First part of a series where I offer advice and recommendations for playing Grim Dawn in Hardcore (permadeath) mode.
This episode covers the first few levels on a new character, with most of the footage being me demonstrating (and talking about) tips, tricks and advice for playing the game (and staying alive) in hardcore mode.

I've played ONLY HC, since early access + veteran (since the upadate with the veteran option) and lost every character! And I'm going to loose all my future chars as well. that's the appeal for me; reroll new chars, try different playstyles, die, get butthurt, repeat. I've never reached the "endgame" (-> elite -> ultimate -> lvl100) but that's ok. I play Grim Dawn primarly for the build variety and the theorycrafting

Here is the best advice I can give as someone who played thousands of hours of ARPGs in hardcore. Pay careful attention to items you find. If you get a rare drop with something amazing in it you should think about the builds you could try using that item. If it doesn't fit your current class or spec you can just store it and keep thinking about it when you open your stash. Start planning your next character around items you find and you will cut a lot of the pain from death. It can get to the point where you start playing more aggressive with your current character because you already have an alternative that makes you excited to start leveling again. That means you can enjoy a more aggressive playstyle to see how far you get. You can also start leveling a new character if you want to try something new, and leave your current character alive. Having two characters with a higher level means you have a backup if you are not in the mood to start from scratch after a recent death.

Great vid as always, pleasure to watch these. I've never seen you use (arguably) the best skill in the game and by that I mean AAR. Is there a possibility that you will make a playthrough series involving this skill? Would be great, not gonna lie As for HC I've started a Purifier Caster playthrough with Stun Jacks and Stormbox as my main abilities... only to end up as a Fire Caster Purifier with BWC/Canister Bomb/Grenado and a bunch of MI's that turn these skills into full fire damage. I guess that's what Grim Dawn does to us - making us change our mind very split second (or based on an interesting MI we just found for the first time ever) 😂😂

Krieg tip: make 2x purifyed salt, and fight him with 86% aether res while face tanking him. Easy

Strangely, I never think about aether resistance for Krieg. I just go in and either kill him or die myself.

I think the attraction of doing hardcore in this, rather than POE, would be not having to worry about server stability

Yeah, if you want to experience weird glitches, crazy difficulty spikes and hilarious random crashes you need to try Grim Dawn multiplayer - it’s amazing 👊😂

I love POE a lot, but I'd definitely never play it hardcore. Server issues+boring early game+visual clutter= nope. I can't stand the POE campaign being forced on me for the 20th time. Grim Dawn's early game is as good as its endgame.

24:00 If you want to make sure you will not make this mistake, get a bunch of the same item (Something useless) and fill most of the personal stash with it. That way you will never make the mistake

First of all for those of you who "Flex" Aka show off for 10% extra xp, i think its funny. Its look at me i am in "Veteran Difficult" Yeah i can get through the game faster and make up for the 10% loss in xp in normal. now i play on normal mode and enjoy the game, learn the game, just have fun! if you want a challenge then make a Hardcore character, and follow this Awesome guide!!! Now he recommends doing a Retaliation Commando as your first Hardcore character, and i agree. If you want to see a good build then Look at his Retaliation Commando build guide its awesome i am doing a series using his Retaliation Commando in Hardcore on my channel. My friend another Awesome guide thank you.

Tonight was my Grim Dawn night (Tuesday's and Thursday's are Grim Dawn nights) so here is the VoD. www.twitch.tv/videos/1911191672 I was Playing my Soft core version of @Arcadelife1 Retaliation Commando and at 04:17:49 i did the Bosses in the court of the Magi, and then at 04:33:40 i kill Grand Magus Morgoneth. It was my first time i have killed him so get a good laugh at my astonishment that i beat him.

Going into the season content the first time in hardcore is double-scary because not only is it unfamiliar but you absolutely know they’ve created the most evil content imaginable 👊😂

Here im doing first playthru in HC Veteran lvl60 going strong ;) To be onest the first 30lvl were the hardest but now when my resist are all sorted out its kinda to easy. But also im doing 100% map discovery + lore etc, so im probably overleveled. Soldier forstwave sems very strong for HC. Thanks for the tips

Beware the difficulty spike if you're going from Normal into Elite. Veteran to Elite is much smoother, but harder to start.

