"it really would be better to idolize a fake god than a real man" Only if you insist that your idols have to be perfect, which I think is religious mindset in the first place. You can have respect and adoration for a person, even consider them a role model, but still realize that they have flaws and patterns of behavior to be avoided. In case of idols in your profession or hobby, you can even strive to supersede them. You can't do the same with a god that's "perfect" by definition. That's actually a point where polytheists come out ahead because their gods are flawed just like people, while religions and cults with model founders manage to combine the worst of both worlds.
