i didn't, but my aunt did.. i was little at the time and even tho i did know about the cancer i was not mature enough or understood what it really meant so i did nothing with that information. because of her, however, i decided that i will be tested as soon as i will be able to afford it, so that i will know if i have any increased risk. anyway thank you for these video reactions! i think it would be very interesting for you to react to house md, because of the kind of tv show it is: it's full of rare or hard to diagnose diseases, it would be super interesting to see what a genetic counselor would think if it! anyway, speaking of grey's anatomy i think it would be interesting for you to react to episode 13 of season 3 ("great expectations")
@@queeng508 Thank you for watching! I recommend that you find a genetic counselor who can help guide you through the genetic testing process, including costs, benefits, and limitations (www.nsgc.org/page/find-a-genetic-counselor). I will see if there are any House MD episodes related to hereditary cancer and will check out the GA episode that you suggested!
Preventative mastectomy completed and oophorectomy/ hysterectomy coming. My doctors could not have been more supportive. “You just live longer with these surgeries.”
This was SO informative and I really appreciated this video. I'm currently applying to genetic counseling programs! I have EDS and have a RU-vid channel dedicated to educating about heritable CTDs and chronic illness. I think you're the only genetic counselor who has a RU-vid channel. I'm so excited to watch the rest of your videos.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!! Good luck with the application process (feel free to DM/email me if you have any particular questions). I think this is probably one of the best professions in the world ❤️ ps - I just checked out your channel - amazing work raising awareness about EDS!
I remember this episode clearly from watching it as a teenager. My mom has had breast cancer twice and this episode made me aware of the possibility of preventative surgery should my risk be considered high. And I was like "yes, I'm absolutely getting preventative surgery if I end up in a situation like that. Why has nobody mentioned this to me before!"
This is the first video of yours I'm watching and I'm thoroughly impressed. Bravo. I work in the medical field and have considered going back for more school (yikes) to become a Genetic Counselor
If I needed this or did a genetic test that would look like a risk to this type of cancer, I'd do the surgery without caring what other people say. Very interesting, and I don't think I'm the only one who wants you to react to other episodes of Grey's anatomy.
@@CancerGC You're welcome. Idk if know about Private Practice- its a spin off of Grey's Anatomy featuring Addison Montgomery as the lead. I'd really like you to review Season 1 Episode 2 of Private Practice, it revolves around a genetic disorder too.
Unrelated to the BRCA gene, but I want a t-shirt that says something like “I have a mutated gene and all I got out of it was a nervous system full of tumors”. On second thought it might be too wordy for a t-shirt.
There are A LOT of genes related to epilepsy and about 10% of breast cancers are hereditary. Definitely recommend you speak with a Genetic Counselor to learn about genetic testing options 😊
