I think I recall several years ago that researchers studied the composition of the pyramid stones and found them to have unusually high water content for supposedly being solid blocks carved as whole segments compared to the quarry they originated from, and along with a few other properties they concluded the stones were formed via an ancient concrete process. Breaking them down into tiny bits and reforming them with massive molds hundreds of miles away is a lot easier and makes more sense than cutting and transporting entire 2.5-ton blocks.

There's even a term for them: _lithophones._ One of the neater examples was a kind of 'lithophone organ'. Someone took a cliffside showing geological layers of different kinds of stone, then methodically chiseled the layers into distinct 'shelves': each 'shelf' would produce a different tone when you ran a hand-sized stone across the top, due to its shape and the specific resonant qualities of that rock layer.
