I was 10 at the time so old enough not to be too scared by it, and also couldn't understand why my mom was so upset. As an adult, I get it. It is a bit intense for little ones, so guess it was good they created this intermediate rating. Problem is now so many film makers water down movies that could be R rating so they get the PG-13. So unfortunately it had the opposite effect and made it so adult movies aren't as good because they tame them down - LOL

Insofar as the story about the horrifying tale told of how her father died, the editor wanted to cut it out, the studio wanted to cut it out. Spielberg told Dante that it was up to him, so he kept it in. @@samantha_schmitt please react to my 2 favorite Christmas movies Die Hard(1988) Lethal Weapon(1987) These ARE Christmas movies! I don't care what other people say these movies & Gremlins are Christmas movies in my house & have been for over 12 years now. When my twin boys got old enough to watch some these movies then I let them watch & the youngest Jesse said out of all of these movies he liked Gremlins the most. Please also react to my son Jesse's favorite movie Small Soldiers(1998) from the same director of the Gremilns . He used to watch every day & I mean everyday after breakfast. It got so bad that I used hide that movie but he was always would be able to find it.

Was originally ment to be a straight horror and Gizmo was ment to turn into Stripe but Spielberg suggested lighting the tone and changing Gizmo to make him more marketable. With Gremlins 2 the studio let Joe Dante do what he wanted so the Warner brothers style cartoon violence and humour is turned up a notch also the movie is a rebuttal to the critics of the first film.

Gremlins (1984) Chris Columbus' script went through a few drafts before a shooting script was finalized. His original version had the Gremlins killing the dog and cutting off the mom's head and tossing it down the stairs. These elements were never shot due to the fact that director Joe Dante and Warner Brothers wanted the movie to be more family-oriented. www.imdb.com/title/tt0087363/trivia?item=tr0756218

The original script was a much darker horror movie. Gizmo became a gremlin and the mother was killed, with her head thrown down the stairs towards Billy. They decided to lighten it up and keep Gizmo cute. This movie and "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" led to the PG-13 rating, with Spielberg himself (Gremlins producer and Temple director) asking for a rating between PG and R because he felt neither of them fit those films and parents had complained about them being PG.

Fun fact. The script of the movie was written by Christopher Columbus (director of the first two Harry Potter films, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, etc). But the story is loosely based off of a book called The Gremlins by Roald Dahl (who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, Matilda, etc). It is Roald Dahls story that popularized the lore of "Gremlins" to Western culture, and this movie led to us using the term "gremlins" as part of our vernacular.

"It's PG!" Yeah...fun fact, the PG-13 rating didn't exist yet when this movie came out. :) As far as body count in Kingston Falls, the only confirmed deaths on screen are Ms. Deagle and the teacher. The fact that Corey Feldman's character survived along with "Rockin' Ricky" indicates people were able to survive/escape them. Even the Futtermans survived (if you listen to the news story in the background, it's mentioned that they talked to the press; plus they show up in the sequel). The guy who ran the bank was also killed by the gremlins, but that's only in a deleted scene (they find his body in the bank...as well as Gerald having gone insane).
