One of the greatest ever! But I have to say Volodos is right next to him. Pletnev is also very important, although very different. Pogorelich... maybe not at the moment, but still capable of magic. Lesser known, Vladimir Viardo. And one of my favorites who just left us, Fujiko Hemming. Of the younger generation, Andrey Ponochevny, Vadym Kholodenko, Evgeni Bozhanov... We are lucky!

Incredible, touching your soul, performance! Grigory reached the highest mastery of playing Chopin. The maturity and sensitivity made him the super- artist. Chopin was the toughest for him to play artistically in his younger years. I’m blown away.

Sokolov plays such beautiful interpretations. Chopin said he played his own pieces differently depending upon his mood. He gave us some guidance in his pieces, but pianos have changed since then, as well as artistic style. Who knows how Chopin would have played them on a Steinway today. But these are certainly very well done.

Chopin preferred to play on Pleyel with much softer, suspended tones, than Steinway.

Could you please reupload the Schumann sonata no. 1 recording by Andras Schiff? I really really liked it, it was the only recording of the sonata I could listen to and enjoy. I was really saddened when I saw that it's gone. If you please reupload it, I will appreciate it very much.

Удивительно, как можно из такого волнующего и проникновенного произведения сделать пресное неинтересное и бесчувственное! 🤕

It seems to me at times very mannered and unnatural. By dint of ppp and excessive rubatos we have a caricatural playing of Chopin.
@metteholm4833

There are no exaggerations - only deep understanding of musical feeling. This music was not meant to be played "straight ahead".

He's one of the only few I've heard who actually plays the dynamics according to how they're written. It's something he takes from his extensive knowledge of Beethoven and Mozart, to a lesser extent. You can hear in many other pianists' interpretation that they never indulged enough in Chopin's predecessors before tackling his pieces.
@user-bc9mn7gq2c
@user-bc9mn7gq2c 4 месяца назад
I agree _in part_. Sometimes a phrasing choice, a change of pace or a brief dynamic effect seems inappropriate, but almost invariably it's within the context of an absorbing, colorful and insightful total performance. iow i believe he will opt to do the unexpected or piquant because he wants to engage the listener fully, every step of the way. This leads to spontaneous decisions that dont always work perfectly -- but one is seldom bored because he compensates with unparalleled clarity and color.
