On this week's Grilling JR with WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross & Conrad Thompson, the guys talk AEW Double Or Nothing, before getting into this week's main course, King Of The Ring '97! It was an interesting time in WWE. WCW was handily winning the ratings war week after week, Bret Hart and The Hart Foundation were the top heels in the company, and Bret and Shawn Michaels were certainly having their issues. The Undertaker was WWE Champion, Steve Austin's star was continuing to rise, and guys like Mankind, Goldust, and HHH were solidifying their characters and their spots for the upcoming Attitude Era. Plus, The Nation Of Domination, Ahmed Johnson, The Headbangers, The Legion Of Doom, Sid, Crush and more were on the card! Rate/subscribe in Apple Podcasts! New episodes every Thursday at 6 AM Hit JR on Twitter: @JRsBBQ Find JR on Facebook/Instagram: @JimRossBBQ

One thing that stood out to me for some reason about this PPV is that in the Goldust vs Crush match Goldust got the win via pinfall by using a tornado DDT instead of his signature Curtain Call. Why was that?

JR briefly mentions here they weren't sure if Austin would be a hit with kids... I was in 4th grade in 1997, and I went from the only kid in my class who watched (in the doldrum years of 93-96) to talking with a bunch of others about what was going to happen on Raw (and Nitro) each week. By far the most popular wrestler amongst the 9 and 10 year old fans was Stone Cold Steve Austin. It wasn't even close.

WWF and WCW both have shows in Los Angeles this week on the same night. WCW is treating it like an internet PPV and will be doing live audio commentary on their website (no video because, well, it's 1997. Think of how much of a pain in the ass live video streaming still is now sometimes, then subtract 20 years). They're also promising a confrontation (but not a match) between Hogan and Sting. As for WWF, their show will feature Bret Hart's return to the ring and a bikini contest with Sunny, Sable, Marlena, and Chyna. According to WWF officials, ticket sales are neck and neck, while WCW claims to be several thousand tickets ahead of WWF. Both sides are claiming that the other is heavily papering the shows. For what it's worth, Dave says that despite the perception that WWF is the #2 company, the truth is that they still consistently outdraw WCW on house shows. And the advance ticket sales for Summerslam, which is still over a month away, has already made more ticket money than WCW has ever made for any show

@@butch5419 For 83 weeks, Nitro was defeating Raw in the ratings. Wrestlers were jumping ship to WCW faster than you could say “Titanic.” Bret Hart was told the company couldn’t afford him, and the company was downsizing and taking the water coolers out of the offices. But the company was not on the verge of bankruptcy as some would believe. Actually, despite getting thumped in ratings, the WWE’s House Show and international presence was not only keeping the company afloat but helping them turn it around from an economic standpoint. 2

To me, 1997s edition of the King of the Ring is the most forgettable edition. While it had good matches, it was just there for me. There is nothing wrong with cards that are just there. It was stupid that politics play into why Hunter became the 1997 and not the 1996 King of the Ring. I like it when Conrad looks back at the business at that time of a particular ppv cause its always interesting to go back in a time capsule and see how we got here. The road to the show was interesting for sure. I am surprised they didnt have a 3rd person sit in for the King. It must have been hard for JR to work with Vince. We know as a commentator the show revolved around Vince.

A good example of why wrestling podcasts and politics don't mix. JR says people in England surely had better things to do than protest Trump. Then a few minutes later he says our society is stupid because people villainized Asians after Pearl Harbor. I wonder if he ever connected those two dots?

For stories, unpredictability and excitement I think it was, for match quality probably 2000. 1997 had some great main events and great matches studding the shows but carrying a lot of crap, bell to bell 2000 was off the charts. Although storylines tended to be "here's the same two guys as last month with a different stip."

So sick of hearing about needing to work for you family when you are being paid that much money. Around the world MOST wont see the amount of money some of these guys make in one match in half their lives.
@stevepmg9202
@stevepmg9202 2 года назад
Only at the top of the card, and the money they are paid has to cover their own travel and hotels on the road, gym workouts whenever/wherever they can find them, and eating on the go isnt cheap compared to cooking at home. Its one of the biggest myths about the industry that it affords you a lavish lifestyle ; unless you're at the very top or are very sensible with your money, it doesn't. Hence why so many keep working into their 50s/60s rather than retire before they get really banged up.
