I was at the book signing at the Coronet Theatre. Scott played it cool on stage. Greg said “when’s the last time you saw Greg Walls?” Scott slyly replied, “let me guess, you’re Greg Walls.” But afterward in the signing line I did overhear Scott quietly exclaim in disbelief to Johnny Z, who was also there. Scott acted fine on stage, but in that moment following the program, I got the sense that Scott seemed either stunned or unsettled by Greg’s presence.

@@robertbirchfield5655 That’s his real hair. That was part of the deal with the devil. Scott was allowed to become a famous musician in a metal band, but would have to sacrifice his hair during his heydays in Anthrax and later on in his career would have to deal with being accused of stealing credit from Greg Walls in the beginnings of the band. Walls would have to walk away from the music business and turn in his talents in order to become successful on his own and keep his hair. The art of the deal.

The one thing you can't take away from Scott is, he's one of the tightest rhythm players in the biz. That being said, I have heard stories of people that met him and said he was kind of full of himself. I tend to lean on the side of Greg Walls. I also watched the video he did more recently where he showcased how he wrote 2 of Fistful's tracks. Seems pretty legit, as a guitar player and songwriter also.

@bobowrathsovine. 3 года назад
I've watched all the clips because I wanted to see if Scott Ian can play a single lead lick. Can't find one. He's been playing guitar since the 70's. 40 something years of playing guitar and there's people who haven't even been playing 1 year who can play circles around Scott
@Brandonmtlhd
@Brandonmtlhd 3 года назад
@@bobowrathsovine. Well tbf, Scott was never really a lead player. He was always the rhythm guy. There is one instance I can recall where he recorded a lead on a track. It was for Only and it was a fill between verse lines, extremely basic. One note played a few times and then pick scrape. I did however, just today come across a clip of the original lineup playing a song. It's on Greg Walls' channel. Scott did a tiny bit more lead work but Walls blew him away.

I love this guy. I watched his original rant about getting ripped off, and at first I was skeptical, but having 30 years of recovery in various 12 step programs, therapy, and 7 years of ACA, adult children of alcoholics, I can totally relate with everything he's saying, and how as a kid he was basically a doormat, and some entitled aggressive kid comes along, and does all these sneaky things behind his back like not keeping everybody up to speed with what's going on with Zazula. His trauma kept him from standing up for himself in anthrax, and kept him from being guitarist from Metallica which if he had more of Scott's ego he definitely would have become Metallica's guitarist, he got along with everybody and was the life of the party, I can totally relate.

This exact same thing happened to me. I was in a band me and some friends started, we didnt even have a name for the longest time. I wrote songs and practiced and helped out and tthe bass player would copy my guitar playing at one point he was playing my solos on his bass and i just left the band. I was starting a new job and felt like i didnt need the added stress. Then they get a new guitar player and record an album and its all my songs and the guy playing doesnt even sound right and no mention of me of course. I felt like how Greg says he felt here and this band never amounted to anything so for Anthrax to get big and you helped them get started and they just act like you didnt even exist that is pretty low and how much royaltys or however that works would Greg of made just by being credited? Like if for two songs the album had his name. Would he of made a lot of money???

I feel like Scott was put in situations where he had to make horrible decisions. I'm not saying he wasn't at fault for doing some underhanded shit but he definitely was savvy enough to be able to see a path and use good material when it was there. After meeting Metallica who were in the right place at the right time there must have been a sense of urgency to be on the same level. Every band has people who kinda fell by the wayside. I was in a band called 13 Crowds back in the late '80s and there were other members and they wrote one song. lol We (the new members) never wanted to to play the earlier "one song" of "material" because it sounded very ,"typical" and "hacky". Thing is if it wasn't so, everything I said, you can bet that we would have used it. We loved the Misfits, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedy's, The Meat Men, Agnostic Front, Bad Brains, Black Flag . We knew what good music sounded like and emulated what we heard and we didn't even know how to tune our instruments but we could hear and improvised. The other thing was that our singer would record us and we didn't know it. I listened to a lot of Metal and Industrial and all the stuff I mentioned very open to lots of influences. Later I found out our material was tape traded and even sold all over Western PA and Eastern OH and people knew who we were? So you see the thinking behind bands isn't always cohesive and especially if there is a lot at stake. There was nothing really at stake for us but there was a lot going on and we didn't always know about it. The founder of our band went on to have other other bands. Crowd 13, The Blackouts and Nobody's Hero and continued to use our material but eventually dropped a lot in favor of rerecording on a 4 track and using a drum machine. I always tried to be as supportive as I could even through bad blood with other members and drama and learned a lot about DIY music and production. My point is you never really know how things are going to go and you definitely don't always know what is going on behind the scenes.

