Let's go to the Shipshewana, Indiana sports card show on Sunday, September 1, 2024.
The TripleCrown24 RU-vid channel is focused around one dealer's journey through the hobby via card shows, discourse with fellow hobbyists, and grading submission reveals. Today's video recaps the buy/sell/trade transactions from my most recent card show.

Great advice you gave the kid with the Witt. I’m sure he will appreciate the fact that you advised him to keep the card instead of facing regret later for selling it. A lot of people could care less about stuff like that but shows a lot about your character which we all already know is top notch. Great stuff JT!

Man I don't know if I could ever stay sane If I was on the dealers side. Dealers pay for tables, take time, and effort to set up. Then guys come to your table to sell and expect 100% on comps. I understand you guys have to make money when I come to dealer tables to sell, so have to have some room or the math doesn't make sense. Props to you for always being paitent and respectful to everyone.

Thank you, it certainly wouldn't do me any favors to be rude to anyone, I try to keep it at "thanks but no thanks" and go on about my business. Buying is much more difficult now than it was even a couple of years ago.

So, the show we setup at 2 weeks ago, before we got setup on day 1, within 20 minutes of vendor setup starting. Boston breaks and dynamic breaks were walking around offering 120% of the highest comp for downtowns, kaboom and Prizm CJ Stroud color psa 10's. They were offering 110% for almost any football case hit from the last couple years and 100% for any notable football player. I literally couldn't get setup bc so many of these "buyers" were coming by. A half dozen dug through my pelican cases and pulled out stacks to be set aside. I say all this, to point out that the days of below comp sales on notable players, cards and case hits are OVER! If you want the prices to go down, then stop buying into breaks. I sold my over 20 of my best cards an hour before the show opened! All went for OVER comps.i also never took under 90% of comps all show long and you know what, all the lowball cards that were offered on, ended up selling. I think the market is at a place where close to comps is where the customer is going to buy at.

Great comment, I'd venture to say that reason those breakers paid that strong is because they need the cards more than you did. If they want people to join their breaks with repacks, those repacks better have some cool cards. Otherwise, there are dozens of other breaks to join with better cards to hit. I had a guy come up to me at the Spooky Nook show two days before this one asking if I was willing to "sell at a bulk discount" of 80-82%. I'm not willing to, nor do I need to do that. Sometimes I feel like the repackers don't understand that I don't have to have a fire sale on my cards every week, that's coming from someone who relies on the cards for their income. Most dealers are not in my shoes, they could earn $0 from the hobby and still be okay. We have certainly reached a point where the good stuff is going to fetch a premium until something changes.

Hopefully, the trend of 90% and up is where it stays. As a dealer, myself, I’m constantly getting asked “what’s my percentage” and “can you do 80%”.

@JBCards-nn9zi I had hundreds of people try to show me a low comp and offer me lower or try to buy a thousand dollar stack for $800. I turned every single one down . Amd at the end of the weekend, all my best stuff was gone! Over half my 3 cases worth of inventory. Now I'm not saying I didn't make some deals with old stuff or things that don't get a lot of looks, but all my football and in-demand cards I held out and it worked. Best margin yet at 38% for the show after all my expenses. And it's bc I didn't take a single low offer.

@@averagejoe7638 Good for you for holding your own on the lowball deals. I had a guy rack up $950 in cards, and he wanted to know what I’d do for him. I told him let’s just call it $900 even. He looked at me and said I gotta be at $750 for this to even work for me. When I told him I couldn’t even come close he said good luck selling cards and walked shaking his head. I sold everything he wanted by end of show at sticker or close to. The trend is shifting.

I was at the Ship show too. I think traffic was the same as previous shows.

Great video! It seems like the collectors are more easy on you than the resellers. Take care.

I gotta laugh when you told the guy it sells for $40 you offered $30 which is fair and then he ask can you pay $40 😂. Then he says “I’ve had the card forever”. You just can’t make this stuff up. I don’t understand why guys turn down fair offers and expect comps when they are on the other side of the table.

Same psychology block as some dealers who won’t sell at 100% of high end of comps because they’re in it for too much. Like I don’t understand the viewpoint that they’ll trade out of the card at a loss but won’t accept cash at a loss. Objectively the same value in cash is always better than the same value in trade, but somehow based on a past mistake they’ll intentionally make a present one

That is a big challenge of being a dealer in 2024. There are some guys locally who always come up looking to sell who have the same cards over and over. It's at the point where I don't bother looking anymore.
