In 1963-65 I was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge (CVS-33) that frequently moored at the carrier piers at NAS North Island on Coronado Island. Our air squadrons were based at NAS Miramar, which was then Navy and the home of Top Gun School. We spent many nights in San Diego and always went to the Mexican Village restaurant on Orange Avenue in Coronado for drinks and dinner which afforded the opportunity for us bachelor officers to meet and greet eligible young women who were also there to meet young eligible officers. After our 1965 marriage, we've lived all over the US (Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Columbus, etc.) but when I retired several years ago, we decided to return to San Diego to live in this marvelous community for the rest of our lives. We loved San Diego in 1965 when we were dating and we love it now ... sure, it's become more congested and expensive, but what other attractive place in the USA has not. To us it was.. and is ... that best place in America in which to live!!!!

I was 2 years old when this was filmed. I’ve lived in San Diego all my life. The thing that amazes me the most watching this, is how few cars and people there are. It’s so overcrowded now. I wish we could go back in time too.

San Diego is very overcrowded now. It was fine until the early 2000s. Same with the rent prices. People are also miserable(and rude) now becuase they struggle so much to pay their rents.

@Logia dude Were you here pre 1983? i was and it was awesome! I remember as kid going to the Silver strand on the Fourth. we would leave the house near sunset, find a parking place and watch the fireworks. Try that now, there is zero parking by 9AM.

Name one popular city that's not overcrowded? SD was a hidden gem for a long time. Been going there for almost 40 years, its our home away from home.

California was magical back then, started going bad about the mid 80s.

I’d give anything to go back to those days. Low population, no traffic, everything from food to houses was affordable. We had a yearly pass to the zoo and Sea World. Went to movies 2 or 3 times a week. We’d bring snow back from Julian and have snowball fights on the beach. San Diego was a heavenly place to grow up. I’m so grateful for my memories. Thank you for this marvelous look back!

In 1965 I was stationed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego attending Electronics School. I have visited San Diego many times since then and can say that the downtown area has almost completely changed. Point Loma looks mostly the same except there are so many more graves in the National Cemetery. On weekends I would hang out at Mission Beach checking out all the fine California chicks. I miss those days of my youth. Now I am 72 living in Kentucky. Time passes so quickly.

Wow so you were only 19 years old. What were you driving back then? Where else did you guys like to hang out? Who was the biggest celebrities at the time?
@Dr.Pepper001
@Dr.Pepper001 5 лет назад
@@bearbriganti5203 --- I did not get my first car until I returned from 13 months on the Pacific island of Okinawa. I was 20 and bought an Oldsmobile with a humongous V8 engine. In San Diego we humped most places or took the bus. We used to hang out at the zoo, the YMCA (dances on Friday nights), and of course the beaches. On paydays some guys would take the ferry to Coronado. Restaurants were nice but expensive. Well, of course there was Tijuana. Ay caramba. Not my favorite place to hang out, but I could at least have a couple of beers. I was too young to drink in California. I had to study a lot while in Electronics School. Not far from outside the back gate of MCRD was an I-HOP. A couple of buddies and I would work on homework and tackle some great pancakes. We called I-HOP our "office." The Beatles had a concert in San Diego but I didn't go -- too many screaming girls would be there. I recall that Jerry Lee Lewis played at the downtown Convention Center. I wanted to go but got stuck on base working "mess duty." Other celebrities during that time -- ones that performed in San Diego -- were Fats Domino, Ricky Nelson, the Rolling Stones (I heard that barely 300 attended their San Diego concert), the Turtles, and the Byrd's. Two movies were released and I saw them both at the Point Loma Theater -- _Goldfnger_ with Sean Connery and _The Sound of Music_ which became my favorite movie of all time. Ah, those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end.

I've lived in San Diego, since 1993 and it was still a very relaxing city. I'm 26 and sometimes I wish I could travel back in time only to experience San Diego back in the day. I love learning about this cities history, I really like to know where it is I live.

I was having fun identifying the ships. I saw a Albany class heavy guided missile cruiser, a Galveston class light guided missile cruiser, a Leahy class guided missile frigate and a Midway class aircraft carrier.

In 65, San Diego was still affordable to live. Would have loved to see it in those days. Now, it is almost the opposite of what it was.

You can 💯 blame the homeless situation on the dam liberals, and the higher rents, the city council treats the homeless bums better than our citizens!!

@@briangarza7532 Jesus Christ was homeless for 3 and a half years. Got compassion? ❤️
@briangarza7532
@briangarza7532 2 года назад
@@briankay4229 Big difference, today many opportunities to succeed, there is a difference between (homeless & bums) bums don't want help they just want hand outs!! and government to feel sorry for them, homeless are people who get off their feet and do something about it, they may need assistance from the government, but very temporary until they back on their feet..it's called resilience, something bums do not have, or do not want, if the liberals continue their give aways the problems will get worse, and that is what is happening now. You must understand this, I have interviewed lots of homeless people, and they tell me why should they work when government is giving out hand outs, they also said they do not want responsibilities. I have great compassion for these people, but I God says to his people!!! Go out and be prosperous, live good. So do not assume that I have no compassion.
