GREY HERON - The Rat Catcher

Whilst strolling around the park something caught this heron's eye, near the litter bin. It went to take a closer look and, quick as a flash, it caught a rat. Once it got a secure grip of the rat it flew up to the trees to share it with the rest of the family.

I have just seen something similar in Rochdale town centre. Heron in the river but looking at the vegetation on the bank. I then spotted a rat nearby and realised it was ratting! Sure enough, 5 minutes later it caught a young rat. Very opportunistic bird and it won't be going hungry any time soon!

This is a young heron on my video, about three or four months old. It has flown from the island on to the public footpath and is unperturbed by pedestrians walking close by. I didn't know what it had seen when it stopped. I was surprised when it lifted its head with a rat in its mouth. They are lightning quick at snatching their prey.

People won’t complain about this person filming this but will complain about a stationary camera catching another bird attacking another birds nest or someone in the safari filming a lion catching an impala and eating it 😂

"A dinosaur versus our great, great, great etc. Grand daddy. battle." Analogy-wise. Respect both animals. They survived the K-band asteroid extinction. Are birds warm-blooded?

The heron is talented but inexperienced. You can tell because it doesn’t go to the water to use as dipping sauce.

Amsterdam's Herons seem to eat just eggs and chickens of waterfowl, never saw them catch mice or rats, and there is plenty of them here, starting from Central Station onward. Why Don't they take a lesson or two from their English siblings? Should they came here to teach them how to do it? Maybe the Dutch ones should be informed how tasty and nutrient rat's meat is. Oh God, how much I dislike rats! Especially at 5 o clock in the morning, when I m going to catch my train, and they aren't shy at all in CS neighborhood. To be honest, I've seen a sensible decrease in rabbits, and I assume it is due to the seagulls, because they are gigantic and in great numbers around here, still no apparent change in rats' quantity, so I don't think they know yet how lekker those rodents are. How can we explain that to them? Should we transmit this very video on mega screens all around the city? PS: Paris suffer much more than we do in Holland, but having seen this with my own eyes doesn't comfort me the least...

this heron was about three months old. It had flown from the island, where its nest had been, to the public footpath which circles the lake. It wasn't bothered by pedestrians walking close by whereas the older herons keep well away from the public. Rats can sometimes be seen near litter bins and this heron must have spotted one and instinctively knew how to catch it. I think it likely that Dutch and French herons have the same instincts. Maybe your rats and mice are too smart to be caught.

Have seen them eat rats ( remember rats are also same family as squiirels minus bushy tail ) Heron are the main reason baby ducklings are eaten and geese -If only they would stick to fish lol Seriously they have to eat since there is no supermarket .for wildlife .However what gets me is 80% of the public will love this yet be reviled were it a seagull since seagulls have a rotten press .Well filmed .My comment is for the" cute brigade " 👍🐀

Thanks Helena. I"m always amazed at the speed at which they can snatch their prey. They're impressive hunters but I think the rat should have spotted the danger.
