Maddux never seemed like an outgoing guy, but he thoroughly answers any question posed to him.

I miss him and Randy Johnson. Those guys in their prime were so fun to watch.

There has never been a better pitcher walk the face of this earth the last 50 years if not longer. His complete book of work is staggering.

I played with the Braves organization (minor leagues obviously) in 2003 and 2004. A few guys that worked out with the big league camp during spring training recall using the bullpen mound after Maddux. His landing area looked like one cleat mark. In other words his lead leg landed in exactly the same spot every pitch. Amazing. Talk about perfect mechanics.

He tried going back to work as a house painter after his career. He was fired after the first day after only painting the corners

GOAT pitcher. Just my take as a guy who made it a rule to watch him as much as possible. If a manager could choose from all the greats to have pitch in that game 7, then he's the one. "Movement . . . location . . . change speeds more important than velocity." That's what you learned watching him. BTW, love the love for him here in the comments section. Not surprising because he was as humble and soft spoken as he was great. What a combo.

You get the sense that if Maddux hadn't been a great pitcher, he could have been a good serial killer. He has that personality.

One thing people don't remember was that Maddux was an incredible defensive player.

One of my favorite pitchers to watch in the game except when they played the Mets. That rotation they had with him, Smoltz and Glavine in the 90’s was undeniably Hall of Fame material.

I’d loved what he said about fielding and how he had to get a few outs himself because of the type of pitcher he was. The smartest pitcher ever.

In 1998, my wife bought me an official MLB Maddux jersey. I hung it up in the closet. She was upset that I only wore it once a year for years. She thought I didn't like it. He is in the Hall of Fame and the shirt is a nice piece of baseball memorabilia for me. Loved watching him pitch.

Pitching has changed so much over the years. Teams used to have 7 pitchers on their roster. 4 opener rotation, two RP's and 1 closer. Nowadays 1 game will have 7 pitchers.

This was a GREAT interview - serial killer - really?. Greg Maddux is a real person. And the best pitcher to ever grip a baseball. We won't see anybody better in our collective lifetimes.

People always say "how could a guy with less physical conditioning have such a successful career?" It is all in his mechanics, he has the smoothest fluid motion when he pitches and the way he sticks his chest out is a way of loading up to use all of his bodyweight to throw the pitch. He never had a great fastball but man could he put them over the plate (on the corner, of course) with pinpoint accuracy. I'm a Cardinal fan and yes, I was jealous that the Cubs had him on his roster. He also kind of reminded me of Ferris Beuller. It'd be so aggravating to have your team play against him because you'd think "that wasn't a strike!" but it just barely touched the corner and he made a career out of his pitch command. Best baseball pitcher in my lifetime.

God I miss watching Maddux pitch. Watching him pitch taught me something, yeah I had a favorite team, but I loved watching every team play, because you could be watching a future legend, so take the time and enjoy watching every player on every team.

When you are not a Braves fan but you watch them because their damn pitcher was so bad ass. Yeah, that was me! Maddux was the shit!

With better run support in his career... Maddux could have won close to 400 games. I would have asked him if he knew he had 999 walks going into the last 3 starts of his career. Cool stat! Maddux is 1 of only 4 pitchers with 3,000 strikeouts and less than 1,000 walks. Fellow Cub Fergie Jenkins had 997 walks and 3K SO. Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez are the other two.

I'm glad I got to grow up watching guys like this, I'm glad I actually I got to see him start a game in person, and I'm really glad my Phillies lit him up. Lucky for my Phils he was in his last days. Best command ever.

Im a Phillies fan. Hate, hate, hated, the Atlanta Braves. They had almost every great pitcher, and almost as solid of a lineup every season. I couldnt stand them, or Greg Maddux. That being said, I respect the hell out of him. Everybody loves the sexy power pitchers, like Ryan, Johnson, Clemens, etc., but I love pitchers that had location and the ability to change speeds. Maddux looked so well balanced on the mound, and absolutely no waste in movement. The line about a guy having command of his pitches should have a picture of Greg Maddux next to it, because this guy knew where bis throws were going more than anybody ive ever seen. Awesome pitcher, and he would be on my dream team for sure. Gorgeous to watch.

I liked Maddux so much because I can imagine hitters facing him for the first time probably thinking "this guy looks like a banker, conservative haircut, looks like he should be in a suit carrying a briefcase" and then when they are putting their bats back they know they just faced an absolute master.

Got a little maddux in the making with my son. He has a weird drop on his 2 seam fastball, and has movement on a split finger fastball, doesnt throw all that hard at 10 years old, no curves, but has command and throws hardly any walks and gets a ton of ground balls. He has composure, and people make comments on him all the time that his composure is that of an 18 year old senior and he's 10 playing with 10 and 12 year olds on a travel team. I'm not the type of dad to get to excited with this stuff. I pitched, and I just teach him its all about strikes and command and composure. When his coach saw him pitch before the season in doors he slotted him in at the back of the rotation at about the 5th or 6th pitcher, by mid season, he was the Ace. More dads and coaches need to recognize its about teaching them first at an early age that its about command and composure and work in good mechanics, the heat will come later in life, but not always. Just work with what you got. Love having a hall of famer like this my son can look up to. When he see's other kids throwing heat and struggling to throw strikes or are get pounded, he understands why its happening to them. Its about learning the mental side of the mound, not the heat.

The extra 5" of outside plate made this guy famous. NL umpires called everything off of the outside a strike for the Braves' pitchers. Take this away and he was average.
