oh cool. yeah I love Trov's stuff and seen this video loads. I was actually going to ask you if you have tried the brown basecoat before?

Absolutely love the texture and the gradients this technique adds, but I'm not sure if the miniature/armor won't appear too "chalky" in the end, if you get what I mean.
@PaintbyMinis
@PaintbyMinis 2 года назад
I would definitely say the oil wash does lend a certain chalky finish, but without the wash it looks great, I have some pictures on my Instagram If you want to have a better look!

@@PaintbyMinisYeah, you're right. Just checked out your insta -> follow. It does look more battle-worn and the texture is more natural without the wash. Didn't expect that to be honest. Thank you so much for sharing! This is such a superb technique for painting black!

@@PaintbyMinis do you think maybe some black contrast paint or a black wash could work instead of the oil wash?
@PaintbyMinis

@@D00M3R_MAVS I think it would work great, wont look exactly like the oil wash but will get the job done

Very nice Method, I think i'll use this for black armor of chaplains. The Dark Rubber color is hard to get in my area, do you have an idea for a substitut?

Hi! Great tutorial, very helpful and easy to follow. I'm starting a black templars army and cant decide if i want to go with grimdark more realistic paintjob like this one or GW edge highlight approach with some scratches. Do you think this method would look good on vehicles with larger surface areas?
@PaintbyMinis
@PaintbyMinis 2 года назад
Hey, not had much experience with larger models! May be worth doing a test to see, imagine it would still look good on a large surface

did you try on any vehicles? I also need something that will transfer over, and landraiders are going to be back for tenth.

Could you just use water mixed with the oil wash for the weathering oil step instead of using a white spirit? Also love your videos. Much more accessible than a lot of other videos with like 50 paints per model.
@PaintbyMinis
@PaintbyMinis Год назад
Oils unfortunately aren't water soluble so cant mix, so thats why we have to use white spirit

Looks really good. I'm definitely trying that out. Do you think you could use a dome headed drybrush instead of the sponge?

You may get a more predictable pattern but should work fine 🙂

Would you say you have to use an oil wash? Or is nuln oil from GW a good option as well? Haven’t really used oil washes before. If the effect won’t come out the same I can use a black oil wash instead

I am just trying that scheme and really like it. Such a relaxed approach as well. What kind of matte varnish did you use?
@PaintbyMinis

I use winsor and newton galeria matt varnish through an airbrush, if you don't have an airbrush then testors dullcote is great!

Looks really good, man. I'm doing BT's at the minute, and looking at all the examples I can find to help me decide how I want to paint them. I definitely would like to do some battle damage, just not sure how I want to do it yet. How did you make your oil wash as well, please? I have some black and burnt umber oil paints, but I haven't done anything with them yet. I still need to pick up some proper artists white spirit, and keep forgetting. is that how you make yours, or you use something else?

Yeah that was due to the oil wash I used, which I've later stopped doing, as I mentioned in the video if you want a more vibrant black/blue armour then skip the oil wash 😀

I feel like starting with a rusty brown base coat then stippling black before building u the highlights would give a more interesting result.

I tried this and it looked like a half asleep 5 year old went at it. I know it's not the method that sucks because it looks good in the video so yknow that leaves one possibly. This was supposed to be a easy baby mode method and I somehow messed it up lmao. Makes me want to put my brushes up and never touch them again.
