This recording has been one of the most memorable Sokolov videos for me. Frustration, despair, reminiscence, nostalgia and triumph all distilled into this concerto. Highlights include the heartwarming moment from 22:23 to 23:00 and, of course, the majestic conclusion (starting from 34:32).

Thank you for going to the trouble of recording this for us Anson. I really hope Yunchan Lim hears it , if he hasn't already. I can already see some parallels in his hand movements in the large sound areas in the Rach 3, and in his attention to detail as well. Solokov is incredible. The best Rach 2 I've ever heard.

This conductor really gets this piece. This group actually plays fortissimo/triple forte whereas all others I've heard barely touch forte.

As a pianist who has heard countless recordings of Rach 2 and regularly attends Sokolov's recitals (I consider him the greatest living pianist) I am astonished that it's taken me so long to discover this recording. Undoubtedly the best I have ever heard. Sokolov sounds like his own orchestra, the voice control, colours, and sheer force are truly superhuman.

I’ve never heard of any world renowned soloist, who would prefer playing with little known conductors, but Grigory Sokolov does it to guard his artistic style and give “unspooled” new talented conductors chances to develop their own ways, refreshing his views of many times played compositions. Rachmaninoffs second piano concerto is not just technically impressive, but certainly the most beautiful piece ever composed. Words cannot describe the sublime joy and tranquility of the flute passages, nor the utter dispair of the first theme. Rqchmaninoff takes us, the audience through the entire spectrum of human emotion and experience, and he does so constantly reminding us that no matter how terrible and unjust things may become they always have the possibility to get better. This is the piece i will never stop listining to and this is the piece that i will love until i die.

I will accompany you on that journey. Rach. was my fav Composer by far. This Concerto is my very favorite. There is an old movie called, "Dangerous Moonlight." The producers or what have you tried to get Rach. to write the music for it, for which request he declined. So, a different artist was commissioned to write its music in as close a Rach. Style as possible. HE SURELY DID! It's called the "Warsaw Concerto," and the most beautiful thing I have heard outside of this Rach. Concerto. Look on RU-vid for a girl at a baby grand piano beside a big window, wearing high heeled shoes, with long hair. I think her name is Olga. She clearly has the best rendition of that song. If you haven't heard the Concerto, I think you instantly fall in love with it, as did I. Happy listening! 😊

I've listened to all the other interpretations I can find but this is the real deal. Grigory reads the mind of the composer so well and puts his soul into each note and seems to be leading the orchestra.

Yes, a lot of people mention his interpretation passionate and I'm not saying they're wrong but when I hear this recording or any other of his interpretations the first thing that comes to my mind is solidity, absoluteness like there is no search, no ambiguity whatsoever. It doesn't even sound like Rachmaninov tbh. Yet it is amazing.

I have an original expression “some people are touched and others are retouched.” This man is so totally immersed in the music that he becomes a part of the musical “space time continuum.” I have loved this concerto since first hearing it in the mid seventies. If “What is from the heart goes straight to the heart”, this pianist by his radiant interpretation knits together the hearts of every music lover into a cosmic mosaic that rushes over the cusp of that Angels waterfall that, if I am not mistaken, is located somewhere in the African motherland. It is simply a rare occasion when I am moved so profoundly by a performance of this well worn masterpiece. I perceive Rachmaninov himself would be moved to tears by such ardent warmth and consummate beauty of power and expression. I listened to this rendition last night and am sure to return again and again. Thank you indeed Mr. Sokolov! PWG

Such an excellent recording. I actually can hear the piano rather than it getting lost behind the orchestra. It helps as I don't read worth crap but learn pieces from hearing them played. And I can clearly hear each note. It is as if one side of the stereo is only piano.

Какая гармония между солистом и оркестром!!! Слушаю не первый раз. Первый раз, когда узнала этого пианиста, прослушав его целый вечер, на утро проснулась, а в уме звучит эта музыка. Слава Богу, что в моё время ещё есть такие пианисты.

This piece by Rachmanioff with Grigory Soklov, Pianist performance with Conductor Jukka Peķka Saraste and orchestra Finland Radio Symphony 1993 in Helsinki is exquisite !! Sokoloff, I have never seen play until today. His brilliance in this performance is with complete abandonment, forceful, and passionate, as seen with a touch of fingers with notes flying with his soul unmatched . Bravo 👏 Bravo 👏 to all. With the deepest appreciation and admiration for such artistry. ❤

Bravo Monsieur Sokolov! Bravo! Just a beautiful piece and interpretation. First heard this masterpiece with Sviatoslav Richter many years ago. He was also amazing and a Rachmaninov specialist.....thanks for posting 😊
