I remember a story from a bull breeder my family bought from in Northern Alberta. He was also into the regenerative management and up north we have to get really creative in the winter sometimes. He would swath graze on the snow and the cattle would also rely on snow for water yes we can do that this far north. At one point in February with the cold temperatures the snow was getting too crusted for the cattle to forage through so he took an old field cultivator( depreciated already paid for) hooked it to the tractor to break up crusted snow. The ground is so frozen and the snow is deep so you dont have to worry about breaking through soil and this was a once in a blue moon thing but it still turned the neighbors heads. While we appreciate that iron is contrary to the principles of regenerative management sometimes keeping an old depreciated implement of some kind might come in handy once every five winters.

Our cattle didn't spend one night under a roof, and they came through looking real good. Still waiting for warm weather, it is snowing again today. Thanks and have a wonderful day.

You have a lot to be proud of with your herd of cattle Greg. It is very evident you have spent many many years of hard work, land / pasture management, being very selective of the breeding stock you keep to produce the best cattle with nice temperaments you possibly can all on grass. I miss sitting in the field or walking among cattle listening to them rip and chew grass as I did growing up in the 60’s & 70’s with my Dad’s and my herds. Ours were pretty calm and docile as well because Dad had strict rules of culling much as you have. If mean, high headed, consistently uncooperative, fence jumper or destroyer, bad mother, and etc. went to freezer camp. Rules applied to all but one very nice bull that would jump or walk through fences for fun. Dad finally got tired of it, put 1 more hot wire up above the perimeter field fence at 5.5 feet and put the ground rods for the hot wires down the well below the water line. When the bull touched and tested the hot wire he got a huge jolt that buckled his knees. He quickly gained fence respect, decided he liked the areas where he was put just fine after that and never jumped or walked through another fence. lol..

Frogs just started singing last night here in Michigan. Inoculated my first mushroom logs last night\this morning. Hope I did it right! I guess we'll see in the fall or next spring... Hope to start the cows grazing real soon. You're my model.

What a beautiful setting! I can watch those animals graze and listen to your in the background. It just relaxes me tremendously. I never get tired of these videos. I'd be interested to know what the guys were thinking with that second fence too. When are you going to introduce Ike? That Tennesse ranch is beautiful and after your management for a year it will be stunningly so.

Hello mr Judy clearing a dairy farm that has been sitting for 40 years all dead+wood and fungi on the ground. I have seen white clover creeping Charlie and some grass but not enough for me to tell what it is. Should I give it a sebatacle of get some sheep in there? Rotating 30 hens on it right now to scratch and fertilize. Again thank you for all the education and advice it is greatly appreciated.

Can you please talk about how the type of grass, quality of grass,season of slaughter etc effects the tast of beef? Does the breed change the flavor? I split a large steer with a friend. The steer was 1300 lbs or more before slaughter, I forgot the hanging weight. The meat isn't soft and succulent. The grass smell and taste is so strong that the hamburger taste like eating out of a yard waste recycling bin with weeds. The hamburger has that smell so strong that thw whole kitchen smells like that. This cow was from sonoma county CA and harvested in February or March which is the end of the very wet rain season here. We get often get 30 inches of rain in just a couple months and it's bone dry 7 to 8 months of the year.

Awww first calf! ❤️. Grass looks like the remnant of dry stockpile turned itself green! QUESTION for Jan for Q&A if that’s OK. Would you ever consider running a few Japanese Browns or other Wagyu heifers amongst the mob. Or JB/W AI a few of your own cows? If not, have you sold SP heifers to a regenerative cattle rancher who has?

How much stockpile in terms of months do you need for winter and spring? And how many days of pure hay or how much hay per head for a winter and spring?

Milk herd been out for two weeks here in north of England …. I was surprised but they generally seem to have plenty grazing so I presume they know what they are doing, my horses are still restricted to tracks and hay….but I do not have as many acres

Sounds weird but I like to smell my cattles breath. Reminds me of a fresh cut hay field. Walking through the herd you get a whiff once in a while.

It was good to hear why calves are born dead. Reason why, is that I tagged calves for a rancher who ended up with piles of dead calves from first time heifers. They pulled them out year after year, making these pile. This was when bigger bulls were "better," so that puts two and two together and answers the question that's been whirling around all these years. I am now a green hobby farmer with 10 cows, never pulled one yet in 16 years. And a pasture we rent has a Gelbvieh bull that makes great calves, without loosing one. Today, I can only imagine how much money was lost to that rancher. You said it, some ranchers stick with what they know and lose money, and sometimes big money because of their attitude. Maybe one day they will see the error of their ways, we can only hope.

Spring has sprung for your pleasure …nice it makes me think that I should go out and look at my garden again. I have sometime to wait for the perennials as yesterday my daffodils and other flowers were just starting to send up a few green shoots and there is something growing in the raised garden bed that I made I had better get out there and do some real gardening not just talk the talk . Yesterday I thought that the Tennessee ranch looked like a manicured estate I admired the scenery I certainly will like to see the changes over the next two years I bet there will be a lot of earthworms working on the land improvement team. I wondered how long it would take the herd to do the whole rotation and get back to the starting point. It must be a pleasure to work with a landowner who is open to change . I'm not real sure how you don't just take a chair out to the pasture and sit there for a few hours. I think you have such high grass because you keep some overwinter. My yard is only 2 inches high. Sometimes border collie pups can be shy with larger animals like cattle especially when they are young. If he is supposed to be a working dog Issac needs to build the pups confidence.

this video came at just the right time because I was about to start hit that new grow coming out without a lot of stock pile. I have a little hay left so I am going to hold them back and keep them up for a little longer so I can try to start off on the right track this year.

I was talking ranching with a neighbor and he was telling me how much he misses the cow smell I was thinking to myself all that smell from what I understand is the nutrients in the atmosphere and trying to explain to them that ruminant animals don't eat grain they looked around me like I was from Mars I kid you not Greg.
