The gigantic stature that Rameau reached in composition is here shocased with what is probbaly one of the best interpretations on piano. We enjoy fabulous musical heights, constructed incredibly with very few notes, but reaching outstanding and memorable beauty. My absolute favorite is "Les Cyclopes". And I still wonder why the title. :-) Thanks for posting!
I play music (piano) for 26 years but I must say that (I guess) I have never enjoyed anything else more than this.. I've heard Sokolov playing this live in Concertgebouw and he was the one who introduced me to Rameau.. (remember that I kind of did not care about the rest concert at all, was absolutely blown away from this..) And now, finally I printed some of these pieces (and some more like Les Sauvages, Gavotte from A-minor suite etc..), started preparing it, and really, this is pianist's (resp. keyboard player's) real extasy..
I don't play piano or any instrument. But I love music, especially baroque and french school to be specific. I know it well enough. But Sokolov just opened something in it for me I never have heard and thus felt. Always get chocked when he plays Rameau or Couperin. His level of intimacy with material is unprecedented and I feel like a privileged guest at the conversation between two grand masters. it is incredible feeling. Hard to describe and probably there is no need for that. Too personal. But I hear you. What he does is unique and it is inspiring. So all the good luck to you in your journey to the heart of things you want to reach to. Bon voyage! )
No doubt we the listeners are supposed to be boundlessly happy with these wonderful recordings. Sokolov is an astounding artist, and his affinity with Rameau is a delight. So much more's the pity that our good-willing recording amateur hasn't taken the trouble to teach himself to sit perfectly still....
I agree the random shuffling noises heard throughout this recording evident at times in the background can be distracting, but are they not price we have to pay for ‘not actually being there’ in person? And even if we were privileged enough to be in the audience we’d still have to contend with random shuffling sounds and coughing people around us that can equally be annoying. Thanks to marvels of modern recording techniques we are able in our millions to share these precious moments created by the musical genius, Grigory Sokolov.
Thank God the recordist was there and captured this miraculous piece of pure genius for ever. I am deeply grateful to him/her.... if you read this you have my deep gratitude.
I was once in concert Sokolov played Haydyn 11 d major concerto.Sokolov played it like a cotton candy tone. The growd and an audience was shocked they wanted him to play faster and better than Argerich Pletnev or Richter.Sokolov is the hardest trained pianists he trains a 12 hours a day playing piano
Magnifique !
Grigory Sokolov is an amazing a mindblowing.G.Sokolov can play the most titanic furious way like his Chopin Piano concerto 2 playing that is the greatest concerto playing ever beating Richter Rachmaninov 2 and Brahms 2 playing. Then Sokolov is a flexible he plays Rameau Byrd.I like the most Sokolov playing the most vital Mozart 24 piano concerto.Sokolov should make the records of the big concertos like Saint Saens 2 Brahms 2 Mozart 24 Chopin 2 piano concertos.
More often than not, music dogmatism can be a nag. They play Scarlatti on modern piano all the time and Bach's "Well Tempered" truly sounds better on the piano. In fact, I consider Gould's recordings of Byrd, Gibbons, Bull, etc as priceless. It's a shame that he didn't venture further with the likes of Couperin and Rameau. The ideosyncracies in Couperin's harpsichord suites could be captured and expressed with nuances from a modern piano and still come out elegant and compelling.