Anthrax was not known for great musicianship, to me they seemed to be fooling around onstage, not very serious. I saw them in the day at L'Amour in Brooklyn, I wasn't impressed at all, even this guy was luke warm. This was at a time that amazing musicians grew on trees. But Anthrax did create something new, I didn't like it, and it never really sold a lot of records, but it a new cross pollination of musical styles. When the rap stuff came out, I tuned out completely. Metallica was a much better band, they sold 100x's the records. This guy was smart to go to school to get the hell out of the business, because they never made much money. For all his fame Scott Ian is worth about $5m, I made more than that and I didn't have to leave my shop. I build guitars, in '82 I was making $150k a year, these guys were broke. Very few musicians made a lot of money, they had no medical, none of them saved any money for retirement. Metallica's members are incredibly wealthy, but for every one of them, there's thousands of broke musicians. I'll bet Greg Walls is better off today than if he stayed in Anthrax.

@@HarryBuddhaPalm no. There is another video from 5 months ago where he's saying he's kept quiet about it long enough and he just has to get it off his chest. He started the band with Scott Ian. And Scott ripped off everything from him. He was the one in Anthrax that was recognized as the person in charge. He was responsible for hiring everyone in the band. He discovered everyone in the band. He was responsible for getting Metallica to New York and making sure they were taken care of. And all kinds of isht. He has his own channel. It's his most recent one on his channel. Go check it out.

@@noname-jr1vo I saw it. He said Scott asked him to join the band and it was already called Anthrax. He did say that he got Neil Turbin and some other guys to join the band because they needed real musicians. That's true. He did not say he formed the band, though.

Ian fronted the money for the band, so he took some writing credit. Sounds like Hesch in the sopranos ha. Maybe Johnny z, cause of dealing with mustaine and royalty stuff, just told the boys, Greg left, don’t give him any credit.

Going by what he says in this interview and what Scott says in his book it sounds like Scott wasn't that great of a guitar player in those days. I don't get how he became this super tight rhythm player if he never practiced cuz even if you're rehearsing alot with a band you still need to practice a lot on your own.
@ecatalan98
@ecatalan98 3 года назад
No guitar player starts out great. Everybody who starts out plays like shit. Period. If you have the drive, you start improving little by little, so Greg Walls probably met Scott when he was in his early stages as a guitarist. One thing is for certain: as rhythm guitar player, he’s UNTOUCHABLE. He may suck as a lead pleaser (reason why he doesn’t do any leads or does them very little). Only James Hetfield or Gary Holt could match Scott as a rhythm player (Hetfield is god… at least he used to be). There are many, many great metal and thrash rhythm guitar players, but Scott Ian is definitely one of them, so he must’ve “practiced” a lot to get to that level. Also, Charlie Benante is an awesome, accomplished player. He should do more playing on Anthrax albums!

@creepingthrash

eh, i wouldn't say so. it's different when you actually live the story instead of knowing about it through reading. it becomes a blur and facts get fuzzy. Greg might have known Dave was on his way out before he actually left and regretted not trying out. also when he says he hung out and gigged with Metallica for a year or two, that's a little off, i'm not sure when Greg left Anthrax but they were probably together around 6 months between spring and fall of 83. it's normal when going by memory especially as long ago as it was

This guy seems credible. Most of the the official stories concerning bands are just creations of their management companies. I find it hard to believe that Kirk was just waiting by the phone for their call. Arrangements had to be made and that takes time. In addition the Scott/Neal problems probably were over a girl. It is usually always over a girl.
