Herbie Hancock's sister, Jean, wrote the lyrics. Herbie wrote about her in his recent book, Possibilities. Jean left the planet too soon. I love her lyrics. Gretchen and everyone with her are the best. Makes the first Monday after winter break so much better.
Bumped into her and the drummer Mark Guiliana, in Tokyo the other day at the Jazz Festival. She was sitting on the floor eating pizza with her son. I though I know that face, and had to ask her to confirm, she said yes - was sooo happy.
I love that she has studied and respects the African musical traditions and not afraid to represent on that. That's one of the things that's special about her. I've seen her twice and she's an amazing talent. I love her.
Love her, too! She has an amazing sense , and what a tight band! That's how you make a grammy winning record. She's a mother now. Wonder if she's ever comming back .
Incredible how they take all take a simple motif, and repeatedly play it with every possible embellishment imaginable. What a fantazmic journey through the astral plane. Thank you, Gretchen.
Gretchen - the vocals are obviously impeccable, but I have to throw out kudos to your supporting cast - Taylor Eigsti - Piano & Keyboard, Alan Hampton - Bass & Voice, and Mark Guiliana - Drums -- you guys are are unbelievably tight. Your coloring as well as timing are extraordinary. Thank you for entertaining me just now....I am now a superfan!
This is one of the FINEST play i've ever heard in my life. Taste, style, technique, true musical craftsmanship. Graceful! Plus, Mark Guiliana will be remembered as one of the best drummer in history.
Why am I just hearing of her!? I too came here from listening to Herbie. Had never heard the piece with lyrics. This blessed my soul. I'd love to hear her sing with Robert Glasper, which the style of this piece reminded me of.
Gosh i cry every time that bridge hits and the songwriting just touches my heart. I've been listening to this song for years and you've captured the soul of a beautifully well crafted song. You, Gretchen, are one of God's children and he's gifted you with a voice that peered into the hardships and complications in my life. I genuinely love for bringing this song into my life. I cry as i write this because every word and every sound you've made to artiscally approach such a heart warming song is simply phenomenal. I really hope you see my comment. You've captured me and i hope, dream that i can be in front of you while you perform this song one day in my life. I will explode with uncontrollable tears. This song reminds me to be happy everyday and to cherish the people i once knew that taught me lessons as well as the people who are currently in my life right now. Thank you Gretchen and God bless you. 😢🦋This song and your voice is forever.
Er zijn meer zielen die van deze sound emotioneel worden, dat is alleen maar bewonderenswaardig. Zou het vreemder vinden als je onberoerd zou blijven. Blijf luisteren,geniet.succes.
Wow!!!! I'm sitting here, trying to find the words to described this delicate but powerful experience, I've just had. Words just aren't up to the task, but I'll do my best. Surrender your passport and your mind to a journey to a place, not on the any map, from which you may never fully return. The transcendent spirit goddess that is Gretchen Parlato, accompanied by the dynamic subtly of her superb ensemble, will transport you there. All you have to do is surrender.
My favorite part of this is the last minute or so. Normally, the bass or the drums have to stay constant in a build-up or else it will just be chaos. Sometimes the keys or guitar get a cool motif to hold down while everyone else has fun. But here, Gretchen holds the motif and her trio all get to build and lay their stuff out. So cool.
I just discovered Gretchen Parlato today while listening our local great jazz station KCSM-FM and I was clearly mesmerized by the very first second I heard her vocalizing. I am a jazz fan and I cannot fathom why I never heard of her until today. Wow I immediately compiled everything she's done in a Spotify playlist. Wow what a wonderful songstress married to one of the greatest drummers, Mark Giuliana! Match made in Music Heaven✨
I never realized that the song ever had lyrics. My sister sent me to this video, 'cause we both know the song. I didn't get the connection until around 1:05 when Gretchen started singing the main melody. Great rendition, really great.
I came across this while listening to the original Hancock version. Gretchen does a remarkable job of adding vocalese to the composition and her band mates are very good. Very interesting and creative. I hope to listen to more of her work.
WOWIE!!! I just happened upon Gretchen by way of an Amazon Jazz station, which in turn made me seek out Gretchen on RU-vid. I'd describe her singing/voice as very 'naked'. I tell ya...the amount of talent in NYC is unbelievable! I'm so lucky to LIVE in such an amazing city!
We’re doing this exact song in my Latin/Fusion jazz combo, and playing piano on this song is so much fun! The piano solo gives me major stank face everytime I listen to this! 😆
I've seen Gretchen perform recently in NYC at The Jazz Gallery near Koreatown, the Rockwood Music Hall in LES, and at Newport Jazz a couple of times before that. And while i have a strong appreciation and default inclination to connect with her new stuff, THIS gives me life. I'm still caught 'In a Dream,' not sure i'll ever escape. Peace & love...
Es fantastica una señora del Jazz, cuando la oigo me hace muy feliz. es lo que nos falta a las per sonas que apreciamos el buen jazz. gracias Gracias por cantar como los angeles .
