I've been hoping for quite a while that someone who really knows how to pick locks would do a video on the Grim Workshop's picks. Thank you for covering this!

Why do you not review the Lishi lock picks? Can they be used with euro locks or are they specifically for american locks...
@sigmaman5562
@sigmaman5562 2 года назад
@@yiddo3176 The Lishi picks are made for certain keyways. The vast majority of them are for car locks. The few cylinder keyways of which I have heard are KW-1 (5-pin Kwikset) and SC-1 (5-pin Schlage C), those being the most used. SC-4 (6-pin C), and SC-20 (6-pin Schlage C, CE, and E through L) and M-1 (Master’s original keyway) also exist. Other companies-so far, at least (2022 March)-have yet to arrive. Yale, Corbin and/or Russwin, Lockwood, et cetera, might be coming, but do not hold your breath waiting for them!

That first set must be what Master Lock uses for their security scale! 🤣

This is more of just a trivial detail that has nothing to do with the tools themselves. But the black rubber things are called silencers and they’re meant to keep the tags from clacking together and making noise. Great review though!

Yeah, you could easilly sandwich the two useful ones in-between two actual dogtags within that surround and it would be fairly un noticeable. I would use them more as a talking point personally. I would probably integrate a decoding tool in that setup too.
@LockNoob

Agreed

Ash - I believe that typically the shorter chain is used along with the longer length so that the tag sits flat against the chest - if the tags are just threaded through the longer chain, you’ll notice that it tends to sit off at a slight angle and if you are then taking body plates or a ruck on and off, they can dig into the sternum. 😉
@penfold7800
@penfold7800 3 года назад
I didn't know that. I wonder if the chains with these are stainless steel? I've had a few cheap ones that weren't that corroded very quickly.
@pville5548
@pville5548 3 года назад
If I am not mistaken, at least during the Vietnam war, the G.I. was issued 2 dog tags and they came with the long and short chain. The short chain was attached through the long chain so that the 2 dog tags hung at different lengths. 2 dog tags were issued so that if you were killed on the battlefield, your comrades could take one of the tags and turn in to command while the 2nd remained with the body. I have both of my dog tags and the two chains.
@penfold7800
@penfold7800 3 года назад
It's good to know you made it back. I wonder if some soldiers wore them with paracord instead of the chain, so at a pinch, you had a handy string saw.
@constitutionalpatriot6797
@constitutionalpatriot6797 3 года назад
FWIW, the surround is to keep them from jingling or rattling together, which could give away your position.

I could sorta relate with the pick being too thick for the master 3. I was getting frustrated with everybody saying the masterlock 3 has a wide keyway while I can't even pick it open once. Turns out my chinese pick is just too thick at 0.032". Took my pick to the grinder and got the lock open.

I think, in a pinch, these could work, or be "adjusted" to work for some basic locks. Pretty neat all around 👌

That's a good idea i don't carry picks every day but I would wear that every day I think the wave rakes would be handy

I feel like the first "rake" you were inspecting was supposed to be a bump key. But that's just a guess since I have no idea what the "hook" would be lol.

I would recommend modifying the first one to make a short hook and angling the front of the rake and shortening the peaks and possibly thinning them to make them useful
@SilktheAbsent1
@SilktheAbsent1 3 года назад
I wonder... That "rake" from the first one *almost* looks like it might work as a comb pick in a Master 140. If you still have it, maybe give it a try?
@jmr
@jmr 3 года назад
They should stop selling the first one. The second one is nice but some very minor improvements might be possible to make it work with other types of handcuffs beyond standard Smith and Wesson style. A little notch to make it past warding. That final one is pretty good as well. I might get one to play with. Biggest problem with the handcuff key for a real world situation. Dog tags go in front and handcuffs go in back. Put that thing on the back of a belt! (Check local laws - I believe handcuff keys might be illegal in more states then lock picks in the US)
@TRIIGGAVELLI

These looked like they were designed by people who were explained exactly how lockpicking works and what the picks look like. But never actually saw lockpicks themselves
@xxjusxstarxx
@xxjusxstarxx 3 года назад
Idea is cool but they look a lil too bulky to fit in a lot of the keyways and have too small a handle , for an actual good sized kit I recommend are the credit card sized stamped ones. They are like the survival cards that go in your wallet but there's a few different brand lock picks and I recommend them more honestly cause you always take your wallet with you, and a survival tool or emergency tool is only useful if you remember to bring it

the first card that didn't work with the master .... maybe it could work with a small dimple lock ??
@RAkers-tu1ey
@RAkers-tu1ey 3 года назад
Question: I see you used a vice to pick the locks, I presume this was for the benefit of the camera. Did you try to pick the locks in your hand, to simulate a more "field" condition? How did that go? I see another collaborating in your future.

so the first dog tag tools don't work so well, but it seems that the manufacturer made it so you can reuse them hence the sticky backing to put them back.. so could you modify the lock picks to work properly???

No.2 is super useful and they got it right from the actual SERE kits. :) No.3 is acceptable as well , very basic , but at the same time , in real escape situations , you're not going to have all the time for actual lock picking. :) No.1 is absolute trash , and can't really imagine scenario where it can be useful. But what all 3 got right in every aspect is ease of concealement and taking very little space while being maximum efficient. Except for the saw like rake in No.1. Two other tools from set No.1 *maybe* can be useful for dimple locks , but that is questionable.

Novelty? Maybe. Useful in an emergency? Definitely... except the first lockpick set. If it can't even open a Masterlock, it's useless.

Could you try the first rake as a bump key?
@penfold7800
@penfold7800 3 года назад
Nope, it doesn't have enough angle in the cuts, so it would get stuck behind the pins. You could use it to purposefully jam a lock though.

The only thing about metal picks is they are easily detected as metal detectors are everywhere now. Someone needs to find a material that their metal detectors will never discover.
@penfold7800
@penfold7800 3 года назад
Depends what you want, and how innovative you are willing to be. Theoretically, I could use the arms from my spectacles for a pick and tension tool, and a slither from a pot noodle container as a handcuff shim. You can get handcuff keys that disguise as shoelace ends that won't get detected (because they're too small). The problem with non metallic materials is that they are either too soft or too brittle.

What is a quality pick set that is not going to cost a whole lot I seen sparrows I've seen Southord I'm just hoping you know of something of similar quality but for less money
@penfold7800
@penfold7800 3 года назад
A small sparrows set will last much longer and be more useful than 10 Chinese sets for the same money. You can also buy single picks from most of the main suppliers, so it is fairly inexpensive to get the set you need. For example, a short, medium and reach hook and a half diamond, all in two thicknesses (18thou and 23thou) together with three double ended tension wrenches in the three thicknesses (11 tools all together) will be the best initial investment towards your hobby you're likely to make.

These look like badly-designed novelty gadgets, like those silly sliding top plastic "James Bond" credit card pick sets that can't fit in any wallet ever made and are clearly hollow. The picks in them are incredibly bad. These look like someone thought they knew how to make lockpicks, but didn't actually know how. I think the supposed rake in the first one might be an attempt at a comb pick, but the shape is just a bit off. Could the deep hook maybe be an attempt at a handcuff key?
