A very beautiful sound made by the top player and amazing historical instrument. Warm, tight, robust, bright...and sophisticated wooden sound. John, thank you from Japan
I've never played upright, but I see much of the physicality that is described with the instrument. It seems like a dance with the instrument as much as a song.
So true. I’ve been playing six months upright after years of bass and the pain is excruciating. I know it’s just bad technique but still not easy to fix.
Amazing - the intonation is man! Lol I’ll get to this level soon. John, Brian and Christian are my motivation to master the upright as an electric bass player.
Does John put his soul into this piece or what? For a left handed man, he surely has strong and coordinated right fingers. Beautiful work John Patitucci. I can't even recall what I was thinking about before I heard this. Had to play it twice. Thank you for sharing your work so freely.
@@douglasdiggins8296 Not implied. He has a strong right hand for a born lefty. It is physically challenging for some left handed players to pick well. Especially so when first learning the instrument. I'm strongly left handed and play right handed basses. It was hard work building my left had up. I play well but it did not come easily.
@@charlesmcgehee3227 there is no evidence supporting what you are saying. Left handed players may have same adaptation required in their early months of learning, but the difference ia negligible.
I attended a clinic you gave in Miam Dade College back around 1992. You've been a great influence on my playing since. You are the bassist encyclopedias should have a picture of when describing what it means to be one. Your technique is flawless on both electric and acoustic but your tone and your melodic phrasing is what I still strive to achieve. You are a great influence. Thank you!
When I was a young lad my Mom used to always say about a great musician, "Wow, they really can make that instrument talk." That always stuck with me. To make your music speak to an audience. After all, it is a language. John is the epitome of an exceptional musician. He most certainly spiritually communicates to us with his music and his bass playing. Especially, as displayed here. What an incredible voice. Beautiful note choices and feel. He truly can make his instrument talk. Great music.
I'm taking a picture of this video and will use it to turn my shed space into something the looks exactly like this space. The wood panel walls are reflecting and kicking the bottom of the bass back up to his ears. The effect is intimate.... like wearing headphones. Thanks Uncle John.
It's funny, the very first "rig" my parents bought me when I started playing bass in 1974 was a used Gibson EB-3 bass and a used Ampeg B-15 amp from our local music store. Of course, when I went off to college in 1981, stupid me thought "I want all new fancy gear", so I sold both and bought an Ibanez bass and a Music man amp. Now 41 years later I would KILL to get that first rig back! 🤣
Thank you for sharing this video! So nice to see you playing at your home studio! 🙂 Hope to see many more videos in the future! I wish you all the best!
So much soul and feeling and mastery of style! My mind went to the bluesy original music from New Orleans. Thank you my friend for this inspirational and great tune! Lovely!
What a beautiful, soul stirring, groove bomb of a powerful tune. Wow! I love you Mr. Patitucci and love your music that has inspired me for decades since my teenage years. Thank you!
Picked up on your sound back in '86. I'd come home from performing with the symphony and take my mind off of that music, and listen to yours. You were with Chick a long time, buddy. You paid your dues. I pray all is well these days. The glissandos are cool tool of artistry, man. My favorite moments were the contra G's with that cool sawtooth. What a sound! That one lingers in my ear for awhile.
I’ve played guitar, drums, and piano all my life. Never had an interest in playing bass. Then I discovered you …now I think it’s head and shoulders the coolest instrument of all.
I LOVE IT!!! Subscribed! This is a shot in the dark but, do you know Craig Leon? His studio looked EXACTLY like that! We wrote our first song together in 1963. He went on to Produce The Ramones, and Blondie, and Conduct the London Symphony Orchestra. I went on to work with Rodney Crowell, The Judds, Ricky Nelson and many more. Craig also worked with Rodney. Like I said, A shot in the dark. If you did know him, that would be amazing! LOVED the Bass Instrumental!
wow!!! i discovered your song by searching a fitting track in the "youtube studio" for a private beach holiday video. but there was just the title mentioned, not the interprete! in my opinion the respect to the creator/artist should be shown by youtube by betraying the name of the musician, moreover when the track is for free useable! i put your song in my playlist for my funeral party as i love it very much and it will remember me now always of that holiday with my love... THANX! your new follower, Tom, from Düsseldorf/Germany
I am so grateful for you. I have always loved seeing you live, watching your instructional videos and taking in all of your great music. It takes a true New Yorker to write a great tune like this about Gridlock. Thank you for everything.
