Welcome to Monster Madness 2019!! Mike and James review both Gremlins films. The Halloween/Christmas/Office classic!! The first film is about a boy who inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town. Yes! And the theme of the commercialism of christmas. On the commentary for the original, I remember Joe Dante remarking about how many scenes he had to fight to keep in and he said something like "I wanted to KILL commercial christmas with this fucking thing!" 😆

I love Gremlins but man, I spent the better part of a half year as a kid letting a light be on in a room for at least a minute before I even set foot in it. To this day, it is the only movie I have ever watched that caused any kind of real world change of habit like that to me.

As for the "How do you define midnight?" thing, I've always assumed that they run on the same rules as most magical creatures. "Midnight" is the point halfway between dusk and dawn, and traditionally, dawn what was brought the new day, therefore "after midnight" would be any point in time between midnight and dawn. That would also be a local time, so yes, if you're in a supersonic plane traveling west, it would fuck things up. Time zones and such wouldn't because they don't influence dusk and dawn, so taking a single step into a different time zone wouldn't change the rules, because your 2-3 feet of movement only changes dusk/dawn for you by microseconds.

I always figured it had something to do with ambient light or radiation or something. If we assume that the photosensitivity of Mogwai and Gremlins is due to UV radiation or perhaps photon saturation in the atmosphere, then the time between midnight and dawn would be the hours of least saturation, and thus would be the safest for them to metamorphose after eating. It wouldn't do a Mogwai any good to eat during the day and run the risk of being flash-fried right after emerging from it's cocoon, so there could be a genetic marker that prevents that from happening during certain hours.

I remember in the VHS release they Hulk Hogan scene was replaced. Instead of Hulk Hogan yelling at them to start the movie we see John Wayne shooting a few to get them out of your TV.

I rented the VHS many times in the 90s and always loved the old western tribute. I was able to purchase the special edition of Gremlins 2 which features the scene with the Hulkster challenging the Gremsters along with the John Wayne scene as a special feature/ alternate scene.

I also somehow never saw these despite being born the same year as james. I feel like it was more of a vhs rental flick, as opposed to one you would see again and again on TV. Or when DVDs were popular, I never saw Gremlins in stores or in people's collections. It's a little more under the radar for a big,.commercial movie.

Same here. Had nightmares for a long time. That and child's play. I was bout the same age when I saw both of those. My grandmother ended up sending me a "my buddy" doll in the mail for xmas like a month later. I put that thing in my closet and locked it in there for about a year before getting my parents to give it to someone or throw it away. There were definitely some scenes I had trouble watching, but now they're both great :)

Just like *_Critters,_* a great and underrated movie (no matter how much CGI tries, animatronics shall always look better and more organic; just as the recent series of *_The Dark Crystal_* proved us), same for its sequel by being more comical and hammy. Can't say the same for *the upcoming prequel-based cartoon,* though... Hope I'm wrong there.

Man, I absolutely love these movies, they're actually one of the few that I own a special edition of, just found it at some leftover video club years ago and had to get it.

Gremlins 3 is my most anticipated movie ever. I’ve wanted a third Gremlins more then any other movie. Gremlins I feel, are the most versatile movie monster. You can put them in any situation or setting and it’d be a whole lot of fun seeing them cause chaos and wreck whatever’s around.

A gremlins sequel would be SO appropriate right now. Both films weren't just fun monster horror comedies, they also took the piss out of then-modern technology. These days, we have SO MUCH MORE technology for them to fuck with: smartphones, GPS, self-driving cars, drones, etc. You could make a whole franchise out of gremlins screwing with people
