Man that Chinatown set was masterful. It really made you feel like it took place in NYC. So much movie magic happened in the 80s. This movie is just an all time classic.
Me and a friend went to go see Gremlins when it was originally released in theaters. It was the first time we went to go see a film in a theater all by ourselves. We took the RTD bus from our neighborhood over to the Glendale Galleria to see it. Good times.
I had to do a double take on the police officer. Knew that was Jonathan Banks. Of course I didn't know that when it first came out. Great job as usual. Love the ending. Thanks!
Damn dawg, considering that many of the locations were “inaccessible”, you nailed this episode. I remember being scared as hell when I watched Gremlins as a kid, yet nowadays I see how funny it is. By the way, some of those set locations look a lot like Nightmare on Elm street scenes (I don’t recall you doing any episodes on Nightmare on Elm street by the way… or did you? Hahaha, Gen-Xer getting old). Thank you for another good episode Kurt!
15:41 funniest scene of an old lady being killed? Iol. Also, it's so sad to see those iconic locations gone or have been demolished. And I agree that Kate's story is the most depressing Christmas story ever, it freaked me out as a kid.
Omg how amazing is this? It's simple, but it's so interesting to get all these locations in one spot but over 2 locations, Absolutely brilliant kurt 10/10 from me. Keep up the amazing work, and I'm looking forward to the next one.. Oh.. have you all noticed when Mrs deagle is killed the gremlins cuts the break cable on the police car, when the police car drives off it slows down and the break lights come on lol...
Thank u brutha , this was a trip down memory lane , always watch gremlins at christmas , look forward to watching more of your videos 👍 support from Auckland New Zealand 💯😎
Great video!! You left us on a cliffhanger! Will there be anymore 80's life videos? Did Kurt survive the attack? All of these questions and many more will be answered on the next episode of...80's life. I bet you thought i was going to say soap?
The first X-mas movies that popped into my head were Elf and Bad Santa. Elf was filmed in New York and Vancouver, BC, Bad Santa takes place Phoenix but it was all filmed in California, Long Beach stood in for Miami Beach and Thurman's house was in West Hills.
Thank you for mentioning Lethal Weapon as a Christmas movie. While I don't think Die Hard is actually a Christmas movie, if you accept Die Hard as one then you have to count Lethal Weapon and a lot of "Die Hard is a Christmas movie" advocates never even think about Lethal Weapon.
Funny, I just watched that Movie again on Saturday, 1st time since it came out. I was thinking, Where did they film that and then you posted this. Great work.
I think the film history in all those locations adds greatly to the charm and was probably done intentionally for that reason. It’s kind of an homage to classic films in several ways.
On the movie theater marquee. A Boy’s life was the working title for E.T and Watch the Skies was the pre-production title for Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

It’s always amazing to me how many iconic movies, that you thought were filmed all over on location, were actually shot in just a couple of places on a backlot. Kind of ruins the illusion rewatching them in some ways. As an adult today, I guess I can sort of tell if I think about it. But especially as a kid in the 80’s, I really had no idea and didn’t even think about it.
A lot of people today will say their favorite Christmas movie is Die Hard. Mine is Gremlins. You could even remove the creatures and still have a good Christmas movie with Mrs. Deagle as some Scrooge-like character.
I don’t know why but when i was a kid that movie creeped me out flinging an old lady out of the window and tying their dog up with Christmas lights really messed me up but definitely Gremlins all in all is a holiday classic.
Gerald does literally say Billy is practically supporting his whole family. I think the scene where Billy catches his mom crying was part of the money problems storyline that didn’t make it fully into the film.
Btw the science teacher's phone on his desk can only call the school office and perhaps other classrooms but it can't call off campus - that's why he used the pay phone :)
I was watching this about a month ago and it popped in my head no one has done movie location vids. Then I realized the whole thing was back lots and sound stages.
