for anyone watching this video who are thinking about a gretsch but not sure it's for you, definitely try one out if you can. they are a lot more versatile than you may think. i just recently bought a gretsch electromatic G5422T with the blacktop humbuckers and love it i have to say. i was looking for a guitar completely different from any that i have previously owned and the gretsch definitely fills that spot being both semi acoustic and with a bigsby. i love my guitar i have to say. i don't play any rockabilly or country music (not that i don't like either genre i must add just that i am not good enough lol) but i love how i can get some shimmering clean sounds (especially with some reverb and delay). the bigsby trem is great for adding some subtle vibrato to the sound. when you want to add some gain though the guitar sounds great too though ( i just bought a blackstar core 20 stereo amp and it sounds great through it) it is a very versatile guitar imho and i loves mine :-)
I remember my old G5120, the first guitar I bought for myself, as I was inspired by Billy Duffy of the Cult at the time (and yes, I know he plays White Falcons, not something similar to the G5120.) Sadly, I got a helluva lemon with sharp fret ends, a scratchy tone knob, a Bigsby that kept flipping open, and loose tuners; I got rid of it after about 8 months. Glad that Gretch stepped up the quality of the Electromatic line.
I just got one of these on a trade and it IS easy to play. I never was a big Gretsch guy but I'm impressed with it. It sounds really good and it is versatile.
Great video! I was able to play one of these at a music shop. It certainly has a great tone and practically played itself. I am definitely purchasing one.
I received one of these, brand new, for free because a family friend died before he could touch it. It's beautiful, sturdy, and sounds amazing. And he is correct, this guitar is versatile for all music. I play punk, reggae, blues, anything from it. I have a strat, and I prefer to grab this gretsch instead, crank the overdrive, and thrash some metallica any day!
My korean made 5120 is made as nice as a usa one. The Korean made guitars are amazing quality. I did replace the pickups with gold dynasonics. Unreal! I did it because the guitar was worth it. My go to axe for surf, rockabilly, and country.
This foam that all you people are so anxious for him to remove is actually factory installed double stick tape to attach the bridge to the body. This allows the bridge to be moved and placed where desired for intonation and other factors. Gretsch players been doing this for years.
Ive got a black one, it's amazing, I gig with it every week and it's rock solid, sounds amazing and is eye catching, although I noticed the new ones in the shop I go to have had their pickups changed and I don't think they are as good as the older ones.
own it love it!! very well made beautiful sound. use it in praise and worship at church, but also does quite nicely with my vox ad30vt to emulate beatles sounds.
One tone that he didn't use that simply kills is a nice OD through a Fender Blackface or Tweed type amp. Simply kills for some nice, fat, touch sensitive, warm rock and roll sounds. I never used mine much with distortion, per se (save that for the semihollow types like the G5435), but loved it with a nice drive.
Geoff, its the perfect guitar for you. But try and get the older one with the double pickups rather than the humbuckers. The same as he's got. It looks brilliant and sounds amazing.
... 02/16/2020: I have a Gretsch Electromatic 5120, which I love, except for one feature. The 3-way toggle switch clicks real loud when switching each position. Is there a quick fix for that noise without changing the toggle switch? If not, what brand of toggle switch would be silent?
what colour is this? I played one in a store and it looked like this colour, but on the website, it says it only comes in orange, black, and sunburst. This one looks a little more red than the orange though or is it just me? Thanks!
If you want to buy a both a new electric and a steelstring acoustic, would this make a good compromise? Any hollowbody in general i mean :) Volume isnt important on the acoustic part as it's only for me in my sofa or out in the sun ;)
LOL! He forgot to remove the plastic protector under the bridge that the factory put on to prevent the bridge from scratching the top finish. While there is still sound transmission possible through the protector foam, it deadens some of the treble response of the strings .."guitar stays in tune really well"..LOL..don't use the whammy bar on the Bigsby too much then.
how thick is the neck on that guitar. I have the Joe Pass model in red. the neck on that guitar is very thick and it's hard to do any thing fancy on the Joe Pass guitar. I'm looking for a good guitar with a thinner neck so it would be easier for shredding.
I'm thinking of buying one of this but a used one for $450 at guitar center, what are the musts to check on the guitar to make sure everything is good prior to purchase?
İn my 50 some years of playing I never understood why some people prefer the Fendies or the Gibbies when there was always a Gretsch around ay around same prices... :)))
It´s orange. a friend of mine has the same guitar, an it really has kind of a redish colour to it... I have a G5120 electromatic of the first series they made, and the orange is really orange ;-)
Hey, I'm looking for a decent guitar for me as i'm starting college soon, would you recomend this? I'm a grade four acoustic but I just prefer rhythm. I'm into alot of blues & rock and should be getting in a band through college. I've seen this guitar for about £512 in white, but its an extra £80 for it in black, do you think I should get one?
Remove the foam from under your bridge. My dream was to have a Gretsch one day. I keep putting it off until one day I bought a Gretsch Corvette solid body. The stupid Bigsby is like grits down south they come with every thing. My Gretsch Corvette II is the biggest piece of shit I ever had fall apart in my hands. It too was $700 bucks. I couldn't give this turde away. That was my dream guitar and I had to live with it for weeks. It is gone by way of an even trade for a Jay Turner that was about $200'bucks.
Well then, tell this guy about resonate transfer and sustain bucko! Around 9 minutes. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0HU84CCvST8.htmlm12s