I love this mate. Some great tips and tricks, but also, your tone throughout is fantastic. It is the "I don't care if you disagree" tone, but also "I have an opinion so listen please". It is great. I love it when you told the NPC to shut up btw! Going to enjoy this series!

I always thought hardcore was a dumb idea. Then my friend put something in perspective. He said “don’t you just make new characters all the time and never level them past like level 40?” Now I have 4 HC characters level 60 plus, and I can’t imagine playing the game on soft core. It really makes the game more engaging, and I love collecting gear for my next build when I ultimately die.

Playing HC only as I have been since d2. Atm lvl 40 act 3..nohthing Beats experiencing a Game the First time in hard ore, especially the bossfights

Ashes of Malmouth dlc will get you The Desolator, crafted from a faction blueprint. Arguably ‘the best’ 2H ranged weapon for a Purifier build (Demolitionist + Inquisitor - the 2nd mastery is part of the Ashes dlc too).

I recently did a 2H Ranged Tactician on hardcore. I had a great time, great gear, progressing well. Then i slipped for one second... Everything gone... I like the fact that this is the challenge, but i also hate it.

@@Arcadelife1 I got to Fort Ikon. Killed the lieutenant boss (traitor) easily. The cult boss before that, no issues. Then i went back to Blood Grove and met the cult guy with Pistols, which i had killed before. However i just ran into him and he more or less one-shotted me. Oh well, better luck next time.

Another tip: If you play hardcore, especially as a new player, you should either: Go for normal and don't play like a pussy. Don't overlevel too much. You should play safe, but don't make the game boring for yourself, especially considering how much time you would waste grinding to overlevel. OR Go for Veteran on your first try. It will be faster to grind and overlevel and it's hard to trivialize content, so you will always have a degree of risk. The best part about this approach if the fact you can explore more of the game without feeling like you are wasting time. You can always go back to normal if you feel like it's too much for you, and you can start saving items in the shared stash in case you die. Discovery can be one of the best elements of an ARPG if you resist the impulse to google everything.

I'm beginning to think overleveling your character is a bad idea. I've done it plenty of times, then suddenly something just kills me out of the blue. One second I think I'm at full health and the next I'm dead. I'm one of those players that wants to keep everything so I can play with it later. I'm also one to habitually uncover the entire map and loot every secret I can find in the game. I'm starting to think that this is my downfall in that I have over 11K hours in Grim Dawn and have never reached level 100. I've played in every difficulty and that includes hardcore. But in hardcore, I've never made it to even level 45. I always die to something. So, I haven't played it in a long time. It was nearly always because I forgot to max out my resistances. But even when I do that, something kills me because I thought it did one kind of damage but it actually does a different kind of damage thus killing me. So I've resolved to try doing a speed run and ignore all the secrets if I can to see if my standard playstyle is the reason for me dying every time I try to play a strong character.

@@jchinckley I had the same death issues for a while in this game, probably a couple of years. Then I stopped trying to play ‘my way’ (it clearly wasn’t working) and used a retaliation build guide to batter my way to 100. Then I used that character to farm a load of good endgame gear so I had something to aim for on future characters. That was in hardcore.

One point you made that was probably sub-conscious now very conscious is that you are more likely to get killed by critical hits due to lower DA than lower resistances. As much of a veteran as I am in HC, I should focus more on that one fact. Also, when Duncan says, "Hey, don't get killed out there!" that actually means something in HC. As someone who recently did a level-up during the ultimate Krieg fight, I totally empathise - I’m just not going to tell new hardcore players it’s perfectly fine to do this stuff 👊😂

To be fair... I think a Forcewave Soldier into Deathknight is indisputably the best first hardcore character. Krieg's set being easily target farmable on top of Soldier just being a solid all-round mastery makes it a bit of a no-brainer. I really struggle to pick a second place though, as there are dozens of very strong builds that would honestly be in position 1 if not for the Krieg set.

I would have agreed before totems became a thing. With totems, it's easier to get legendaries and MIs that make your build really strong and online before you can even farm Krieg. Personal recomendation for a first character is a lightning Rune of Kalastor Paladin. Much stronger than a Krieg DK and much tankier/faster to level. Most of the gear is based on greens with a few purples to go with it, and you have pally zoom
