Best GKB memory was meeting him backstage when he opened for Tom Johnston (and bunch of Doobies as guests) and Pablo Cruise at Summer on the Green in Santa Cruz. Had beer with Greg Kihn (I was 17) and worked up courage to tell him that our band covered one of his songs (this one). He took sip of beer, smiled and said 'Well, I guess I've hit the big time' and then hung out with us for the rest of the show. Little thing to him. Huge thing even years later to me. Original GKB fan for life
So here’s my Greg Khin story he was just beginning and they played a little club in Santa Cruz called the catalyst my friend and I decided to go see him. There was nowhere to sit, but there was a table upstairs. It was reserved. We decided we would sit there until they kick us out and then we just go down and stand on the floor like everybody else. Well to our surprise no one did and there was this woman wearing NBC jacket and a couple of other people one of them turned out to be Joe Satriani‘s mother. They never told us to move. We sat there with with them and watched. The whole concert is still a memory. I remember to this day
Man, this getting older really sucks ass. All of our musical heroes are leaving us. :( If there's any way possible, I hope that Greg knows that he was loved and will truly be missed. His passing caught me so off guard. I guess that I was taking life for granted. It was kinda the same way that I felt when Eddie Mahoney (Money) passed, but almost everybody knew that he was sick. It's just the finality of it all. It's a bitch. I'm so glad that we all had the opportunity to be around, listen to, and appreciate these guys while they were all up and coming, made it big, and beyond. Thanks for sharing the ride with me. God bless you all.
He was a gunslinger. His licks and that Vox 12-string GK plays made their sound unique. The lick Dave plays on Madison Avenue is what first caught my attention. Then I heard the Buddy Holly tune "You know love's made a fool of you". I was hooked.
Saw Greg Kihn Band in San Jose in 83 ( may have been 82). Really good, don't remember much, some dude sold me a joint in the bathroom and i got fucked up out of my mind. But it was really good.
davedzone sounds like a good time. I’m hearing this song for the first time today and it feels so real to me. Music like this moves people and it should be appreciated through generations of time
Drove from Aptos to Monterey to see him in '82~ with a A Sweet Lady friend~ we woulda drove to LA then~ it was epic~ and he sounded remarkable~ Great mems of those halcyon days~
i saw him then too, it was '82 at the Placer County Fair. it was so great, this song in particular has always been my favorite. and i read his book Horror Show every Halloween :)

Totally agree about the GKB sound, thomasbcool. I guess we're kihndred spirits. Strange that only in a distant city are people able to articulate the same things I have always thought. By the way..thanks for the reference to the album "Greg Kihn again". That album captivated me to no end for many years, something about the sunny tight sound and vocals, and chiming melodic guitar parts. Every song is a standout on that album! Especially hurt so bad...
The first CD I ever made many years ago from vinyl was my own GKs greatest hits. Had all the hot ones. People would always comment, 'who is this, this is great'. Alas, these days no one has a turntable. Mine sits next to my PC connected to a Yamaha power amp. Of the uploads, this one is the most popular.
Saw Greg in Sacramento, Ca. in the early 80s. His band was great!!! A band called city kid was the warm-up ( nowTesla band ) it was in a small bar called Oasis 2000. What a super show
Greg Douglass did play with Greg for a short time, but in this video, that's Dave Carpender, his original (almost) guitarist. Dave was a monster and a totally hilarious stage presence with the heart of an angel, unfortunately that heart finally gave out a few years back....
Saw TGKB at the Trading Post Saloon in Missoula, MT in the 80's. He was cool enough to sit down and talk to us at the bar during the break, very accessible and personable. Still a huge fan, and this is one of his best songs. And I dig the crazy Vox 12 string!
You can catch him on the internet on his morning show. He's written a few books and still performs with his son playing lead. They have a yearly affair called the Kihncert with notable guests.
hey i just seen GKB last night 5/19/12 in Santa Cruz, Ca,, with specials guests Steve Wright (bass), Larry Lynch (drums).. his son Ryan Kihn kicks azz on the guitar,, awesome perfomance
"Now I think I'm going down to the well tonight and I'm going to drink till I get my fill And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it but I probably will" Glory Days
I'm pretty sure it's '81. The store had a satellite dish and we discovered MTV. I set the VHS recorder and left that night. Pleasant surprise the next morning. It'a at a place called The Country Club.
This is completely awesome! GKB was one of the Bay Area club highlights in the early 80's. I remember my friends and me not getting tickets at the Keystone Palo Alto and setting up ouside the front door with lawn chairs to hear the band. And Greg was extremely cool and genuine in person, unlike other bands who confused club-god status with Rock Star status (Bay Area Clubbies remember The Kids, or Hush, or 415).
Dr. One can make the case that Dave Carpender was the "original" guitarist of the Greg Kihn Band. Yes, Robbie Dunbar (Earth Quake) played lead on the first album, but I don't think the actual live/touring band was set at that point. Of few life's regrets is not knowing that Dave was living less than an hour from me in the foothills.... and tearing it up at the local bars..... until I heard news of his passing...
@lilithswnn Not much too it I now realize, just 8 lyric lines..this is what I hear. "Unlucky at love and life I'm beaten at every game I can't afford to be right I go on ahead just the same I don't want no reputations Cause reputations are cheap I don't want no hesitations Mistakes I got to repeat...over and over."
yes, thanks thomas.!! gracias thomas.!! vilen danke thomas das video ist excelent!!!!! gute video und rare video porfavor sigue poniendo videos asi para los fans.gracias thomas
Greg Douglass totally awesome guitarist. Saw him many times live. Story he tells about writing Jungle Love with Lonnie Turner (the bass player from SMB) is pretty funny if you can find it
I had a friend there too. Said it was great and loud. l saw the Breakup video. Larry was nice enough to send me a pre-show photo of GK and GD posing together. You were one of the ones dac.
this greg kihn guy is our radio host guy here in the crap hole of the dalles, or. how did this happen 1877 (or 1-888 cant remember) -711-rock if you wanna talk to him yourself. i had no idea this guy was that famous
@PrimaDonnaBass I have a Tempest XII which is closer to a typical fender look. He could not have switched because of the neck. I think it was for the consistent tuning of the metal E-fret at the top. I conversed with him once. He has 2 Phantoms. I could have spent $50 more and got a Phantom. Kicking myself now.
and also GKB played,, drum roll please,,, L-R-L-R-L-R-L-R-L-R-L-R, "train kept a rollin" by Aerosmith and stones,,"jumpin jack flash",,, awesome set,, again Greg's son Ryan shreds on the effing guitar,, amazing
Con placer! Compre este album en 1986, y el cd es muy raro. Eres un fan de un pais hispanohablante? Soy de Vancouver y es super de encontrar gente de todo el mundo con los mismos aficiones musicales.
