Finland was a part of Sweden until 1809. It had the same rights as any other part of Sweden. Those rights it got from Russia were pretty soon starting to erode and at the end of the 19th century with the Russification of the country being a constant threat and the cosncription of finnishmales into the Russian army, wich was promised by the tsar that it would never happen a resistannce movement started forming. I actually got recommended this movie on Amazon when I was ordering another great Russian military women called Battle for Sebastopol, about the Russian woman becoming one of the greatest snipers in history with 309 confirmed kills during ww2. Her initials are LP since I don't want to dishonor her name. Liudmila Pavlichenko was her name I believe. If you like this movie then you'll love Battle for Sebastopol.

That was the military - the Russian military of WW I. They sorted out the sick and weak (as well as they could) and kept the strong and healthy - most often of the peasant and worker classes. They did the exact same thing in WW II but drew from a much wider pool of people, recruiting deep into Asia. People are people and toughness comes from the inside. You learn to deal with your horrible situation and conditions the best you can. Any pretentious attitude is lost in a worthwhile military because it becomes obvious that it doesn't fly there. Only what you can do counts - the rest is bullshit. You should be comparing those Russian women to the American women of those days - NOT modern ones. I daresay that you'll find them to be equally tough and determined, and probably a lot handier with a rifle/gun than the Russian women were. Life was pretty tough across the US back in those days.
