It's my miracle song. I suffered a miscarriage on Christmas Eve. At the hospital they confirmed this and scheduled a d&c for later that morning. I was set up to start the procedure when the doctor examining me said "you're still pregnant!" Say what? I guess it was twins and only one died. The other was born on7/4/86!

When I was 16 years old, in 1983, I sat in my car and listened to this song and cried. I had grown up, childhood was gone, the fairytales and promises had all been broken, but I was hopeful too. Very typical of Gen X, we grew up fast and saw through the lies early on, and this song summed it all up for me.... and I still remain hopeful all these years later. Merry Christmas everyone. This is simply a track of pure beauty. In 1975, when I was eleven years old I announced to my Mum and Dad, sadly no longer with me, that this would always be my favourite Christmas song. And for once in my life, I was right. 46 years later, it still is. I don't mind admitting that the beauty of Greg's performance and the memories this evokes, never fails to bring a tear.

In my humble opinion this is the greatest Christmas song ever written. It stands head and shoulders above all else. I'm a huge ELP fan and was lucky enough to see them live a couple of times. His voice was as good live as the recorded version. RIP Greg Lake, you had the voice of an angel.

The line "All anguish, pain and sadness.Leave your heart and let your road be clear" gets me every time. Isn't that what is really important in life? No how many presents you may get at Christmas, not material things. Having a life with less stress and more happiness is everything. Still the best Christmas song and a memory of childhood Christmases from the 70's and 80's.

to Greg Lake I am 60 yrs old and as a sound man of 15 yrs - a listener of this song since maybe '77 - I must say Bravo this is the Christmas song of our times . it may not have been intended in the beginning but You Sir , created something very special and shared it with all of us and that is something that all musicians strive to do but some achieve this goal to the highest of standards - and that shows in this song !! I was at a Christmas concert once long ago and a middle school girl who looked very mousy and introverted who soloed this song with the choir backing up the chorus parts and she sang like an angel and she nailed it big time. I was 11 when this was released. A new young teacher at school gave an assembly using this record. With the hall in near darkness except for the christmas tree lights, this played as we filed in. I had never heard anything so cool before. Brings a tear all these years later. Thank you Mr Baker hope youre safe and well wherever you are. Will forever remember your assembly that dark winter morning, and its message. The christmas we get we deserve.

Honestly, I guess my story is a bit messy compared to the ones I have read here BUT: I was 12 years old and my Dad was working on a 1976 Monte’ Carlo. I “Borrowed” it on Christmas Eve Morning 1983…….. and drove around for awhile smoking cigarettes and being “cool”. It was raining that day and I I was sitting at a stop light crying my eyes out listening to THIS song. I am now 52 and still cry to this song. Merry Christmas and May God Bless ALL OF YOU AND YOURS. Chris, I was a 20 year old United States Marine back in 1975, when this was a hit. My Mom and Dad were still living too. They died in 2002 Mom and Dad 2003, I really miss them. Sometimes Christmas season can be tough.

Absolutely, a gentleman. Writing a song, - "lucky man" at age 13. I forgot what year they used it, I think 72 or 73. I could be wrong but it was played when my husband and I saw elp live at soldier's field in Chicago and they had a full orchestra with them. It was more than remarkable, they blew everyone away.

I think that is the magic of the song. It takes you back in time to our younger days when friends and relatives were all alive and happy. Sadly these times are gone but the song and memories live on as will this fantastic song.

General Comment "I Believe In FatherChristmas" is a song by Greg Lake (most famously a member of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer), with lyrics by Peter Sinfield. Although it is often categorised as a Christmas song this was not Lake's intention. Lake claims to have written the song in protest at the commercialisation of Christmas.

I think you get the idea simply by listening to the lyrics anyway. It wasn't the only track where Lake sings of the folly of man, religion and so forth, but it is one of those songs that rings true no matter when you play it and being such a popular song of its day manages to remind all of us of the meaning of Christmas and, above all, what it doesn't mean. It's also a damn fine song!

Surely though, as a protest song about the commercialisation of Christmas, that still means it's about Christmas so it is a Christmas song, just from a different perspective to most others.

While Christmas is the most wonderful time of year for many I'm always stuck in its awkward bittersweetness. It sparkles red, green, silver and gold but never feels put together right. It sings with glorious harmony and jolly vibrato but is missing a verse. It gathers people together but there's never enough warmth. I first heard this song about 15 years ago. It came on in the car on a rainy December night. I had to pull over because it was so damn perfect. The loss of childhood magic. The anger of deceit. The acceptance of indifference you're left with. Hope for the best and get what you give. Peace and love, friends.

This is a great comment, I relate to it entirely. I think Greg is touching upon a feeling many of us have around Christmas, that it's very bittersweet. It has so much promise but usually falls short and leaves you feeling sad at some point. I've wondered about this ever since I was a teenager and started to find Christmas depressing, but could never quite figure out why. Thanks for sharing.

You seem to be one of the few people in this thread who can actually grasp the true meaning of this song - plus Oli & Kate. As children we were taught (or conditioned?) about the beauty and joy of the holiday season...but the reality is that, unless we just want to look away, for each one of us who has plenty of food, wine, gifts, etc, there are 2 people out there enduring a life of disappointments and suffering. We are so lucky to have it all, yet we are simply not grateful. We are so spoiled - I really wish we could really come together and learn more about the gift of sharing, caring and loving deeply and unconditionally. Peace to everyone and with everyone.

Thank you for actually "getting it". Most people miss the actual meaning of the song, similar to the people who think Springsteen's Born In The USA is a patriotic anthem. Unfortunately, this is the single version, not the version from Works Vol 2, which is much less overblown, more poignant, and more fitting with the message of the piece. Given the entire tenor of the song (and especially the final couplet), the single's triumphant ending fanfare is counter to the entire meaning of the song.
