I'm 43, and I remember this song!! Making me feel very nostalgic. My older brother would play this, and I listened to everything he did. He was my hero..Unfortunately my Brother passed away at the age of 36 in 2005. Thank you for playing this.
Before becoming a musician Greg taught English at the University of Cal, Berkeley. He later went on to marry singer Freda Payne who had a big hit called Band Of Gold back in 1970. Greg’s mother pushed him to be a musician at a young age teaching him how to sing and play piano. After teaching he followed his dream and co wrote and song Shake You Down. I met Greg back in 1985 before this song was released he would frequent my restaurant on Staten Island by the SI Ferry. He live on SI because it was cheaper and easy to take the ferry to his Manhattan studio. I would continue seeing and talking to Greg for about 6 months before this song was released. He did tell me he signed with Columbia records and was about to release and album featuring Shake You Down. Once the album was released the song became an instant hit and I never saw or heard from him again!
I was around 17 when it came out, and it made every guy out there realize that they gotta up their game in the smooth department if they want to get anywhere with the ladies.
I remember this song when it came out (in I think 1986). I absolutely loved this song. I had the single, and I listened to it all the time along with Lionel Richie and Billy Ocean. Sure, I loved 80's hair metal, but there was something about that old school Soul/R&B that you felt every word. Man, those were the days!
This was Gregory Abbott's biggest hit! It was released in 1986 and was full of that sexy soulful vibe and was a huge hit! It had that sexy talk in the middle like many R&B songs of the era. I was a teen when it came out, however, this song is something I would listen to still today.
Ohh Yes this was my love Jam back in the day!!I was living in Nuremberg Germany in 1986.. he used to be married to Freda Payne..I loved her song ''Band of gold'' and Freda's sister was one of the Supremes..so fun how so many musical artist can interconnect with each other over 3 different decades 🙂
He had another Single but this was his "Biggest" Single. It went to Number One and he performed it not only on American Bandstand but All My Children as well.
I was 18 when this was out in 1986. I've still got the original 45 RPM record. If you listen to the old record you can hear where the background instrumental which was a continuous loop ended and started again. It barely perceptible but on the old recording you can hear it. I love all the little imperfections in the old stuff. I miss this smooth sound too.
I hear you, and cheers, never knew that. Prince was a legit genius, so you know, I guess hubris isn’t always rewarded. As far as this song here, guy had range. Does he have anything else? It’s a bit vanilla, but hook and bridge are nice.
I love this song & I so enjoy listening to all the oldies. Brings back alot of memories!!!! Thank you so much for the great entertainment. When I'm feeling down I listen to all these oldies but goodies lifts me up!!!!🤗😊
Abbott's parents were from Venezuela (mother) and Antigua (father). In college, he majored in psychology and minored in music and dramatic arts. He holds a Master's degree. He taught English at Univ. of CA at Berkeley before he decided to become a professional musician.
The song was released in 1987. Gregory Abbot was born and raised in Harlem. Professor Abbott was a college professor of English and Music at UC Berkeley and Stanford. He married R&B singer Freda Payne. He wrote this song for her and they had a child. I think he went back to teaching. He's about 70 or 80 now, he might be retired.
In the video they show a real harmonica being played, but the sound was actually generated by a Yamaha DX-7 synthesizer keyboard, just like in Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It".
Grade school 1987. 3rd and 4th grade. When music was good. Heard this one on the bus ride home and even when I went outside to play. The 80's were something.
This song come out in 1986. I hear this song all the time in my country Guyana because my family and other people next door use to play it all the time when they have party. And my family they still play it up to this day. And I love this song and I was born in the 80. That's 1980. And I'm 39 years old now.
This music video played a lot on MTV back in the 80s. The melody in the chorus reminds me of the chorus in "Cherish" from Kool & the Gang that I actually thought they sang it the first time I heard it.
Dude! This is out of late 80’s like 1987, which was heavy video era. Sound like he patterned his style similar to Freddie Jackson. The beat & groove to Jackson’s ‘You Are My Lady’ is similar. I recall it being basically an R&B hit that also got pop radio air play. Highly self produced, as he performed most of the instrumental parts on keyboards & drums. In fact I think I ended up playing on a recording in a home studio in Long Island, NY where Abbott did his tracks for that song.
I discovered this song 3 weeeks ago when i was in south Africa for my first time . As am from a french speaking country for English immersion. I was riding a hubber one sunday afternoon from my home to Sandton when this song came out from the radio. I lunched my shazam and here we are
This was 80’s and it was a jam back in the day and still is! Gregory Abbotts voice is amazing not to mention he’s great looking! I still have the cassette tape of this song from back in the 80’s but it’s pretty worn out!❤
I know this great ballad from the radio, when I was a technician and we played some 80s songs in our playlists. Pity he didn't have another success like this because he really has a great voice and charisma!
The model with the dreads was the 1st dreadlocked model to perform in a MTV video. This was super important because many people thought women with dreads were not attractive.
Oh yes I remember this quite well. 1986 my graduating year, if you were lucky back then you got a chance to get on the dance floor, slow dance sing or say "girl I been watching you" ask for her number, be sincere but still be cool! And if she turned you down at least you could have the DJ play *Robbie Neville's* song *C'est La Vie* (which I must add is a great song) and laugh at yourself, together or with all your friends. As always looking forward to your next reaction peace ☮️ and blessings!!
This was his one hit wonder... what a song!! This brought memories back in high school . The 1980's was so much more than today's "more". I'm glad you liked and approved this song.
i love this song too brother! my dad heard it everytime it came on the radio in the 80s! thanks god i was an 80s baby lol! 1982this is grown folks music young man lol!
Bro im 40. I was sneaking in the juke joints jamming this one. Back when Thunderbird was the word...lol... But Thats a classic we all still love that song. My 14 year old son be rockin that head when i jam to it.
I’m 44 and my older sister was in high school and brought this record home from school when I was in the 6th grade. She also had Debarge and New Edition records. I played these 3 records daily
He was a one hit wonder...i remember thinking he was "fine" when i would see the video and they played it on BET all the time..this was when BET qnd MTV was watchable its garbage now..also remember distinctly about Gregory Abbott he didnt have another hit and he was married to a popular actress back then and they were divorcing and he asked for alimony ...that was something men didnt do at that time
Man, I am 48 and I remember making slow jam mix tapes back from 1990 to when I was out of the country When I got back 3 years later, I was still making mix tapes for the Ladies with this song. One side of the mix tape had the uptempo slow jams like this and "Don't go any further by sideah Garrett. The other side would have slower tempo stuff like Lionel Ritchies Hello. Good Times!!!!!
Song was written and produced by him in August 1986 his biggest hit love his Beautiful and Sexy green eyes was a BIG hit back in the days when men and women had more respect for each other which is so lacking today love your versatility honesty and outlook on life don't ever change Love and Blessings to you and your family keep up the great job your doing
Oh wow!!! I love this cheesy classic. Speaking of cheesy I would LOVE to see your reaction to another 80's hit, "Wish I had a Girl" by Henry Lee Summer, which reached number 20 on Billboard. HOWEVER you have to watch the video...it is 80's gold!! lol
Cheesy is the right word. It was cool though. As for your Henry Lee Summer request, I was like wow I forgot about him. I'm about the check him out again. It's been a long time. "I Wish I Had A Girl" was a great song. Reminding me of John Mellencamp of whom I'm a big fan.
I'm 60 in my wife and I used to enjoy dancing to this song. That was a slow bump and grind back in the day. When you romanced your woman on the dance floor
