rebirth... simply amazing!
